Bro , let me try my best and explain what is possibly happening. There is no time travel going on here. Atlee loves making double roles and probably the different srks you see in the trailer are just blood related and most probably father , son and brother relations. And from the trailer what I get is that There is a soldier (srk with moustache who says the dialogue "So kalee, no deal! " , Deepika is most probably his wife) and that guy is against the young Kalee(Vijay sethupathi) who is a growing weapons dealer at his time. Then some event happens where the soldier is defeated and Kalee wins and around that time is probably when we get to see srk in the "Mummy/Moon knight" outfit and he takes this as the new symbol for his fight for justice and the weird head covering mask is derived from that mummy outfit.
Deepika probably was captured and in the prison where the son srk was born and he grows up to become the police officer and Nayan thara is possibly his fiance and his superior , he may be thinking that his father is dead but actually the soldier srk is alive and is doing the highjacking. Kalee is still alive and became the 4th largest weapons dealer and is now the enemy of the police officer srk.
They will probably start with the train highjacking as the main story and along with the story telling they will explain about the past and about other characters.
NO TIME TRAVEL , Only people of different generations.
There maybe more explanations needed , I think the movie can do that part.
If it was a time travel movie we could possibly hear lot of tic toc with the bgm and they would show the clocks and watches often.

Watch Oru kaidhiyan diary (kamal hassan). This is the 3rd remake of that film. Father vs son movie.....And yes you are true about too much stuff. Watch Atlee's last films. You will know how the film is...He is always same, double triple roles is done by him continuously. His films has always been mediocre with some good moment in between. So manage your expectation accordingly....
