  • A woman prepares to turn 25.
THIS IS 25 is used with permission from David Mandell. Learn more at blankslatepict....
On the eve of her 25th birthday, Becky readies for her big birthday, taking the prerequisite time to prepare herself not just for the festivities, but for its documentation on social media. She spends endless amounts of time and energy on Instagram, tracking her likes and followers as well as the pictures of others, which portray all the milestones she seems to lack: weddings, vacations, job success.
But as she sails into her party -- much of which is taken up with creating perfect pictures for Instagram -- she's concealing a deeper sorrow under the carefree smiles: she recently had an argument with her friend, an earth-shattering conversation that revealed just how toxic her self-absorption has become and just what her Instagram obsession is costing her.
Writer-director David Mandell's short drama aims to be a generational statement from its title, but it gets its resonance by creating a well-observed, deeply empathetic character portrait of one beautiful, troubled girl and her relationship with social media.
Like a Mobius strip, we see Becky's pains to be "that girl" on social media, as she preens for the camera and contorts herself to create just the right selfie for Instagram. We also see just how saturated her life and her social circle is with social media awareness, with talk of followers and likes. But we also see the insecurity and need for attention that drives her behavior.
Like the glossy, glamorous most-liked pictures on Instagram, the film has the polished, sun-soaked look peculiar to films set in California, filled with a brightness and luminosity that seems to cover everything with a sheen of blithe, carefree prosperity.
Actress Isabel Pakzad does a terrific job balancing the essential divided selves of her role. She plays the persona of the popular, beautiful and successful social media "It girl" with aplomb, but when the story goes deeper, she also hints at Becky's despair and possible depression, flickering between hurt, self-awareness, self-loathing and vulnerability.
When her friend Chelsea confronts her about her self-absorption in a well-balanced, emotionally complex scene that forms the emotional heart of the film, we understand exactly where Chelsea is coming from, but Pakzad also plays just enough of her character's core of emptiness and isolation that we can see it's not just a character flaw of selfishness, but something deeper and sadder at work. The realization drives her to the brink of the unthinkable, but then she gets a small reminder of what really matters -- enough to put on a smile and a happy face once again for the pictures.
THIS IS 25 begins with a breezy glossiness that resembles the persona of its central character, and functions also as a portrayal of what it means to come of age and into adulthood with an anonymous, distant yet all-powerful audience. It also asks questions of what role social media plays in mental health and possibly illness. As it proceeds, though, its storytelling goes underneath the pretty but brittle surface and into deeper, more resonant territory.
We may not all be social media stars, but there is enough exploration of the divide between public and private selves to reflect many people's experiences, not just the social media generation. Most of us have faces that we spackle on to cover our deep-seated insecurities and inadequacies, in order to get through life. But what happens when the mask we put on becomes the self? With the relentless documentation of today, the lines can become perilously blurred.

This is why I isolate myself when I'm depressed so I wont seem self centered. It's a vicious cycle. I'm only social when I'm feeling happy. I dont think any of my immediate family or close friends recognize that I'm going through anything. It's very lonely.

I tend to always isolate myself when I'm depressed as well because I don't think people will understand, but I don't think it's a healthy way to process our feelings. It's important to talk to someone about it, whether it's on online support forums or through professional help. Please don't suffer alone.

Same hun. It's very, very common. But it's also a very common character trait of addicts. So just make sure you're not using when you isolate. Otherwise you can get down a slippery slope. Trust me. I know. But it makes perfect sense that you want to isolate when you feel down. Thank you for your honesty!

I'm generally avoidant by default, but I will isolate from friends when I am in a specific sector of my depressive episodes... the kind where I am afraid I will say something wrong to said friends, something that I would regret later. It's rare I end up in that place, but it does happen, and I think it's more a safety thing for my friendships than anything else. It's the one exception I make to a statement I otherwise agree with: you should open up to your trusted friends about your depression. But yeah, when I know the darkness and potential anger are on a chemical level that might turn into a lash-out against someone I care about, it's time to bolt down and ride it out until I'm a little more with it.

But also on the fact that the one with the sick mom said ‘there are bigger problems out there’ because from personal experience ive had friends tell me that when i listen to their problems and it hurts, at this point for myself i dont tell people my problems anymore because i know theyre going to act like its not important to me at all.

The issue is not that she’s depressed. Depression is awful and I sympathize with those who suffer from it. What this girl was doing was, to put it crudely and to quote Chelsea, “sitting on the couch and crying because she doesn’t have the life she wants”. It’s just self-loathing, and THAT gets tiring for everyone. Depression needs support; self-loathing and throwing a pity party is not depression.

I feel the friend. No one likes being a dumping ground for your friend’s negative feelings all the time, even if you want to be a good friend and be there for them, and she was probably willing to put up with it until the main character dismissed what she was going through.
That said, the friends clap back about “more going on in the world” wasn’t a good response, either. Just because other people have it worse doesn’t mean that you’re not allowed to be sad or stressed out about your personal life. I mean, at the end of the day, it’s still your life that you’re living and that doesn’t stop just because you acknowledged that little Jimmy hasn’t eaten a real meal in days because his parents can’t afford groceries.

My boyfriend bought me a pink nightie for my birthday present, and I really thought this sucked too, literally. It did not seem like a present for me, but for him. I did not ask for a pink nightie. At 25, I was pregnant and getting married. And also trying to figure out myself, get my career in order as well as finances. Social media contributed to and amplified my depression. I had a lot of reasons to be depressed but now at 28, I'm realizing there are alot of reasons to not be, and that you have to fight for the life you want. So wipe your tears, get that anger out and screw the rest of them over there and what they're doing. Logging out of social media helps, too. Just run your race and be kind. And seek the therapy and treatment you need to better your life and the life of your loved ones. I did, and I'm not regretful. Life is full of ups and downs. And everyone hits a low for varying reasons. And things like death, accidents and illnesses are unavoidable and unpredictable. So that's why to me, I felt I was wasting my life away wishing I could die or hating my life and being so sad, yet I knew I couldn't get out of it alone. To all of those suffering from depression, you're not alone, and you're not over reacting. Life is sad and hard, but there's hope.

    Mother Mother
    Song by Tracy Bonham:
    Mother, mother, how's the family?
I'm just calling to say hello
How's the weather? How's my father?
    Am I lonely? Heavens know
    Mother, mother, are you listening?
Just a phone call to ease your mind
    Life is perfect, never better
Distance making the heart grow fond
When you sent me off to see the world
Were you scared that I might get hurt?
Would I try a little tobacco?
Would I keep on hiking up my skirt?
    I'm hungry, I'm dirty
I'm losing my mind, everything's fine
    I'm freezing, I'm starving
I'm bleeding to death, everything's fine
    Yeah, I'm working, making money
I'm just starting to build a name
I can feel it, around the corner
I could make it any day
Mother, mother, can you hear me?
Sure I'm sober, sure I'm sane
    Life is perfect, never better
Still your daughter, still the same
If I tell you what you want to hear
Will it help you to sleep well at night?
Are you sure that I'm your perfect dear?
Now just cuddle up and sleep tight
    I'm hungry, I'm dirty
I'm losing my mind, everything's fine
    I'm freezing, I'm starving
I'm bleeding to death, everything's fine

    • @saccade7718
      @saccade7718 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

On the surface what she said is true but as someone with depression, anxiety disorder and etc. It's not that simple. These aren't actions that we want to take, they are an unovoidable state of mind that require a lot to overcome. It's portrayed so perfectly by how she trys to convince herself she's happy in the end and fails over and over again and how when she talks to someone she does the same. She isn't being entirely selfish as she doesn't want to bring down those around her and fights her own mind to do so. It takes a lot out of us to do that. However, we try and find that one person we trust and we find happiness in and we inadvertently use them to supply ourselves with happiness. Once it becomes too much for them, like it did the black lady, they retaliate and we get thrown deeper because now the one person we felt closest to doesn't feel the same and is hurt by our actions and we punish ourselves deeply for it. It's a very ugly and nasty way of life that takes so much to change and some people never get that chance because they commit suicide because they are so convinced they are worthless to everyone around them and that no matter what people say and do to convince them otherwise, they are just lying to make them feel better.
Mental disorders aren't a joke and depression is one of the toughest because you're stuck in it. If you have true, diagnosed, depression; life can be hell. You lose all motivation, love for people, hobbies, and yourself, and think everything you do is the wrong thing. It really hurts and I really hope people out there who understand push through it. It WILL get better and I believe in you all.

Depression a set back to achieving your goal of happiness. A feeling that washes over you like waves in the ocean. At each tide you have to work ten times harder to avoid drowning. There are moments when you feel like there is no one to throw you a raft. So you sink further into thoughts about how you're not worth it. Being a person that experiences this, I'm learning to float above and let go of the things that try to hold me. It's not easy but I'm trying. I'm building my boat filled with all my hope. I only allow people that won't hurt me. It's hard to trust in others because they seem like sharks coming to eat you. So I watch cautiously. Avoiding thoughts that might harm me. I want to stay dry and no longer drown myself in tears of my own agony. The pain that I put myself through. And if I sink again, it's time to learn to swim. I AM HERE FOR YOU!! WE ALL WILL MAKE IT THROUGH!!! TO AN ISLAND OF OUR YOUTH AND TRUTH.

As someone who's battled with depression myself, I couldn't relate to her character at all. She's basically a very high functioning "depressed" narcissist who seems very shallow and has the ideal life (not saying that people who don't have rough lives can't be depressed). I didn't get sense of real hopelessness from her nor does this show depression in a realistic manner. Btw, the way she replied other friend's mother being sick was extremely rude..

Our future mothers...the women who will be responsible for keeping the human race going naturally and yet most of them frown upon children, cooking, cleaning and being financially aware...all things that are a part of raising a family...which most of them no longer want anyway because their natural biological purpose has been presented to them like a jail sentence. You’re right. I’m in my late 30’s now. My friend group is small, devoted and tight. I feel like in my 20’s I had SOOOOO many “friends”, but as you grow older you become so much more aware of the qualities you need in friendship. The people who check in just to say hi when they instinctively know you’re having a hard time. We’ve been through parental and grandparent and other close family deaths. Divorces and breakups. Some of us have chronic illnesses that cause us to rearrange and cancel plans. We’ve been through fertility issues. Adoption. All of the things. And we’ve grown into friends who are more than just posts on IG with random hashtags. The friends you’re too busy making memories with to worry about posing for photos are the ones that are you’re real tribe. The ones that will take a phone call at 3am Bc you’re in so much pain from heartbreak or depression or literally (and I speak from excruciating experience) literally sitting on the bathroom floor as I await my 5th miscarriage. So yes. 1 amazing friend or just a small tight group is so much better than a room full of people who are looking you up and down, and talking about you behind your back. The ones who show up for photo ops and free booze. Those aren’t friends. Daily “likes” don’t mean anything.

Then you need to accept that you are ill.
    That being ill is okay.
And that it is not your fault.
And then getting better, how pointless, what a bother.

    • @joecarom391
      @joecarom391 5 ปีที่แล้ว +32

That might apply to some of your experiences, however, I would be quite careful with such generalizations.
Relating to causes and symptoms alike.
Also close attention is needed to distinguish the two in the first place, yet alone their relation to one another.
It is also advisable to stop spiking your approach to recovery with implications of blame, such as "procrastination, no real goals" etc. A lot of depressed people are incredibly susceptible, hungry even for more self-blame.
In my experience, it can hit pretty much every one.
Just thinking of my law school, so many passionate, smart and driven students.
I don't think they even know how to spell procrastination. And a good amount of them cares deeply for their studies and loves being involved...
Or think of mothers that love their child and the purposeful direction their life seems to have taken and still...
      Everything starts feeling empty.
Some of them in fact continue functioning like clockwork. It's bizarre, if they didn't tell you, you wouldn't dream of how casually they consider ending themselves.
Scary as it is, loving families, fulfilling careers, goals and impeccable to-do lists can't prevent depression.
Implying otherwise, will only validate people's perception of themselves as a failure, with dangerous consequences.
It's a complex disease, what helps one won't help another.
If you know people well enough for a tough love approach, that approach should still be considered closely. Ideally by a professional.
To all afflicted I d always suggest opening up to people.
      You are not alone.
People care, whether you think yourself deserving or not.

you need to be educated on how the brain works, depression comes from impotency, that you lose control over things, in your life, the thing is .. the way you think, the kind of "material" aka food you give to your brain, define your mood, every human on this planet have to question what he likes, what he dislikes, what he'd like to do/make, if you don't improve, you regress, either one or another.
When depressed you cannot think about good things and feel good right away, you have to improve your feelings ,step by step, feeling angry is better than depressed, because you gain some control and feel better then... and I suggest you start by that, be angry.
About implication of blame, telling someone nothing is his fault means that he has control on nothing. That doesn't help. You are depressed because you thought the wrong way, "i have no luck" "i'm poor" "I dont deserve it or that" "Im ugly" "Im incompetent" .... you focus on bad elements only, slowly but surely, led you in this state.
change thoughts -> gain control -> energy -> do what you like -> goal -> faith
if you are really depressed, go watch Bob Proctor videos, Kevin Trudeau, Goddard Neville etc etc

On one hand, you have the birthday girl who appears to be rude by not caring/ paying attention to what the other girl says and being selfish, but in reality she’s trapped on her own thoughts because she’s depressed. The only thing she can think about is how she hates her life situation at the moment.
On the other hand, the girl with the sick mother tries to minimize her friend’s problems by saying that there are worst things in the world to worry about, that’s true but I don’t think that’s the best way to comfort someone who’s depressed. But at the same time she’s right, she hears her complaints and everything, doesn’t say a thing and her friend doesn’t seem as preoccupied as her

Some are criticizing her behavior and saying it in a way as if her depression isn’t valid, and others are using her depression as an excuse for her awful behavior THIS ISNT THE POINT OF THE VIDEO. This is a story that is almost 100% real to someone out there. There are people out there who have a glamorous life like hers with glamorous bodies and glamorous friends, but depression doesn’t pick and choose who it affects. Does it excuse any behavior? No. But it does show a reality to things not seen to the naked eye. No one is immune to emotions, and the film just shows that. It isn’t excusing her behavior or validating it 🤦🏽‍♀️ just enjoy the film for what it is.

Yeah exactly. We can call her "bad" for being selfish and making things about her, or we could also focus on her friend's complete dismissal of the fact that she's trying hard to communicate something she's feeling. Both of their feelings are valid and perspective is everything, that's all this film is showing us. Someone's duality and daily struggle.

I turn 25 in a couple of months and I've really been down on myself feeling like I've already pissed away my future. I'll only be 25 with more life ahead of me than up to this point so I fail to understand why I carry this mentality around with me. I finally took the plunge and deleted all of my social media - I told the girl I was seeing that I needed space right now and that this isn't a good time for me to be putting time into someone else when I desperately needed to work on me first.
It sucked at first but after a few weeks of only focusing on myself and not stressing out about keeping up on the lives of others while comparing myself to everyone else I started to notice a huge change from within. I love myself more. I look in the mirror and feel better about me because I'm not comparing myself to everyone elses best everyday. It's easier to see the best things about yourself when you aren't exposed to the picture perfect moments of everyone else while they hide away the bad moments. No one is perfect but social media allows for everyone to share only those moments. You won't see someone take a picture of themselves crying in a bath tub with a pill bottle in your hand. You'll only see them after they get dressed up and put on a smile. It creates a negative stigma that is very damaging to the mental health of everyone involved.
Stop living your life for others and live it for yourself. Do things for you and focus on self care. Don't do things just because you might get attention on the internet. You won't be happy.

This is the second show in two days that I've seen address mental illness. It's about time a light is shown into our world...a small glimpse of what we deal with daily...the struggle to just survive from yourself.

Sit down with someone you trust, like your mom or a close friend.
      Even a therapist.
