    If you happen to ever find yourself slated to have society as a whole decide it would be best if they killed you, the silver lining is that in many parts of the world where this is still a thing, the last meal you ever eat is likely to be significantly better than the ones you’ve been consuming up to that point in prison. So how did this rather odd meal tradition come about and is it actually true death row inmates can get anything they want to eat?

    Philip Wokeman was executed in Nashville TN in 2007. His last meal request was for a large vegetarian pizza to be given to a homeless person. The prison officials refused citing a policy against donating to charities. This news angered and motivated many locals who took it on themselves to carry out Wokeman's request on the day of his execution and vegetarian pizza topped the menu at all Nashville's homeless shelters that night. Supposedly this became a tradition for a few years every May 10 but it's likely died out now. If only they had facebook and TH-cam, it could have spread beyond Tennessee and may still be going today. x

    There was an inmate in Oklahoma that when asked what he wanted for his last meal. His answer was a bit unusual, he said that he wanted a nap because he wouldn't have an appetite. So in the holding cell they used to hold the prisoner before the execution they put in a cot . He and some of the other prisoners on death row had been saving their medications for him so he could overdose himself. So they put him in the holding cell to take his nap. He took all the pills and laid down to die. Unfortunately for him when they came to get him to take him to get executed he was almost dead. So they did CPR on him and called an ambulance to take him to the hospital. After the doctors got him stabilized they took him back to the prison and executed him. Seriously, this really happened.

      Hermann Goring managed to take a cyanide capsule and avoided his sentence as well. The Commandant of the prison got so mad that he cheated the hangman, that he had a stroke and had to be replaced. Another Nuremberg prisoner had also managed to kill himself before the trial had even begun. It is not totally uncommon for death row inmates to kill themselves to deprive the state of their justice, so death watches are generally assigned to them, so the sentences of the courts are carried out, and suicide does not count as having fulfilled the requirements of said sentence.

      I did a sunset foster (basically a hospice foster for fur babies) a few years ago. The cat was dying of stomach cancer. When the day came that she couldn’t eat without immediately getting sick, I had her put down. But heavy cream was her favorite treat, so I took a cup with me. She drank it as the sedative was administered, so she was asleep before she could get sick. She seemed pretty damn happy about that cup of cream.

    • @sylviapark129
      @sylviapark129 4 ปีที่แล้ว +44

      Hello! As a fellow Korean here's a simple answer :)
      1. In Korea we consider the time spent in the womb as life lived which means that when the baby comes out of the womb s/he will be one year old!
      2. Also unlike other countries we don't "gain a year" on our birthday but rather on new years day (usually on 1/1)

    • @sylviapark129
      @sylviapark129 4 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      So if a baby was born on december then s/he is 1 year old but as soon as it's january that child is "technically" two years old. Furthermore that's why students of the same grade all have the same age regardless of their birthday 😁

    First is to make a request for the most expensive mean I can think of. I've heard about several dishes that start at several thousand dollars for a small slice. Think of the Taco Bell servings in Demolition Man.
    Second is a way to say "Screw You!" to the man. Order something you might be allergic to and die the night before. If that doesn't work you may just get a postponement on your execution as you are suddenly ill and unable to attend.

    I toured Maryland's death row facility back in 1999 or so. It was housed in the Old Baltimore City Penitentiary, right smack dab in the middle of Baltimore. It was hell on earth. All the inmates were screaming at us from three tiers of cells. We finally got to death row and a man who had been condemned to death spoke to the students in the group. I was not a student, but my gf was, and that's how I got there. As soon as I figured out that the guy was a lying self-serving psychopath, I was no longer interested in his story, but rather the process. They did get last meals, but it had to be something from the prison kitchen.

      I don’t know the whole history of it, but I believe the entire basis was essentially a loophole stating that the sentence only condemns the prisoner to death once, so they already completed their sentence.
      The only time I’ve heard of it actually being utilized was a case where the attorney was in the process of proving the man was falsely accused, and they tried to act upon that loophole to at least give their client more time. I don’t recall where I read this, though, and I don’t have time to track down sources at the moment, so I’ll go ahead and like your comment in hopes that Simon sees it and is able to better elaborate than I am 😂

      The simple answer is that they served their sentence. Some sailors condemned to keel hauling survived, and were then free of their crime. It's just assumed that the survival rate is not high enough to actually adjust the verbage in most executions. The green mile was an example of how an attempt to successfully execute someone who would have clearly survived the ordeal was unreasonable. He served his sentence and survived longer than anyone else, but they kept frying until he literally caught on fire, and his own blood finally conducted the electricity through his body to kill him. (The evil dude didn't wet the sponge because he wanted the man to suffer more.)
      Generally speaking, I think that gas chambers and lethal injections were invented because the success rate is nearly 100%, compared to hanging, firing squad, and electricity.

This was famously proven to have been due to jiggery-pokery by inmates who had been detailed to repair the gallows. Interestingly, Lee when he was released became a model citzen after he emmigrated to the USA.

    What about the guy I heard about who requested a simple peanut butter sandwich? It turned out he had a sever nut allergy, and he died as a result. Apparently he did this so he could die on his own terms? I'm really curious why you didn't mention this at all.

      Because it completely sounds like an urban legend?

    This is a bit in the macabre but sure. Split Pea Soup, Red Velvet Cake, Yankee Pot Roast (the way mom made) with Rice and a side of Mayonnaise mixed with Cranberry Sauce, Coca-Cola, and Pumpkin Pie with whipped cream.

    I think I'd opt to go down fighting than being executed. Seeing as I'll never do anything that would justify execution, my scheduled execution would be an unjust one, and my death while resisting an unjust execution would be an honorable death. If there's an afterlife, such a death and the life I've lived would surely get me into heaven. I'd also gett a pretty good laugh if it turns out Valhalla is real, and I end up there having died honorably in battle with my enemy, lol! And if there's no afterlife, well, I'll be remembered as that one badass prisoner who never gave up the good fight.

      You'd be disarmed and surrounded by armed guards, all you'd manage to do is get yourself knocked out and still executed.

    May 22,2020 when I watched this. It was funny to hear Simon talking about it being early in the year and do something worth while. Yeah, that was a bust.

    What luck, I work in corrections and it’s my job to provide everyone’s last meal, I’ve been looking for an online skill sharing site where I could learn to improve lily cooking abilities... maybe give it a Cajun flair?
    Although I guess it doesn’t really matter anyway, it’s not like I ever hear them complaint afterwards...

      I mean, if your cooking's bad enough that dead before the executioner gets to them, you _might_ want to look into the Skillshare thing anyways.
