I used hairspray on my pastel drawings that I did in the 60's. It was lacquer; worked just fine.

Awe the beauty of a young brain, wonderful tip. Thanks for sharing, I wasn't happy with some of my pages finish. The clear gesso will work, and I'll love the added tooth.

I use the Dorlands Wax and I find that using a small amount on a cloth and let it dry to a haze.
After it is dry, I use a very soft cloth and gently buff the page.
I will give the clear gesso and try and see how that works.
    Thanks for sharing.

I use a damp makeup wedge sponge to spread sealers like mod podge. Spreads well and can be reused and no brush strokes or loose hairs.

I looked it up on amazon. You can buy 2 cans of krylon workable fixative 11 oz. cans for $15. I discovered many kinds of mod podge too. Sparkle, silver shimmer, brushstroke matte, gloss, fabric, paper matte, hard coat, etc. Most of them were new to me! It's a 16 oz. jar for $8. They're acid free, but not archival grade necessarily. I've never used bees wax on anything. Maybe I'll try it some time.
Thanks for making and posting this video. It's very helpful to me!

Dorland wax is my long time solution, but the clear gesso's a great idea. If I don't like the tooth of the gesso, I can top it off with Dorland and I'll still have the stick-down advantage of gesso. Thanks much!

Great tip - thanks Jennibellie. I tend to use an acrylic satin lacquer spray (from Chestnut Products) as it seals and bonds beautifully (quick drying) and doesn't affect water-based media. Goes on matte-looking with one layer, but glosses with more layers so you can play with the final look of the page a bit. It's available cheaply compared to other sprays and doesn't yellow even in direct sunlight. Hope that's useful to someone somewhere! - Shroo:)x

Judikins Microglaze. It takes a very small amount. Rub it on gently & buff it. Works great for water soluble pages without a lot of run- on. Also works as a resist. Similar to a wax, I've heard some use Chapstick as a substitute.

I used clear gesso for the first time yesterdayj, I was adding some tea leaves for texture on a dark background and it shows up a bit white under the dark tea leaves. Maybe it will go away over time, not sure. It's a top brand too.

I have been experimenting with as many different ways to seal pages as I can think of -- and those suggested to me -- just bought some clear gesso today. Cannot wait to see how it works. Interesting tip on the heat/wax tip. I do not particularly like the feel of the wax either but plan to try Dorland wax because I am on a mission to try different techniques(;0)

Krylon workable fixative is safe for pastels, chalk, or pencil pieces. I use a big 11 ounce can. It lasts and lasts. You might not realize this, but Mod Podge is available in matte It's a lot cheaper than Gesso or Golden medium. I might try using hairspray when I run out of the workable fixative. I believe in thrift.

I have made pages with modge podge and now have the dilema of them sticking together. I used baby powder over them and it helps a little. I was wondering if putting any of the suggestions, clear gesso, fixitive etc over the modge podge will work or will they react and end up with a worst mess?

Hi! I have a couple questions: does gesso make the pages stronger? How many coats should I use? What can I coat with it?
The reason I ask, is because I would like to preserve the pages of my Wreck This Journal series books and I have so much mixed media in it.
Someone said to use packing tape. But I don't know if I want to do that. Especially if the tape wrinkles up when I try to lie it down.
Please help if you can! Thanks ;)

So, you use gesso on a page, but what about the page opposite to it. Do you gesso that as well or do you suggest using alternative pages in a journal? Your videos are really informative. Thank you.

    • @jennibellie
      @jennibellie  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Both, but it depends on what elements I have used on the page. Sometimes I don't use anything at all, or use matt gel sparingly as I go along. I just use intuition.

Dear jennibellie--- I have been looking and searching and researching for a couple weeks now looking for a "sealant" for a new journal I purchased. Im a journal lover and collector- but this journal was pretty expensive and is really important to me and I have page ideas for it, I just havent been able to start it yet because I want to make sure whatever pages i make- they will stay sealed how I want them. I liked your idea of the clear liquid gesso- but am wondering if that can be used with the same result on tea dyed paper??? Any info would be much appreciated! Thanks!

Jennie, does *tooth* equal *grit* does that mean extra texture to a page or layout and does Gesso do that with everything. I have never used it but want to try. Please can you give me some more information on it. I know you dont like advertising brands but can you please tell us more about this.

Your pup has a really impressive nose! Thanks for your tips--really helpful. I have a tip, too--when you have a sticky/tacky page, try dusting it with a bit of talcum powder--and I do mean talcum (a lot of dusting powders are starch, which is water-reactive). I personally use Gold Bond, or else Jean Nate (which smells LOVELY, by the way!), and I dust it on with a wee dusting brush--I keep the powder & the brush in an old yogurt cup with a snap-on lid.

Hey Jenni ... thanks so much for the tips, I watch all your video & have learned a lot. I would be careful with hair spray over ink.. I have used hair spray for years as a cleaner for ink in clothing, carpet, and even on my car dash from a broken pen that left a big ink puddle. So keep your eye on it. Thank you for sharing your creative works I enjoy them a lot. ~Pauline
