    How To Test Freezer Compressor
    Replace Start Relay For Haier, Hotpoint and GE appliances
    If the start relay is bad, the compressor will not start and you will hear a clicking noise. The clicking noise is the overload cutting the compressor off when it overheats from trying to start with a bad start relay. Be sure to unplug the freezer before working on it. The start relay is accessed through an access panel on the side of the freezer. The start relay is plugged into the side of the compressor. There will probably be a black cover over the relay that needs to be removed to replace the relay. The start relay is inexpensive and is an easy repair. My freezer is a Hotpoint model #HHM5SM AWW, but they are generally the same or very similar and operate in the same manner. Here is the link where I bought the relay:
    www.ebay.com/i...
    UPDATE 2023/10/4!! - The above EBay site no longer exists. I have found what looks to be the same relay at the below link. Please let me know if this works:

    Thanks for this video. Our deep freeze died and we didn’t know until it was too late and all of our food in there was spoiled. I did a search on TH-cam and seen your video on replacing the relay. I ordered the exact part from Amazon and had it in 4 days. Followed your instructions on how to replace the relay and plugged it in the deep freezer and it started up. Thanks again.

      @jamestucker5326 Thanks for commenting. I appreciate it. I am glad that my video helped. It is a shame that these appliances are so poorly manufactured. I would suggest buying another relay, just in case. Also, I purchased a thermometer that has a readout device outside the freezer. I have it hanging on the wall next to the freezer. I check it regularly. Glad I could help!

    With watching these kinds of videos, it occurs to me, that those of us who are handy and can do these repairs, it might be a very good idea to grab the make and model numbers of our fridges, freezers, de-humidifiers and anything with a compressor, and buy the relay and overload (where used) and just keep them handy.
    Also a good idea, as I'm seeing, is if a fridge or freezer doesn't have a failure alarm, for those of us who are Arduino/ESP32 addicts, to make devices to monitor and report problems so that a failure is discovered as it happens.

    Where can I buy the relay

    • @twinbrookacres
      @twinbrookacres  ปีที่แล้ว

      Look in the description of my video. I provided a link to the EBay site where I bought mine. But that was 3 years ago. I don't know if they still have any. Good luck.

    Im having a hard time find the exact replacement for my igloo freezer

      I don't know where you would get the replacement. I am not familiar with igloo freezers. Try ebay, if you haven't already. Or call igloo directly. Sorry I can't be of more assistance. Good luck.

    Also how do I know which point is for which wire as I’m scared

    • @twinbrookacres
      @twinbrookacres  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Take a picture before you remove the old relay. And use the picture to set the wires on the new relay.

    Is there a way to test the starter relay with a multimeter?

    • @twinbrookacres
      @twinbrookacres  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There should be, with a proper meter. But mine is old and broken. So I gambled that is was the relay. You should hear the slight clicking as it tries to engage, then click again to shut off. If you hear that, it is probably the relay.

    Where is the capacitor? Does it have one or just the PTC start relay?

    • @twinbrookacres
      @twinbrookacres  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't recall seeing a capacitor. I think it is just the relay.

    I can’t pull the wire off the relay to be replaced. It won’t budge. Any ideas?

    • @twinbrookacres
      @twinbrookacres  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      One of mine (the white wire?) was difficult to take off. Try prying very gently with a small screwdriver or small pliers. Just be very careful!

      @@twinbrookacres thanks. It eventually came off after lots of plier pulling. Hopefully it didn’t get too damaged. Fridge working
