This is why we all miss Michael so much. It's a pleasure to hear Pat play as well. You almost never get to hear him comp for someone else so it's a real treat.
That's the Outside Man - always swinging, always fresh, always modern, always challenging, always surfing the changes, always navigating through incredible rhythmic and harmonic progressions. Michael Brecker always moves me to tears of hapiness and sorrow. I am deeply sorry that he has passed away, but always thankful to be able to still listen to him!
Michael, we hardly knew ye. I am old enough to remember the band Dreams that burst upon the scene in 1970. Randy & Michael, Billy Cobham, the guitarist Abercrombie - a heluva band, a heluva debut record. A friend of mine gave me Michael's solo album about 10 years ago and told me I could stop playing now - MB just played every note in existence and there was nothing left for anyone else to play. That was damn near true. What a giant. C Brooke
michael brecker you were soooo damn good...i can't believe what i just saw...it is my goal to be able to imprivise like you... ....im a guitar player but youre one of my liftime heroes, pat too. but what i just saw what you di with your horn.....HOLY FUCK, I LOVE YOU! RIP
Pat and the band sound amazing as usual!!!!! When I went to William Paterson Michael Brecker was a guest soloist with the big band that semester, I got a featured solo before Michael on a beautiful gospel/jazz tune by Bob Mintzer Called " Lazy Day "!!! Michael was a wonderful guy!!!!
Pat Metheny style is just unbelievable. It's IMPOSSIBLE not to recognise him. Look at the drummer face, please!! He has played with Metheny some other times and his is always like that!
@perovaas Totally agree with you, and it's amazing that I'd just wrote the same words on Facebook, when I discovered that Pat Metheny wrote "Every Day I Thank You" for Michael Brecker. Right on!
Tremendously powerful groove from bass and drums, making Pat and Mike play their asses off! Also, beautiful drum solo (one of the few I actually like!)
Wow, Michael Brecker's solo blows my mind. His ideas are brilliant, much like Coltranes and his technique is amazingly controlled. This video leaves me with awe. Every solo in this video is awesome!!!!!!!!
man Brecker gets better and better as he plays in this solo. I thought he just couldn't get in it at the first minute but after that he just blows. He had real talent.
im pretty sure he meant that its incredible that all this creativity is spawning from rhythm changes, the same form that has been used 10000 other times. yet they still make it sound new. drop the sarcastic tone.
They are very talented--that's why they're famous. Like I said, no criticism of their abilities. It's just my opinion based on my taste in music. You know, listeners and players can and do criticize music even if they are not able to play it. Don't get me wrong, good talent here, just no memorable melody lines.
yeah unibomber, I totally agree. All music is just made of the same 12 notes anyways, so really its all the same!! I'm so glad I read your comment, i'm going to go throw away my mp3 player now. Thanks for the enlightenment.
Coltraneish? His solo is very similar to a Parker solo; there isn't any theme in it, anything! Just wonderful notes at the speed of light... Dreaming..

The jazz world truly lost a legend in Michael. Wow, he and Metheny were remarkable together.
