Arches NP was my first full-time job and how I kickstarted my NPS career as an Interpretive Park Ranger. Worked near Rattlesnake Arches at Colorado NM in 2014-2015. I miss living in Grand Junction. Such an awesome town.
I was waiting for one of you to say that the arch in the tower was shaped like Africa. At 5:17 it looked like a key hole. I'm only at 11:55-12:05 now & I already know this is my favorite part. There is nothing as amazing as ear ringing quiet in all that vastness. Great place & awesome video.
@@SUVRVing If you would've set the camera on a tripod at the 12:00 min mark for 20 mins staring out at the beauty of silence, no movement or talking I would totally watch that. If you ever take requests that would be mine, I need my fix. Really great video & I plan on rewatching this one.

We love Rattlesnake Arches. We included the hike in 2nd edition of our book The Hiker's Guide to Colorado in 1991 as part of a much longer hike out through Pollock Canyon. I have a funny story about the last arch (#9) from just a few years ago. We are much older and a bit rounder than when we did our first hiking guide in 1984 and in our other trips to Rattlesnake Arches. Anyway, we hiked the loop that you described, but when we got to the last arch to climb up and out, but we could not make it up that spot where those foot holds have been carved (they were not there then - must be very recent). The more we tried and failed, the more tired we got, until we were totally exhausted. It was the end of the day and there were no other hikers around to help. We sat down to rest and to contemplate going all the way back via the loop, most of it in the dark, when we heard some voices. A young couple appeared and immediately started scrambling up to the point where we had given up and were sitting. It was Jason , the son of my wife's cousin (so a cousin) and his fiance Kristin. Jason had grown up in Mesa, CO but had moved to Nevada. He just happened to be back visiting and we had not seen him in years. Anyway, Jayson scrambled up the steep spot like it was nothing, then helped us up. We felt pretty old, but appreciative of the help. What are the chances of meeting someone you know in a wilderness area at the precise moment when you needed their help? For those, like us, no longer so fond of scrambling, there are a couple of alternatives to the hike described in the video. One is to go in the opposite direction using the butt slide technique to get down through the arch (or in and out the same way as contemplated by the end-of-trail sign). And the other, much shorter and easier hike, is to stay on the top of the plateau and look down on the arches from above. Their are side trails along the rim and an old jeep trail along the ridgetop that is easiest to follow on the return.
Thank-you! Went to Arches, Canyonlands, Goblin Valley, Dead Horse SP, Bridal Veil Falls and Watache Forest in October. Loved them all other than how crowded Arches was. We went midweek. When we drove by it in the morning on the weekend- Monday the lines getting in were crazy.
Wow!!! All those years in Colorado and I never heard of this place. It's definitely on the list now, my RV won't get very far down the road but my dirt bike will get me to the trailhead. Fruita is known more for it's growing mountain biking popularity so it's not surprising that there wasn't many people around.

Park with the tank facing south and get some mylar window shades and put them behind it to reflect light and warm the back side. That'll give you warm water even on pretty cool days.

Saw your video on Sand Dunes because we were considering a visit. We’re based in Montrose so have explored many of the Colorado and Utah adventures. As you step back in filming the window arch formation resembles a ram or lamb’s head in the rock above as I perceive the outline of a head, nose and an eye.
So I found this just looking around on Google maps before this video and put it on my itinerary. There is another way to get to the arches from the NE side but its a 14.5 mile hike! My dad actually lived in that little town of Glade Park.
I've studied that area on maps and Google Earth, but never got into it or realized how special it was...Really enjoyed the video, easy to track on Google Earth.

I used your coordinates to find campsites on La Sal mountain loop rd in Moab, Canyon Rim National recreation area (favorite of the trip!), Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument, a campsite just west of Zion, and a campsite at Grand Canyon. Dude you saved me so much money!! And wow the feeling of safety and solitude at those campsites was superb!! You do an awesome service for people!! I was able to explore around the campsites some as well. Thanks so much!
We bought a camper van earlier this year and our maiden voyage was out west (mainly in the Utah area), your videos helped prepare us and got us VERY excited about our new adventures! This is a beautiful hike, have to add it to our next trip!

I was curious about the fascination we seem to have with arches and found this: "The arch can be construed as the vault of the SKY. Various cultures link the arch to victory; Rome and France (L'arc de Triomphe) being two of the most prominent. Passing through an arch is the symbolic act of rebirth, of leaving the old behind and entering the new. They often mark access into holy places."
Great job on this video. I visited Rattlesnake Canyon several years ago, but stayed on the rim due to limited hiking ability. Still, it was fun walking on top of the arches looking down. No video, just still photos. MacInnes Canyons also has good rock art. I think it, together with Colorado National Monument, is worthy of NP status.
Ha! A First! I actually visited there in Sept. Moab route out to Tahoe. (Imperial CA now for Thanksgiving) . I turned around at that posted sign. And like Dennis I backed away when I considered decent. 66 yrs of age and Solo... No camera can record the scale or beauty. I lost count how many times I've lost/caught my breath ... It was real nice to have Dennis in video! You do change it up and that's enjoyable! My Envoy didn't bottom out at all so I guess I did a good job building suspension. My Heart had a few Events...
I have heard of this area and would love to check it out. What a great video! I especially liked your snack break at Trap Arch; it"s always great to just sit awhile and soak it all in. Meeting the artist was very cool as well. I just finished a painting of an old 🚗 car (1952 Hudson) along the Going to the Sun road in Glacier NP so I appreciated a view of the painting. Question: I am 73 and in pretty good shape. Do you think the hike is doable? I probably would skip the rock scrambling. Let me know your take on the difficulty...Thanks for another terrific adventure!
My husband and I did this hike several years ago. We’re a few years younger than you; definitely doable without the scrambling. It was a very nice hike. As you saw in the video, there’s not much shade so keep that in mind based on the time of year you go. Have fun and enjoy!
Thanks for another nice video. I always enjoy watching you explore new places and explaining them. If you ever get east of the Mississippi, you should check out Red River Gorge State Park Kentucky. There is over 100 arches and I believe, 14 that you can drive to within a half mile hike. It's a beautiful place. Took the kids there 20 some years ago. My favorite was whistler's Arch, it's a small one but it's like standing in front of an air conditioner, The way the warm air rises up and funnels through it like a Venturi.

No video, just still photos. MacInnes Canyons also has good rock art. I think it, together with Colorado National Monument, is worthy of NP status.
I'd definitely like to go back to see the rock art and some of the other sights there. I'm good with the area not being a NP. Keeps people away!

Ha! A First! I actually visited there in Sept. Moab route out to Tahoe. (Imperial CA now for Thanksgiving) . I turned around at that posted sign. And like Dennis I backed away when I considered decent. 66 yrs of age and Solo...

It's a bit of a bumpy ride to get out there, but you guys could definitely do it in the truck! It's worth the drive.

I have heard of this area and would love to check it out. What a great video! I especially liked your snack break at Trap Arch; it"s always great to just sit awhile and soak it all in. Meeting the artist was very cool as well. I just finished a painting of an old 🚗 car (1952 Hudson) along the Going to the Sun road in Glacier NP so I appreciated a view of the painting. Question: I am 73 and in pretty good shape. Do you think the hike is doable? I probably would skip the rock scrambling. Let me know your take on the difficulty...Thanks for another terrific adventure!
My husband and I did this hike several years ago. We’re a few years younger than you; definitely doable without the scrambling. It was a very nice hike. As you saw in the video, there’s not much shade so keep that in mind based on the time of year you go. Have fun and enjoy!
Yep, I think the hike is doable if your general mobility is good. My parents are your age, and they would be able to do the hike on a cool day.
Thanks for another nice video. I always enjoy watching you explore new places and explaining them. If you ever get east of the Mississippi, you should check out Red River Gorge State Park Kentucky. There is over 100 arches and I believe, 14 that you can drive to within a half mile hike. It's a beautiful place. Took the kids there 20 some years ago. My favorite was whistler's Arch, it's a small one but it's like standing in front of an air conditioner, The way the warm air rises up and funnels through it like a Venturi.
