Lol, looks like we have always done gangster movies, but there is always a difference when we present our own narrative. None of the guys playing servants were required to play dumb.
Well made in all areas. Production values, cast - just a few smarms that might be my view of movies made after 1937, script, plot (predicable), clothing from the period, and a drama - not a copy of Boston Blackie nor a James Cagney emoting. A professionalism that has stood the test of decades.
This is a awesome movie. Another great one is Geen Pastures, I think 1937 .I believe it is a all black cast as well. I'm red and white ... both But I have always loved the older black cast movies or heavy black cast movies.. like let's do it again and uptown Saturday night and others. The story movie Heat of the night.. Ralph Coopers son Ralph Cooper Ii took over the Appolo theater amateur talt night from his daddy He got into music.. he is promoting Amanda Holly now a bi racial girl. Just FYI
Fascinating! Movie making has changed dramatically over the past 80 plus years as has the style of acting. Here the actors have a very dramatic stage like performance. Movie story telling is also much more sophisticated with more subtlety and changes in pace. A movie making shorthand has developed that filmakers use and audiences understand that is missing in these early films. It's wonderful to see black people properly represented on screen rather the cruel stereotypes seen in the mainstream big budget Hollywood movies of the period.
Wow....fascinating Hollywood history. These artists and production crew pioneered this American art and industry....never forget....

Wow 1937!
What a good film and an amazing piece of history. Great intro by Ossie Davis. I feel there's a movie to be made about the making of this movie.
This movie reminds me of "Harlem Nights"😊❤

Can’t make it right now. I’m watching the glass onion… Premier today
But I’ll be back
... did somebody say something..
*All Black Cast!* Yet they still had the *darker one's* bucking their eyes and acting *childlike!* 🤷🏽
Already know🙄
If a white man produced this film,
Wouldn't that make this a plantation?
Did I understand that multiple investors were involved in this film including the star Ralph Cooper and another black investor ?
