Before 1990: Prehistory. I can't name a single meme older than this 1990-2000: Protohistory. Some memes from this period are still remembered, like Godwin's Law and Goatse, but the originals have been mostly lost, as they were born in dead forums and Usenet groups. 2000-2005: Antiquity. The first viral videos began to appear, on sites like Newgrounds and YTMND. MySpace, Facebook, Something Awful and 4chan were founded. 2005-2008: Classical Antiquity. The concept of the internet meme is created, and the first famous 4chan memes begin to appear, being mentioned even in the mainstream media. TH-cam was founded. The seeds of modern shitpost culture are sown by 4chan and TH-cam Poop. 2008-2010: Late Antiquity: 4chan gains notoriety, and normies learn what an internet meme is. Facebook overshadows MySpace. 2010-2013: Dark Ages: Your grandma signed up to Facebook. Memes so unfunny we are still making fun of them today. Corporations started using them to relate to the kids. The internet was generally more concentrated into a small number of websites, with previously influential places, like Newgrounds, Digg, Something Awful and LiveJournal falling into obscurity. The first parody memes, which ridiculed Rage Comics and Advice Animals, were created, setting a precedent for modern ironic memes. Vine and Twitch went online. 2013-2015: Upper Middle Ages. Rage comics go out of fashion, and we began to see some signs of improvement, with early ironic memes such as MLG montages and Gangweed. The last funny 4chan memes appeared, but Gamergate ruined it forever. 2015-2017: Renaissance. An explosion of unique memes for normies and the extremely online alike. The modern ironic style is created, and remains relatively unchanged today. Vine peaked and died too soon. Discord went online. 2017-2019: Counter-Reformation. The memes of the Dark Ages come back, under several layers of irony. Lazy template memes comparable to advice animals became widespread. Tumblr banned female-presenting nipples and went practically extinct, with its userbase absorbed by Twitter. Musical.ly merged with TikTok, which became a sort of continuation of Vine. 2019: The Shitpost Age. Memes are so short-lived that the concept starts losing any meaning 2020: The End of History

2004-2008: The "Underground" Era - Memes are created and distributed via niche websites to mostly heavy internet users. 2009-2011: Early Mainstream Era - The prevalence and ease of access of TH-cam and Facebook allow most casual users to enter into the meme culture. 2012-2015: Spotlight or "Mass Market" Era - By this time, most of the "classic" memes are firmly ingrained into internet culture, with the mainstream catching on soon after, leading to a meteoric rise and fall in the meme's popularity. 2016-2017: "The Split" - Eventually the bubble gets so large, it ends up bursting, causing those in the subculture to find increasingly obscure and surreal material away from the quickly dying glut of mainline memes. 2017-????: "The New Underground" - the new wave of surreal, more daring and more "in-joke" focused humor is similar to the original underground era, however the internet is a much larger place, with many more people who grew up in the subculture, leading to a new "meme renaissance".

Its crazy how much of a turning point 2016 was for the entire landscape of the internet. There was defintely irony and post-irony before that, in 2014 and 2015, but it was 2016 that everything really changed. It was the beginning of an entirely new era. I know the meme is that it was all because harambe died, but i wonder what actually triggered such a dramatic shift.
2000 was the first huge game changer, since that's when broadband came out. 2008 was the next big one since that's when the iphone and social media took off, 2016 was the adpocalypse and mass censorship happened. It feels like every 8 years there is a change. How will 2024 end?
For me it's 2018. Because it was the year where memes began lasting for a couple of months then slowly die off. Nowadays memes lasts for at most two weeks.

1990-2000: Protohistory.
Memes are so short-lived that the concept starts losing any meaning
2020: The End of History
Where would you put Demotivational Pics?
@@lyssatiny102 definitely in protohistory! They were created in 1998 by a company, Despair Inc, that sells parodies of the motivational posters you'd see in offices, and are probably the only meme from the 90s that is still being used today.

When was MLP a meme? It's a suprisingly good show
Blame 4chan. Of course, they probably did good to the planet with this run.
It has been having some interresting characters that makes hularious faces
It never got full popular support in any year but notice how it gravitated on pretty much every list from 2011-2015. Surprisingly it lasted several years which is more than you can say for any meme bar something that got extremely popular like Doge.
4 Chan is also the reason way the late 2000s and early 2010s data is a little lower than it should be other than having almost no internet.
Just because a show is good doesn't mean it can't be a meme, the most likely reason MLP was a meme was because of the "bronies" (I think that's how you spell it)
