The bikers in this case are operating their bikes illegally: no plates, some without lights, reckless behavior, running redlights, all over the road, failure to comply with a law officer, and multiple other infractions, not to mention behaving like douche-nozzles (which isn't illegal in itself, but still). The officer has a job to do and presenting him/her as some sort of killjoy is intellectually dishonest.

@1:05 I dont understand why some riders like to split lanes quickly at the carpool exits. It's like the one place where you expect cars to move in front of you. Just slow down in these areas especially in heavy traffic.
It's also illegal to come to a stop in the HOV lane to change lanes. The van should have either continued until is was safe to merge over, or decided much earlier to change lanes. Notice the cars behind the rider also had to maneuver out of the danger zone.

However, in heavy traffic this exact situation plays out at nearly every carpool exit. I see it everyday, cars try to exit when the traffic is slow yet the carpool is moving along. They are forced to slow down a lot in order to merge. My point being, when I ride or as advice to someone who rides, don't ride like this guy. Just slow down a little, or dont try to split during carpool exits.
Right, wreck could have been completely avoided. Also could have been avoided if he didn't hold his clutch in because when you do that you don't have engine braking. So if he would have used both breaks not enough to skid and then quickly downshift fast to 1st gear he would have been fine. (Had someone pull out infront of me many of times and I've always used that method and it always worked so far)

I may get some flack for this...but I don't think the lane splitting laws were meant for what Knowmad was doing....I was under the assumption it was started because of air cooled bikes and if traffic was at a stand still or slow you could lane split. Also, I though you weren't supposed to go but 10mph over the slower traffic. Edit: I tried to look up the law and California needs to get it's shit together and clearly define the law...
For sure... Also probably much safer too take it bit by bit instead like 2 - 5 cars. Slowing down briefly too flow of traffic & go again. Just too give yourself room too avoid a crash as much as possible instead of blind trust that no one changes a lane blowing past people at probably 15 - 25 mph over the flow of traffic. At least i would if i had a license + bike, simply because i would not trust any other driver on the road too not change lanes with how many crashes I've seen on compilations like this. There isn't much you can do too stop other drivers from changing lanes. Specially when you aren't visible between cars or are in the middle of filtering between 3 or 5 cars back at that very moment they look in their mirror & start moving over. That will always happen, it's simply a matter of when it happens not if it happens. Should always be that you ride defensive as if you are invisible too ofc as well. It's your own responsibility too operate a vehicle safely after all.
I think it was meant for air cooled bikes originally, but what he is doing is legal in California. There are safety guidelines (not law) like not going 10 or 15 over the flow of traffic up until the speed limit. Basically if you fit between vehicles and you're not on the shoulder, you're legal.

Salty P It was never illegal to lane split in California, and we've always done it. They only codified the law to allow better prosecution of drivers who cut off riders, or purposely hinder their travel. Arguments for the law also pointed out that filtering out motorcycles from heavy and slow traffic, creates more room for cars, and removes the hazard of collision with riders. There are no speed restrictions in the law, but obviously you cannot exceed the posted limit. Ride stupid in between traffic, and the Police will give you a ticket for riding stupid. Ride safely, and they will ignore you

90% braking is the front and engine braking only affects rear wheel. So he’s probably grabbing front brake off screen and using rear brake as well. I’d rather use only rear brake in an emergency situation than risk engine braking too hard at extreme speed in effect reducing rpms and stalling resulting in rear tire lock up. At least with rear brake it’s only one variable to control. With that hard of braking the rear would be deweighing and risk of losing traction would be higher making controlled rear braking more important. And trying to down shift rev match with that much braking may result in bouncing on the front brake leading to unsmooth front braking and loss of front tire control. My thoughts

Try it and you will probably avoid a lot of these “i almost died” situations. I have close calls too, but you know what I do. I let it go and ride on and enjoy my day. I used to be a biker, and I get it. But a lot of what I see in these videos is bikers feeling that only they have the only right to the road, and generally ride waaaay to fast in traffic - when they fully understand that drivers in cars do not always know how fast they are approaching

There isn't much you can do too stop other drivers from changing lanes.
Specially when you aren't visible between cars or are in the middle of filtering between 3 or 5 cars back at that very moment they look in their mirror & start moving over.
That will always happen, it's simply a matter of when it happens not if it happens.
Should always be that you ride defensive as if you are invisible too ofc as well.
It's your own responsibility too operate a vehicle safely after all.
I think it was meant for air cooled bikes originally, but what he is doing is legal in California. There are safety guidelines (not law) like not going 10 or 15 over the flow of traffic up until the speed limit. Basically if you fit between vehicles and you're not on the shoulder, you're legal.
@@hackmattr Actually, the "old " CHP guidelines were tossed about 3 years before AB51 was passed. Currently, there are no "official" guidelines, despite the subscript of the law requiring a panel to create them.
Salty P It was never illegal to lane split in California, and we've always done it. They only codified the law to allow better prosecution of drivers who cut off riders, or purposely hinder their travel. Arguments for the law also pointed out that filtering out motorcycles from heavy and slow traffic, creates more room for cars, and removes the hazard of collision with riders.
There are no speed restrictions in the law, but obviously you cannot exceed the posted limit.
Ride stupid in between traffic, and the Police will give you a ticket for riding stupid. Ride safely, and they will ignore you

my guess, "Load pipes save lifes" so lots of riders think to revbomb instead on actually slowing down. or the guy just panicked and pulled clutch thinking it was brake in moment for whatever reason.
90% braking is the front and engine braking only affects rear wheel. So he’s probably grabbing front brake off screen and using rear brake as well. I’d rather use only rear brake in an emergency situation than risk engine braking too hard at extreme speed in effect reducing rpms and stalling resulting in rear tire lock up. At least with rear brake it’s only one variable to control. With that hard of braking the rear would be deweighing and risk of losing traction would be higher making controlled rear braking more important. And trying to down shift rev match with that much braking may result in bouncing on the front brake leading to unsmooth front braking and loss of front tire control. My thoughts

I used to be a biker, and I get it. But a lot of what I see in these videos is bikers feeling that only they have the only right to the road, and generally ride waaaay to fast in traffic - when they fully understand that drivers in cars do not always know how fast they are approaching
