    Surreal, it has been two decades since I studied this, and life has nothing to do with this (i mean it obviously has at everything is physics), i still follow these lectures ... i feel these lectures keep my mind sharp and improve my cognitive ability and to think beyond .. believe me this has helped me in my career though i have no use of physics in my professional life.
    And to be honest..what a gem of an academician prof Lewis is ... have been following his content since years .... some people are problem solvers, some 'know' the concepts quite clear .. but Prof Lewin "feels" the physics ..and its heat and soul ... true sign of greatness
    Dear Prof Lewin ..your name shall live as long as life exists on this Earth .. there was never a better Physics teacher ... respect from India

    Professor Lewin - I had been having a very hard time in my first physics course until I came across your lectures. I don't know how you do it, but you make things MAKE SENSE in a way that I have never seen before! The difference in how I approach problem solving and, consequently, perform on tests is night and day. I went from dreading physics to dare I say....enjoying it? Being excited about it?! Getting A's in it?! Thank you for inspiring this "lightbulb moment" in myself and in many others!!

    They "taught" us all this stuff in high school. Physics is my favorite subject (even though I'm in med school now). Teaching in the sense, making us mug up the formulae and do the math. But I personally took my time to go through my physics textbooks to develop a full understanding of the world and it really paid off. I wish they taught physics in a more sensible way. Thank you for these lectures so much, makes me remember the pages and illustrations in my physics notes from high school, while I still keep leaning new stuff from these! :D

Given that there are literally thousands of physics lectures widely available on all kinds of platforms online, I think it really speaks to Professor Lewin that this series truly remains one of-if not THE-best out there. It's like he installs the intuition into your brain all without you even realizing it's happening. Never a dull moment, no dumbing down, brilliant clarity and coherence. To the question « why do we have V0² in the formula giving the highest point P » : same argument as for OS : the time of flight is proportional to the Y component of V0 [which is V0 sin(a)].
    When V0 doubles, it’s Y and it’s X component both double. So the time of flight doubles.
    The speed along the Y axis Vy(t) diminishes in a linear way, proportional to the time elapsed since Vy(t) = -gt + V0. sin(a)
    As this reduction in Vy(t) is linear, if V0y doubles, then during each second of flight, the distance traveled along the Y axis also doubles.
    And so the height of P is multiplied by 4.
    Thanks for this very cool lecture !
    Greetings from France

    • @lecturesbywalterlewin.they9259
      @lecturesbywalterlewin.they9259  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      highest point 0 = -gt + V_oy
      Y= y_o + Vo_y*t - 0.5g*t^2
      calculate t from eq 1 and substitute it in eq 2. you then know what the highest point (y_max) is.

      Sure, I understand the math demonstration. I was trying, as you requested at 12:24, to "instinctively" understand why it makes sense to see Vo² in the formula giving the highest point P. It is clear to me why Vo² appears in the calculation of the total distance traveled along x :
      1) Given that :
      - the time needed to reach the apex equals the time to fall from the apex to the ground
      - the time to reach the apex is Voy / g and that Voy doubles when Vo doubles
      then doubling Vo means doubling the time of flight.
      2) Given that Vox doubles when Vo doubles, and that Vx is constant, during each second of flight the projectile will travel a double distance
      so when V0 is multiplied by 2, time of flight is multiplied by 2 AND speed along x is multiplied by 2, meaning that total distance traveled along x is multiplied by 4.
      I tried to apply the same reasoning for the y axis but this doesn't work because of the continous decrease of Vy....
      So I understand the maths, but I dont get the "feeling" of why it makes sense to see Vo² in the formula giving the highest point P...

      >>>>so when V0 is multiplied by 2, time of flight is multiplied by 2 AND speed along x is multiplied by 2, meaning that total distance traveled along x is multiplied by 4. >>>>
      NO the speed along the x-axis does not double, it is always V_ox; it can not change as there is no acceleration in that direction. If you need more help, please use Google or ask one of your class mates.

    Very best physics lecture I have ever seen you are really very good
    Indian education system is bad there is only learning of theories and no practicals Or experiments

    Hello sir, I am from india and i wanted to study in mit university but my family financial condition is not so good. I am in class 10 and i am preparing for international olympiad exam(ijso) , so that i gain some recognition and scholorships to study further. Sir so please tell me some ways for admission and studing without much fee in mit.
    And after that it will totally depend on my willing power, no matter how much time and effert will it take but i achieve it.

    The first time i saw a question like this i couldn't understand why the time is equal to both cases (with/out gravity) and then i went to a great teacher to ask why. He couldn't answer me because he was tired from helping other's students doubts on math, physics and chemistry and i forgot to ask him later about that problem. It's been about 6 months since that and i accidentally found your lactures and mainly this video, so thank you for your great explanation Walter. (Grettins from Brazil)

    I haven't even smiled in any physics lesson in my entire life. But in Lewin's lecture, I can't even stop laughing throughout the whole class.

    To think that he dropped the monkey and had to put it up again just for the sake of doing a joke and making the lecture more entertaining, it's incredible, I laughed a lot, and you can hardly say that about a physics lecture, truly an amazing professor, love your lectures, greetings from Brazil
