Most excellent video Sir!!! Makes me wonder if the heads just told them to wrap things up quickly on the game, so they could use the team to help develop more 16 bit stuff.
You can really tell it's the Shining/Feda/Alundra/Landstalker guy Tamaki from that nice signature artwork. Guy does draw a good wolfman too, I swear they're in every game he was involved with
Gotta love those wolf characters though. Always badass and screamed "fantasy RPG" when they are on the team. Gerhalt from SF2 was always an awesome addition!
I appreciate your attention to detail when filming boxes, manuals, and other physical media related to the games you cover, love that little "Now! Let's play ENIX!!" picture on the disk cases
Still quite fascinating how Yoshitaka Tamaki (Shining Force, Alundra) got his start doing the promo art for this game. It's so underrated even among Japanese players/PC enthusiasts from that era, probably because of the very late non-Koei/-Falcom PC-88 release. I hesitate to deem many of these games truly forgotten, but this would be a good candidate.
It's a shame there are so many of these classic JRPGs that are more or less consigned to the dust bins of history due to the incredibly low likelihood anyone will ever bring them forward. Makes me wish I had the money to start a little studio to just, like, do simple updates to so many of these and english translations, maybe for release in a budget combo pack on a modern platform. Then again, with the way Squeenix's business model is working nowadays, it's probably highly doubtful they'd be willing to license even such old and ignored IPs for that kind of thing.
I dunno; that business model has already involved selling off some IPs that they don't want to bother with anymore for what is, frankly, peanuts. I bet if Night Dive or somebody made an offer, they'd gladly part with this stuff outright.
> Mentions a race of wolf-people who are endangered as a big part of the plot > Never have one as a party member > Those cowards In all seriousness, it's cool to see an Enix JRPG that isn't Dragon Quest. I adore DQ, and it's cool to see Enix's roots outside of that franchise.
I love the idea of the master joining the crew instead of the student. And that bit where the master tricks the villain into revealing himself was great.
Excellent review as usual! What it always grind my gears in RPGs is how we always end up looking for the thing they used to defeat the evil lord. But if it was so important and crucial to defeat him, why the hell they always forget about it?
Always look forward to your PC-88/98 game retrospectives, such an interesting body of games that the majority of people in the west were none the wiser of for so long.
Wow just found your video out of thin air and it did not disappoint. You've earn yourself a sub! Thanks for the content that I've never would have known about
i randomly had this video recommended to me and i’m very happy it was; this was a very entertaining and funny exploration of a game i never would have known existed otherwise. great stuff!
I appreciate your way of looking at these old games in a way that doesn't denigrate them nor use them to complain about new RPGs. It's refreshing, modern RPGs and the unsung games of the older generation hold unique charms.
I came really close to complaining about new RPG's though, when I said that playing old RPG's is cathartic for me. New RPG's can just use up so much of one's time...
@@BasementBrothers I play a lot of new and old so I know that feeling, but I appreciate that you didn't let it distract from the game at hand and kept the video's tone positive. Personally I play a lot of new and old RPGs because they feel good at very different things nowadays.
Each day when i see another obscure game i never hear about is bright day and if have great music that is even brighter :D And this your controller setup was wild.
Yoshitaka Tamaki did more than just "design the monsters" in FANGS, he illustrated all the promotional artwork and in-manual art, designed the characters via his illustrations, he was the character and monster designer for Land Stalker, Shining and the Darkness, Shining Force 1, Shining Soul I & II, the GBA remake of Shining Force I, and designed the characters and monsters for Lady Stalker, Time Stalkers (Dream Cast), and character designer and lead illustrartor on ALUNDRA, and the super famicom strategy RPG FEDA.....
I'm surprised that the protagonist isn't a half-human half-wolfman. The opening makes a big deal about his parents meeting, but never tells us why we should care... which is why I just skipped over it in the video. It would make too much sense if one of his parents was human and the other a wolfperson. Also, yeah. They could have had him transform into a wolf during battle... or have super keen sense of scent and hearing or something. You're right. Total missed opportunity.
Found your channel recently and loving your videos. I'm having a fantastic time with the Legend of Heroes and Ys videos. The controller bit in this one was great. So fascinating!!
I completed Ys Seven a couple of days ago and it sure made me nostalgic for the early games in the series where bosses just attacked you without a lengthy intro. I'll gladly take a "Bwahaha! You won't stand a chance!" right now
Good on you for managing that Houdini hookup for the keyboard-to-controller setup. It always feels good to overcome issues like that :p Keep up the great work!
Amazing stuff as always, thanks for providing a rare glimpse at the actual package and physical piece of software, first time I see some of this early Tamaki stuff.
I'll be watching this later and I'm fairly certain I'll greatly enjoy it based on prior experience. So have a pre-like and a comment for algorithmic purposes.
All I’m gonna say is that this makes me feel blessed that all of my nostalgia is linked to home console games that are easily available for free through emulators… this sounds exhausting!
It's crazy to think about how much quality content is out there, completely untapped & inaccessible by Western fans. Most of that stuff will likely never get translated, thus our only hope to be able to play these games one day will be that Google Translate actually becomes competent.
It is quite ironic that this is supposed to be one of your party members cheering you on. At first I thought the first two characters were "Evil Lord" and "Mid-boss Rival". Nice twist of expectations, I guess.
Pretty neat concepts in the game with the music that damages youand the portal that removes your ally. The spells and items really come in handy to stope them. Not sure if they exist in other games.
Great review. Owned and played the game on 2011/2012 on original hardware. Understand japanese but never got really into it. Only musics were the main motivation. I did probably 3/4 boss. Too much grinding also, but this is to be expected with an Enix Jrpg of the time. Nice to see finally a review on this game. One of the last game of the system with Popful Mail.
I'm not sure whether it's literally just a difference in plug size or not. The pin layout - or even the entire method it uses to send key presses for that matter - might be completely different for all I know. Might require a more complicated adapter like the USB ones I show in the video.

The boss for the second fang - with the wings and scorpion tail - seems to be a manticore, a mythical man-eating beast.

The music reminds me of sefa master system. With the expansion Yamaha sound card.
Ah, yes, have this one in the someday-backlog pile
pretty neat adding reference to that double dragon movie. wonder if there's further to elaborate the references and whys... :D
The characters in the game were raised by a wolf man, so Enix decided to name them after characters from Roman mythology who were raised by wolves.
