  • These Balance scales where found in the same place as the Beatrice stove
    and if you look carefully in the opening scene of that film you can see a
    quick glimpse of it on the Wheelie Bin, I'm not sure of the manufacturing
    date but I would guess around 1960 ish due to the shape of the body.
    It has been a relatively straight forward restoration compared to some
    of my other projects but it has been good fun to do.
    I chose to paint it Black instead of the white as I thought it would look
    better, especially with the Hammered look. Let me know what you think
    in the comment below. Thanks for Watching.

    Nice job restoring scale.. Although to get it working perfectly you should have put a bit of emery paper on the knives and if it had bearings buff out the cuts.. Getting on of these to balance perfectly is a art.. If you wondering I was taught and fixed many many of these before electronic scales even existed

    Very cool. Just found the exact same scale at a thrift store. Missing weights. Unfortunately someone has painted over the original yellow paint with bright red. Plans are to try and remove the red paint with mild stripper...if not successful then strip to bare metal, coat with Spar poly and use as a planter for my deck. Cheers.

    This is the first scale restoration vid iv seen where its put to the test afterwards, really nice work. I didn't see a point to view the balance like a needle or a set of lines, I think it may be missing a piece or something!?! One can't really tell it's truly balanced just by looking at the side of the scale!?!?

  • @wireworks616
    @wireworks616 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great restore, but the plate that you put the weight on is on the wrong side. Try mounting it on the other side. Then balance it without anything on it. Then place the 1lb. weight on it and weigh out what you like on the other sid e.

    I really like your restoration videos. There is only one thing I would like to point out on this restoration. It seems like the Hammerite paint is too thick. Maybe thin it out and paint two layers using a softer brush. Black colour is not that forgiven.

    • @UniqueRestorations
      @UniqueRestorations  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I totally agree with you, I cant say i was happy with the finished result on this one. The brush wasnt right and i struggled with the heat drying the paint skin too quickly which led to more lines as i tried to smooth it out. regards Brian

    Nice work on the weighing scale and while I applaud your use of paint by brush for the work it does seem to lack the fine texture of sprayed surfaces. Also where did the weights come from I didn't see them in the beginning. Finally the missing weight pan was a bit of a downer. Overall I am pleased with your work and always look forward to your next video.

      Hi Paul, I am expecting a few comments on the paint this time and to be honest its not great. The brush wasnt soft enough to achieve a better result. I managed to find some weights at a reclamation yard last saturday, I only picked them up as i thought it would look better with them by the scales. Thanks for your comment Regards Brian

      @@markjeffels3327 I honestly don't know what might be there. He buys like entire garage fulls at a time, he probably don't know either. He has a lady that tries to help keep it going, but the piles are often over her head. I've found military hats, very old Stetsons, and that's just on the top of the heap. The heavy metal stuff is on the bottom, mostly covered up with other junk.

    keep your eyes open for a copper or brass bowl when you're looking for more stuff. The bowl would have been brass or copper if this was meant for food weighing. if not, it could have been a steel bowl that is oblong with a kind of pour spout on one end.

    • @francislematt7079
      @francislematt7079 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      "domestic" was indeed meant "kitchen" rather than just "home". The original ivory colour could have been chosen to keep the domestic servants happy instead of that hammerite industrial gun metal tone!

    • @tootall5559
      @tootall5559 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@francislematt7079 yeah, I wasn't in love with that either. So would domestic mean food use or something else, or does it simply mean that that scale isn't for use in trade? Most later scales say something to the effect of not for trade use. Actually, when he had it all clean and shiny, I was hoping for a clear coat and leave it go at that. Polished metal always looks good to me. I have a hunch the hammered metal paint was used because it was at hand, no other reason, since he's used it quite effectively before... some things look good in it. A warrior uses what weapons are at hand, there is no shame in this.

      @MusicFurler 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tootall5559 Domestic use only would have meant home use only, not for shops as weights and measures ruling would mean traders have had use precise scales and would be larger too. And most cases a display gauge facing to the shopkeeper and costumer.

    I’m sorry you set them wrong. They should have a tin/brass pan on the product side and your zero is with that pan on. You included the weight of the plastic bowl in the weight making the weight of the rice short.
    Another good restoration though with limited resources.

    • @UniqueRestorations
      @UniqueRestorations  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mark I thought i had used the plastic bowl with a little rice in it to duplicate what the missing bowl would weigh, then calibrated it. Then i added 1lb of rice on top of that to measure it against the metal weight. Is that not right.? Thanks for your Comment Mark. regards Brian

    • @markharris5771

      Unique Restorations It would be better to watch out for a proper pan then calibrate it for a straight arm. There was at least one in that room you might be able to convince the store holder to sell. I’m sure you’re going to be a regular customer. However, very few recipes require that level of accuracy, when I was a chef we used scales most for weighing steaks etc as we cut them.
      You are doing a great job, and it brightens my day when you post.
