      She can because she's Rita Hayworth, there has simply never been another. One of the most beautiful women in the world and a beautiful dancer, was Rita. Tragically she died of Alzheimers before it was recognised and she had a bad time from people who didn't understand what it was. They all just thought she was a supreme bitch and she was terribly ill.

    • @esmeephillips5888
      @esmeephillips5888 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@petertaylor3600 They thought she was drunk. Awful, sad story.
      Many Hollywood ladies who flamed out before their time were at least partly responsible for their misfortunes. Rita's worst faults were being too timid to stand up for herself, too anxious for emotional security and too trusting with men who offered it. These are not traits that hurt others, and Rita Hayworth was a decent woman whose face and form tragically became her misfortune. At least her daughter helped her instead of defaming her posthumously like the viperish spawn of Bette Davis and Joan Crawford.

    I have to say, those eyes of hers are awfully disarming. As twice over a mother of newborns, I'd wager just that look alone was like a lullaby to get em off to sleep. The same would surely be true in her delivery of a goodnight story as well ... 'And they all lived happily ever after .'
    Let's all hope and pray she's in a better place now, for the mere fact she used my name in the latter seconds is testament she made our individual lives sparkle in ways she could not imagine. That she did!

    Shot by Ted Tetzlaff, one of the men who brought b&w cinematography to its gleaming, glossy zenith in the Forties. His last work, for Hitchcock in 'Notorious', did for Ingrid Bergman what he did here for Rita. AFAIK he never filmed color.

    Astaire was one lucky old fool. He was always being paired up with very young and beautiful women.

    • @chattyroz2934
      @chattyroz2934 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      He wasn't always old. And later on only the younger ones could not only keep up and look right with him. Dancing is a visual art. He stayed at his peak as a dancer for an extraordinary length of time. Mostly, they are past their best by their mid to late thirties.

    • @heru-deshet359
      @heru-deshet359 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@chattyroz2934 Ha ha. Of course" He wasn't always old". You are right that it would take a younger woman to keep up with him, but I noticed that many other actors who DID NOT dance were also paired up with leading ladies up to 30 years their junior.

    Of course this musical version with Fred Astaire Rita Hayworth and Adolf Menjou with Jerome Kern musical is marveleus

    Strange the differences between fantasy and fact. Rita's "real" name was Margarita Carmen Cansino, Fred's Fred Austerlitz. At the time this film was made, 1942, she was 24 years old, he 43. It was the middle of WWII. She later died of complications of Alzheimer's disease; they both died in the same year, 1987.

  • @kingusmcgee

    Yes, Rita was talented and beautiful. But think the great talent here was Fred Astaire and composer Jerome Kern who wrote the musical score. Fred Astaire made all his dancing/singing partners look good: Joan Leslie, Ginger Rogers, Cyd Charrise and a few others I can't remember.
    But class and elegance it was, the golden age of Hollywood.

    Johnny Mercer's lyrics may play on a gossip columnist's cliche. In the 1930s Louella Parsons often reported social occasions where her boss Wilklam Randolph Hearst's companion Marion Davies was present. Her invariable sign-off was 'And Marion never looked lovelier!'

    Oh my! Fred Astaire, the Great God of American dance, struck down by Rita Hayworth.
    I should have paid at least a dollar seventy-five to watch this.
    But then, it's the music of Jerome Kern. Can't go wrong with that. Not in my "palmiest days."
    I'm not saying the musical is a knockout, but she sure is.
    The lyrics are from Johnny Mercer. From 1942.
    I am so afraid!

    Adolphe Menjou was a silent actor and was OK, I suppose, but his acting in a sound movie was abysmal. He was probably there because of his name...

    • @petertaylor3600
      @petertaylor3600 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually, I read ages ago a thing about various silent movie actors, and their doings. Menjou as considered far rightwing politically and, in fact, wasn't the nicest pebble on the beach, as it were. He was one of the group who, in the 50s, did so much to destroy Hollywood during the McCarthy era trials in the early 50s. He didn't intend to destroy his own means of a living, but he was rabidly anti Communist and obviously pretty dumb. He had had, during his career, many high ranking friends in the industry who helped his career but a fine actor, he was not.
