I think it’s such a shame so many historic cities were destroyed in wars. Karakorum, Pella, Babylon, Carthage… would have been incredible to be able to walk the streets of these cities and experience a place steeped in so much history.

In reality its likely that if these ancient cities remained, they wouldn't have been destroyed, although its very likely they would eventually be conqured or assimilated depending on the invader or social and political issues of the time.
