  • An augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) device, is a tablet, board, or laptop that helps someone with a speech or language impairment to communicate. In special education classrooms, AAC devices are often present as learners may be nonspeaking or nonverbal. In this video, Jen shares how she incorporates AAC into her instruction to support learners who use these devices, while also making learning differentiated to support the diverse needs of her special ed students. She shows how she uses Touch Chat and Core Boards to make activities accessible for all of her learners. Discover how Jen uses AAC while reading a book about taking turns aloud to her class.

HI Jenn, thanks for sharing! Is there a cheat sheet that ECSE teachers can access which breaks down the high frequency words/core words that should be considered teaching first (as well as the "how -to" process)? Our district only uses core boards, however, 95% our our new teachers don't know how to begin teaching these concepts to 3-4 year olds. I provided recommendations but I'm not an LAS. Any recommendations are appreciated! Thanks!

Can you please tell me what type of device you are demonstrating on ? Is that a dedicated device or i-pad? Our district has been ordering i-pads to put touchchat on and although some companies have told us their key guard fits with an i-pad we are finding that they do not and they had to be returned.

Hi there, that is the NovaChat (only available for purchase through PRC/Saltillo store.prc-saltillo.com/ or buy purchasing an iPad and the TouchChat with WordPower application through the iTunes store. If you want to know more about obtaining AAC, email sadie@theautismhelper.com and she can help!
