We are Joe and Liisu, relatively new to TH-cam but really excited to be a part of this community. We live small and sustainably in my home on wheels (a lovely van called Freyja) and from time to time out of our backpacks (we have not named the backpacks yet). I'm Norwegian and visited Lofoten for the first time this summer. I decided to take a late ferry from Bodø to Moskenes, and we arrived around midnight. Best idea ever! Lofoten in midnight sun with no tourists on a motorcycle was amazing!
I just focused on riding, but next year I may go back to do some hiking and fishing. If your timing is right, you can avoid the worst tourist rush. Either go outside the tourist season, or go hiking at night. In the summer, the sun is always shining anyway 🌞

I visited at the end of March/ beginning of April of this year.. For my first time.. And I have to say it is at the top of all places that I have ever been to on this mud ball we call Earth..There was plenty of snow and it was glorious.. Stunning views everywhere you looked.. Not very crowded at all.. A great time to visit..Cod fishing was at it peak..And I got to see the Northern Lights for the first time in my life.. And it was thrilling to stand and stare at that magnificent sky... Truly a blessing to have the opportunity.. I appreciate and enjoy your videos very much.. especially in Scandinavia....
I've lived in Lofoten for 4 years and the biggest problem with the amount of tourists is not even the parking or traffic. It's that everyone tries to make a profit with AirBNB rentals, so locals have a huge problem finding anywhere permanent to live. There are few places for rent and some of those even rent out from September to May and do AirBNB during the summer, so you need to move again after a few months. It's really bad for local businesses, when they have trouble recruiting workers, because they can't find anywhere to live. It's really sad and should be more regulated. And that shifting cold weather is the standard also in summer. We used to joke that summer is the nicest day of the year ^^ Good that you had proper clothes for your hike, many tourists don't and need to be rescued in shorts, t-shirt and flip flops.If going anywhere in Norway I'd ask locals whenever you can. They can often point you to less overrun places that are just as nice as the popular ones.

I couldn't agree more. I spent just over a week there last September although on foot and public transport (bus and ferry). I was fortunate that in a whole week it only rained for about 8 hours and all in one night, although the clouds rolled in every night and denied me a sight of the aurora. Mid-september meant there were no long queues and I was able to wild camp on one of the most well known and popular beaches for 3 days, sharing with only 1 or 2 other tents. As someone who's spent 30 years in adventure tourism I can say Lofoten isn't overrated but you have to choose your time to visit to get the most from your visit. As you rightly say, it's importand to support the many small local businesses too.

Hi! Superb video with editing and absolutely gorgeous filming! However, since a big point here is whether Lofoten is too touristic of worth visiting, I fully agree that the infrastructure in Lofoten is at it's limit on what comes to tourism. But addressing the issue, I would like to point out that Northern Norway as a whole is very beautiful, and I think that nearby places such as Senja, Vesterålen or Lyngen really don't lose to Lofoten in terms of landscapes or hikes, and they are way less crowded compared to Lofoten islands. And yes I know, to Norwegians this isn't even the real north. Also, I think it would be nice if the other less known but still amazing hiking trails, would get more attention, instead of almost always featuring the Reinebringen stairs (Even though the view it's amazing, and the stairs are amazing, it's still stairs!!) or Kvalkvika Beach / Ryten hike.
But nevertheless, I enjoyed the video and commentary very much! :)

From Sweden here. I worked in Svolvaer 15 years ago, my GF at the time begged me to join her working/traveling and when we took the train up to Norway and I couldnt see anything but snow, everything was white but the train kept going. At first I thought, wtf have you talked me into doing.. But man, I LOVED IT. I'm a nature guy so for me it was an awesome experience and I met really nice people from work. One was working at the WW2 museum in Svolvaer and we shared a lot of nice conversations. I loved that you could literally go on a "unknown" trail and up seeing Kong Harald (King Harald) statue in the middle of the trail in absolutely NOWHERE. The only thing I had problem with during the summers were that it was bright 24/7 but when autumn hits thats no longer the problem 😂 Respect nature and the location you are travelling to, be sure to visit local cafés and so on. ❤ Love, from the man who claimed to tourists he was growing wine grapes on Svolvaer geita.🤩

I count myself lucky having been able to lead groups to visit this amazing place. On more than one occasion I have also caught the Northern Lights here! Most recent was earlier this year in January and in February!
I was in Lofoten in the middle of august and I had expected it to be super crowded. But actually to my surprise I found it to be very calm and not so many tourist. When I asked the locals they said that there is a huge decrease of tourist from the second week of august.
Wonderful filming and narrating. I live in the south of Norway and last September I went to Lofoten and Vesterålen Islands for the first time. It was a truly spectacular trip. I love mountains and the mountain scenery here is among the best I have seen anywhere. Had very good weather. If you can go on short notice, its best to check the weather because it can rain a lot.

It was fun 15 years ago climbing Reinebringen and being up there almost entirely alone, any time of the day. On the other hand, the stone steps make it so much easier now, it used to be quite a muddy hike, especially after rain.

Thanks for the great video. I am from Lofoten (living in Bodø). I agree that Lofoten gets a bit over-crowded during summer. However, one of the things that irritates the most for locals is the slow driving mobile home vehicles (and other foreign cars). The speed limit is 80 on the highway and even smaller roads, but many drive in 40-50 and even stops in the middle of the road. That is both dangerous and very irritating.
Im visiting in February, besides the cruise ride to see the eagles and the fjords, what would you recommend? Thanks in advance.

Great production and filming :) But the beautiful Kannesteinen in the TH-cam at 10.38 is not in Lofoten at all, but at the west coast of Norway , about 8 km from Måløy, and 1300 km from Lofoten :)

Nice video . I have been in Lofoten last late october in a roadtrip with my car for 9600 km. Also visited Lapand , Nordkapp , Tromso .... It was freezing between -10 and -23 degrees. Great places to visit and for sure i will come back!

Lofoten and Vesteralen were for sure the most beautiful places I’ve ever visited and I’m so happy we did this in 2010 before the real mass tourism hit. I have such good memories from the week we ended up staying. Thank you for taking me back to that time!

Yes, it's busy - because of our itinerary, we tried to visit Henningsvaer on a Saturday, in July, and basically Henningsvaer was FULL! - but the islands are just gorgeous. In July the roadside verges are thick with wildflowers, the scenery is spectacular, and the roads are delightful.
This was the best film of visiting Lofoten I've ever seen. And I was there already, going this year again and plan much more in the future. Not mentioning hundreds of other films I've seen sofar. So positive and passionate, always a smile on face ! Absolutely stunning comentary. Thank you so much !

I have traveled Norway from far south to far north many times, since I grew up in north and now live in south. Lofoten is for sure something else.
The reason the ferry to Værøy is free is that in Norway ferry is free all places people live and you can not choose another route. That's why it is not free to the other parts of Lofoten, since you can drive around the fjord. Anyway it is a great alternative if you have the extra time it takes, and is an alternative I will consider the next time I head up north.
Always avoid going while worst tourist seasons. Went hiking with my wife here in Finland, more precisely in Lapland. Took a cottage week after the worst Autumn traffic, so it was pretty cheap and hiking paths had no traffic either. Best way to enjoy these places.
You two made my day and gave me courage! I’m on my way for treatment I always get nervous but if I don’t do this I’m not going to be able to walk until I do … This is partly why I can’t walk much I even struggle to put shoes on so since we are going next month to Iceland 🇮🇸 it’s a good thing that is happening right but my nerves always take over! Hiking Iceland and Norway is magical and daring 😅 Good things don’t come easy! I’m planning Lofoten next year ❤so I’m all ears! I love all your vlogs you are sooo talented

I did the exact same thing and visited in September. I always travel in september/october for that reason. But while some areas are STILL crowded in September like American national parks, most of Norway and Sweden is pretty nice in September. First coz the locals take their holidays in July, second because Autumn and cold temperatures start really early, as early as late August in the Arctic. One shocking thing about the Lofoten too was how I was able to find cheap AirBnBs. Like 80 € per night for a big house with wifi right next to the water ? Yes please. And not in a city, in a remote fishing village. The great thing about the Lofoten is how quickly the weather changes, so you can always see something. Roads go everywhere, they built tunnels and bridges all over, so it feels very safe and more importantly, the roads in Norway are in my opinion the most scenic I've ever seen. Only some roads in the french Alps or New Zealand can compare. Some parking spot in September would still fill up though, there's still many camper vans of course, but locals told me it's nowhere near as awful as it is in july/august. So what I'm trying this year is Trondheim to Narvik : the coastal road and islands, and the wild inland national park in this rarely visited part of the world. A local told a friend living in Oslo this is where the true wild Norway is. There's 0 info on this part of Norway on Lonely Planet or Fodor guides. But every island, every road I'm checking looks just as beautiful as the Lofoten, minus the crowds...But where the guidebooks helped me with the Lofoten is that they ALL said : do not miss the Vesteralen islands. Just as beautiful, but with fewer people. And the books were 100% right.... It was stunning too.
As a Norwegian, on the west coast no less, where we've been reaching towards 300 days of rain it feels like some years, weather is weird, so at least locally to me there's jokes about the weather gods being moody, thus there's the saying "det finnest ikke dårlig vær, kun dårlige klær." Which translates to something akin to there's no bad weather, only bad clothing. :P
( Also, I'm actually genuinely impressed by your pronunciation of Norwegian names and places, both of you. I've seen a few travel blog thingies over the years, and most of them don't even try. )

Very honest. A place can't be blamed for the overtourism. The place can be magical anyway. Look beyond the crowds. I have been a few times to Lofoten and last year I did vanlifeing there in July. A challenge but if you go slightly beside the main road you can find tranquil places even in July!
Was a very good idea passing by Vaeroy. Last summer I passed by Rost and people was greeting me ! Girls in car were horning at me ! All contrary of common norwegian people do. You missed Skrova island, just let your car in Svolvaer (but maybe the ferry is free now ?), take the ferry and climb the top of Skrova, breathtaking view from there too. Also you need to visit Vesteraalen and Senja. TY for the video.

I went in September this year on a photographic tour. Yes, it is expensive but that is partly due to the remote location. The scenery is wonderful and I witnessed unforgettable displays of the aurora on two different nights. Our guide told us that in the summer season almost every parking spot will be occupied by motorhomes by early afternoon which stay there until the next morning. IMHO Lofoten lives up to its reputation as one of the most scenic places on earth. There are places where you can get away from other tourists. Our told us the Senja has much of the same kind of scenery but far fewer visitors.

I grew up and lived in Lofoten near Reine for 19 years, my family left due to the annoyance of not being able to relax at summers like we used to before because of overcrowded tourism. I haven't been there in 5 years now, but I still hear the same from my friends who still reside up there. Most of my generation 20-30 years old dislike tourists a lot, so it will be interesting to see how it turns out when they take over.

Ferries for smaller places are free since those places are more dependent on their ferry to survive and if it is too expensive, people would continue to leave.
Lofoten is beautiful when the weather is nice but I consider it a bit overrated since there are other similar places. Advantage of Lofoten is that there have been made museums so there are things to do even when it is raining.
Hi, I live in Lofoten, i live in Svolvær. And it is so fun to see what you guys think about this place that i have lived in for my whole life, i am 14 years old btw😉. And....june and july, cannot belive how it is even possible to be so many toursists here. everywhere, EVERYWHERE. there are toursists the city is almost only toursists. Ahhhh!😂. anyways, come here in the winter. it is such a beatiful and special time to come

I've visited last year on Halloween day. It was pretty much just a few tourists and not at all crowded.

The endpoint of Lofoten (around Reine) is so full so people and so expensive I will have to seriously reconsider traveling again. Luckily there are other destinations in Norway, which are as nice, but no tourists.
I’m confused.. your channels name is Wild Viking Travel but you didn’t visit Lofotr Viking Museum? That’s too bad but if your budget didn’t allow it I can understand it. I’m happy you got to watch the aurora borealis though 😊 And for those who want to go there forget about June, July and even august, it’s crazy how many rv’s who can fit in those small islands.

Last year it was quite warm and when we got to Northern Finland in September it was even warmer over there.

In northern Norway, nature is boss; we tiny humans are small in comparison (regardless of how big we thought we were).
When the weather is nice, it is extremely nice. When the weather is bad, it can be truly powerful - hold onto your hat.
The nature there teaches us lessons and gives us a healthy and more humble attitude to the environment. Amen.

Yes and now the rules are more strickt. Its not allow to use drone, the Police has closed many parking places in Lofoten becouse tourist not follow the signs and rules. So your parking place at Reine are gone. The Police Will close the Reinebringen from september to May.
First visit in 1982. Last visit in 2009. A lot of visits (10-15 ?) in between. Will we ever come back ? No. Norway sold its soul. Just as Iceland is doing at this very moment (but this is even worse).

I'm curious to why you say that there's thousands of people traveling there over traveled... too hike and the lines and you're the only two people there... I have family that lives in Loufuton it was very profitable for them to move.
