I don't know if anyone has said this, but I like taking a sheet of wax paper, crumpling it up and buffing the pages, readjusting the wax paper after a few swipes. I have it in craft room to separate pages while I'm painting anyway, and for $1 at the Dollar store, can't beat price
THANK YOU!!!! i had a melt down just the other day about my pages sticking so much they tore and i had to cut them out! i am trying this first thing in the morning! Absolutely love your work Mimi
I use Daddy Vans unscented Beeswax Furniture Polish...I originally used it for making my printed digital art brighter and sealed but since I watched your video I realize that I could the Daddy Vans same as the candle...so thanks for this smart tip...Oh PS...just brush it on your page and also I can still work on my Journal page with paint...Also I like to add that I mod podge my pages to the hilt and started using the Daddy Vans at the end of page project just to seal it up and it still stays great...
I just learnt something as I didn't know you could use furniture polish on printed paper :) Yes the candle works great to seal a page but you can't add more once it's done. I don't use mod podge or varnish because they end up sticking together with the change of weather, I find the candle is enough ;-)
I literally found this video a couple of hours after one of my pages ripped and got completely ruined. But now I know, so using it on top of the salvaged page. Thanks 😊
I saw one of your tutorials today, can't remember which one , but it was about deli paper. Can't find the stuff here in Canada either. I was using parchment paper under my sheets in my art journal to protect it , it is also called baking paper. Just wanted to let you know baking paper will not work as it has a silicon treated surface so you paint will peel off in time. Bloody heck. I spill paint on my baking paper all the time while journaling but as soon as it drys it peels off. Some one sent me a few deli paper prints in happy mail and the paint doesn't peel it looks like it just has a light parfin surface. So I am out off luck as well.
Thanks for your feedback. The video you saw where I used baking paper is very old and I now sell the 'real' deli paper in my store mixedmediastore.com.au. If you need any, I can ship to Canada as deli paper is so light :)
Amazing! Thank you for sharing this technique. Currently I use wax paper between pages that I have finished and stopped using Mod Podge to seal the pages. My first art journal was ruined because of two things. Sticking pages where I had used glossy Mod Podge not knowing that it takes a lot longer time to completely dry even though it feels dry to the touch, and my first journal was a file folder journal taped together using clear packaging tape because I ran out of masking tape. I didn't realize that the paint would not stick permanently to the packaging tape and that combined with the glossy finish...well you can imagine the problems. I am so happy for this technique you shared! Wax without the wax paper!
+aworkinprogress2 I understand your frustration as I have been through it too! Glad I could help :) Make sure to get on my newsletter to get all my free tips and videos mimibondi.com/newsletter ;-) xo mimi
Fantastic tip thank you! I just recently started journalling and was so upset when two of my pages stuck together - and I had let it dry really well. Lucky I spotted your channel on TH-cam.... your videos are amazing and truly inspiring! I LOVE YOUR ART!
Yes! Try it as it feels so liberating! Make sure to check out my book and e-course where I do a lot of that while teaching you my techniques step-by-step: mimibondi.com/beginner-mixed-media-book-videos :) xx
So glad I could help! Better late than never right? :) I hope you are keeping in touch via my Sunshine Newsletter if you'd like to get all my free tutorials, tips and inspiration mimibondi.com/newsletter xx
Haven't tried that but I'd be concerned about getting it stuck in nooks and crannies when I have texture on my page? This can happen with the wax too of course. Thanks for sharing ;-)
@@MimiBondi as stated a very tiny, tiny dusting of powder is all it takes and no, it doesn’t collect in textured pages and if it did a large fluffy brush will correct the too heavily applied powder. Hope this tidbit provides you with relief of your fears of over powdering a page.
Such a good tip and a cheap one too, I have been using a beeswax also mentioned by other artists, but it is very expensive and doesn't go very far either (although it leaves a lovely scent behind lol). I am so glad I found your channel and I have subscribed, can't wait to watch more of your videos. Tfs x
+Elizabeth Naisbitt I have also found out that the moleskin journals are the worst ones for sticking, especially down the binding at the middle of the pages. x
+Elizabeth Naisbitt Thanks Elizabeth, I have only used Moleskine and a spiral journal so I did not know. Glad you enjoy my channel, feel free to join me and others in the private Facebook group 😊 facebook.com/groups/mixedmediatribe
I'd heard about all sorts of waxes then buffing then another layer. Ugh. This is the first time I heard of basic candle wax. What do you do with textured surfaces? Have you had anything resist the wax? Since it is just wax I'd guess a simple low heat hot pot might allow you to paint into textured surfaces? Of course storing them in the hot garage would be right out! Furniture and car waxes can handle the heat but aren't as chemical free. Love this idea.
+SusanJane Ankeney WOO_HOO! I've tried a candle on watercolor pencil and crayons, pencil and colored pencils, even ColorBurst -- it's working like total wow! I'm off to try PanPastels and others. So happy :)
I use Dorland's Wax Medium to keep my pages from sticking and it works like a charm. Dorland's is non-yellowing and it adds a nice finish to the page making colors a bit richer. Ha, but it costs more than 50 cents. ;)
I make my own with bees wax and oil...1/4 beeswax cut to smaller bits and 1 cup oil. you can use Olive oil or other kinds of kitchen grade oils ( this wax is also used for wood cutting boards hahaha thats why food grade). Mix wax and olive oil in a large pyrex glass mixing cup. Microwave it while watching it and stir at 1 min incriments. when the wax is just melted, remove and stir.........and stir. stirring from outside edges in as it hardens on the outside first and you want a nice homogeneous mass. when its fully mixed up and warn not hot, I put it into recycled cold cream containers. once cool it should harden up but yet be soft to touch and spreads nice......makes your skin feel nice too hahaha warning do not leave in the microwave and walk away............beeswax has a low flash point so you dont want to just leave it. Stir every min or so til its melted.
I've been using the white unscented candles for some time and they REALLY make a difference with non sticking. After applying the wax, I lightly burnish it with a dry paper towel to get rid of the little bits and pieces though
This is a totally newbie question: I'm guessing we do this waxing AFTER our pages are completed? In other words, when we are finished and don't plan to do anything more with the pages?
That is correct Marie, once you page is finished and you won't touch it anymore. Please post future questions in the facebook support group, thanks ;-)
There is also a product that you can put onto your page : Dorland's wax medium. It does the same thing as with the candle but when you have a lot of texture on your page it's easier to use the Dorland's Wax than a "rigid" candle. My art journal couldn't survive without it... ;)
+Marie-Pierre Taillon Thanks for the tip Marie-Pierre, another viewer mentioned that product as well! It's hard to find in Australia and is very expensive... This tip definitely works best for pages with not too much texture (most journals thankfully) but I wonder if melting the same candle and brushing a thin layer would work just as well for lots of texture...?
Glad I could help Laura! I hope you are keeping in touch via my Sunshine Newsletter if you'd like to get all my free tutorials, tips and inspiration mimibondi.com/newsletter xx

What happens when you have a book or journal that you add paint to over time as and when you have any spare paint and then you go to another page and do similar another time. In the meantime, the pages have stuck already before you have had time to finish them??

+Decemberrose66 I would not bring a heat gun anywhere near any of my art! If you mean a hair dryer or an art heat tool then I've had no problem. You should only use lightly anyway ☺
If you are worried about heat you can try tim holtz microglaze or cold wax medium. They give a very thin glaze of transparent protection and are waterproof. Very thin and smooth. Works great! Make sure your page is done though as it stops inks or watercolor from reacting and won't really accept anything water-based over it well
Not if you use a white candle with no dye in it :) If you have any other questions, please post in the FB group setup especially for this: facebook.com/groups/mixedmediatribe :)
great idea! I'm going to go out and get a candle! Another question. When using a Dylusions journal or a moleskine sketchbook I find that halfway through it becomes very stiff. I like these journals but also like spiral journals so I don't have this problem. Any suggestions? Thanks Mimi!
Thank you so much for actually showing the results. I just purchased Rangers Distressed Wax sealer so do you think that will work also since I already have it
+rasheenaturallynlove nelson I have never tried that product so give it a go and when you run out, use a candle before buying more ;-) If you haven't already, please subscribe to my Sunshine Newsletter for more fun videos mimibondi.com/newsletter :)
