  • Steve extends the cable on his electric hedge trimmer and carries out an up-cycling project. Also, Steve, Imelda and the garden get a much needed haircut!

Hi, I have a very similar cable connector but there is no markings to say which colour cable in which hole ? There is just a Y/G in the middle which I assume is if its needs a yellow and green wire. I’ve been in tears trying to find a video about it and yours is the closest but you say it’s marked on yours.

Very good, informative video, but you made one big mistake. Rather than the cord grip clamping the live and neutral wires, it MUST clamp the outer insulation (orange in this case) for safety reasons.

It appears on your video that you fitted the female end onto the machine which means the Male ends are on the live side so if the plug gets pulled apart the prongs are live and exposed. This is contrary to the instructions. If I misunderstood the way it was done I apologise but that is how I saw it on the video.

The outer insulation DOES go under the cable clamps to hold the cable more securely. I worked for HSS ToolHire for many years and repaired many of these items. Sorry friend but you got that bit wrong.

7:05 I think you've left the inner wires too long. The instructions that come with it say that you should cut 22mm off the outer cable covering, and then 5mm off the live and neutral wires. This way, the outer covering can be clamped under the retainer, to make it more secure.
Also, for anyone else watching this video to help, note that one inner terminal is keyed to match with its outer case, which is also keyed. The other terminal and case are not keyed, so be careful not to connect the wires up to the terminals before you've ensured that the correct case is on the correct cable.
Lastly, bizarrely, even though the instructions are very specific about connecting live and neutral correctly, the outer cases are NOT keyed on one side, so you can easily connect the connector together wrongly (live to neutral). Apparently it will still work (in the UK, at least), but it's not advisable. Just make sure the embossed labels "CONNECT TO MAINS" and "CONNECT TO APPLIANCE" are facing up with you connect them.

You didn't see why way around you connect to the two orange bits or doesn't it make a difference? One video say there is only one way of connecting the two bits but mine seems to fit (sort of) either way.
