Die Hard 2: Die Harder is also a Christmas Movie, taking place on Christmas Eve. Die Hard with a Vengeance, Live Free or Die Hard, and A Good Day to Die Hard don't take place around Christmas but are still fun to watch. Bruce Willis has retired from acting so there won't be a sixth film in this series unfortunately. Enjoy the ride.

Hans Gruber's last moment is indeed one of the greatest cinema villain deaths of all time. It's the ONLY time in the film we see fear in Gruber's eyes, which was achieved by dropping Alan Rickman 40 feet for real, 2 seconds earlier than they told him they would. 😅

When I grew up in the 1970s, we had to deal with things like "Rudolf, the Red Nosed Reindeer" and "Frosty the Snow Man", and "How the Grinch Stole Christmas." And "A Christmas Carol" and Henson's "Emmet Otter's Jug Band Christmas." This was the first unambigiously Christmas movie I ever saw that ever Christmased. And it was released in mid July, too. I mean just from the amount of explosions it has got to be the best Christmas movie ever, if you look at most of the other Christmas movies, almost nothing explodes. But in this Christmas movie, a whole ton of things explode.

Inna at 35:02 -- "I thought it would only make like a teeny tiny small explosion, not that!"
Take another look at what happens when John drops his homemade bomb down the elevator shaft. You'll see that there is an initial explosion, followed momentarily by several large secondary explosions.
The criminals were shooting at the LAPD's armored car with missiles that they'd brought into the building in crates. In their rush to shoot at the armored car, the criminals had carelessly dropped one missile next to the elevator and left other open missile crates nearby. The explosion of John's bomb in the elevator shaft detonated the dropped missile lying next to the elevator, and the explosion of that missile set off other missiles in the open crates. The result was a chain-reaction of exploding missiles.

There shouldn't be a debate about it at all. This is 100% a Christmas movie. It takes place on Christmas Eve, the entire reason John is at the tower is to attend a Christmas party at his estranged wife's office, and there are numerous Christmas elements and songs in the movie. That's more than enough to qualify it as a Christmas movie. That said, this was Alan Rickman's first major movie role and he absolutely KILLED it! Part of the charm of Die Hard is the clash between New York culture and California culture, it shows up in most scenes and US audiences pick up on it a lot. For example, sunny palm trees for Christmas contrasts with grit and snow in New York, down to the way John McClane talks to other cops.

Next time someone thinks it isn't a Christmas movie, ask them to explain what they think defines a Christmas movie. It's obviously _highly_ subjective, but chances are they'll list off a bunch of things that Die Hard actually does provide (themes of family and friendship, finding yourself/courage/love, redemption, Christmas music, gifts, etc). If they mention snow or ice-based activities, point out that most of the Northern Hemisphere is without snow on Christmas while, in the entirety of the Southern Hemisphere, Christmas is during Summer. If, on the other hand, they can't define what it means to them for something to be a Christmas movie, then does it even make sense to use such a term?

    Welcome to the party, Pal!
C4: A little dab will do ya!
When I first saw the Coke joke in the theater, I laughed (to the dismay of my neighbors). That's where Ellis went to see Hans, and to his dismay was given a soft drink. I had to explain it to my friends later.
I'm pretty sure there's a joke in that the mainframe computer was made by Control Data Corporation. CDC was on the rocks at the time, so the producers probably decorated the set using authentic but cheap surplus equipment (or at least empty cabinets). Maybe it was symbolic of the terrorists controlling the narrative. Maybe shooting them up made a statement about that dying company.
The terror/surprise on Alan Rickman's face as he started to fall was real. Doing his own stunt, he was suspended on a rope. There was to be a countdown before releasing him. The countdown was skipped, and he fell before he was ready. This was his first film, and he commanded instant respect in Hollywood. BTW, the sermon scene at the party got a "wow" from the audience in the theater.
The director was John McTiernan, who directed "Predator" right before this, "The Hunt for Red October" right after, and later the second "Die Hard" sequel. Jan de Bont was the cinematographer; he also did "The Hunt for Red October" before going on to direct "Speed" and "Twister". All of these get a recommendation.
Bruce Willis accepted the part of John McClane after at least 13 other popular actors turned down the role, including Frank Sinatra. It's hard to imagine anyone matching Bruce' performance in this.
When Holly asked John where he was staying, John said he'd stay with his friend in Ramona. Holly laughed and corrected him, saying Pomona. Well, Ramona is a real place, east of San Diego. I'm pretty sure there's a joke in there. This is the third such fun ambiguity I spotted just in the first half of the movie, and I have to wonder how many more are buried in there.
Alexander Godunov played Karl, the long-haired blond terrorist. He was a Russian dancer who defected to the USA during the cold war. He studied ballet with Mikhail Baryshnikov.

Hello Inna!😊 I am a little late for this one. Trying to get rid of the flu.😉 It is the holidays, and the building is empty except for a Christmas party on one floor. That is why security is light. This is also why the bad guys probably chose this time to seize the building. The first three Die Hard films are the best, and worth reacting to when you get a chance. Great reactions to this great action film for the holidays, Inna!!!!🎬👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

7:05 It's California. They don't knock. You may also notice that she doesn't say, "Goodbye" to Paulina. She just hangs up the phone.
19:57 Yes. She is indeed, stupid. That was one of the qualifications to be a 911 phone operator in California in the 80s. See: Public Enemy - "911 is a Joke"
25:59 DO NOT shoot in the air! This is Los Angeles! The bullets WILL come down somewhere within the city.
28:30 Yes, C4 is an explosive colloquially known as "plastic explosive."
31:50 It's giving me a little bit of anxiety... hold on I'm going to go get some COFFEE (aka anxiety enhancer!). WTF girl?!
32:10 The MOST realistic moment in movie history besides the two Stormtroopers thinking that it's just a drill and talking about "cars."
35:17 Yes, that IS the priority. "If it bleeds, it leads" is the news axiom. These kinds of "reporters" call THEMSELVES "vultures." The 2024 movie "Civil War" was about these kinds of reporters.

When he meets his demise, Hans is dropped from one of the top floors of Nakatomi (actually the Fox building in Century City, California). It took a day of filming, but Rickman did the stunt himself.
However, it turns out, he was tricked.
Rickman was held with a rope by a team and was told that he would be released on the count of three to fall 40 feet onto a crash pad, Charlie Picerni, the film’s stunt coordinator, explained on Netflix’s The Movies That Made Us.
“But I told the stunt guys, let him go on one,” Picerni added.
The fear and shock seen on Hans’ face was the real deal, which is what Picerni wanted.
Rickman would later say he didn’t recall the countdown, but he remembered the reaction to him doing the stunt.
“I look at the sight of some slightly incredulous producers when I said I would do it myself,” Rickman explained to an audience once. “They were very careful to make it my very last shot on the film.”

Die Hard is a Christmas Movie!!!...... Spoiler Alert: Only Die Hard 1&2 happen at Christmas....... So can watch the others at any time....
The Script is based on the 1979 novel, NOTHING LASTS FOREVER, which was a sequel to THE DETECTIVE, which starred Frank Sinatra in 1968.
    This Movie has some Firsts:
    - First Action Movie role for Bruce Willis, before this he played on a TV Comedy called "Moolighting"
    - First Hollywood Movie Role for Alan Rickman, He was nervous about playing a villian in his first movie being the villian, He almost turned down the role... Other Early Alan Movies "Quigley Down Under," "January Man," "Robin Hood: Prince of Theives".....
Line up of actors seen in other projects:
    - Bonnie Bedelia (Holly Gennero/McLane) Played the lead in "Heart Like a Wheel" the Shirley Muldowney Story,
    - Reginald VelJohnson (Sgt Powell) later played the father on TV show "Family Matters"
    - Clarance Gilyard (Theo the Hacker) Prior he had played "Merlin" in "Top Gun" 1986, And after Played Ranger JJ Trivette on TV's "Walker Texas Ranger" with Chuck Norris,
    - Alexander Godunov (Karl) Played a composer in "The Money Pit" with Tom Hanks & Shelley Long, and an Amish Person in "Witness"
    - Paul Gleason (Assist Chief of Police Robinson), was the Assistant Principal in "The Breakfast Club"
    - William Atherton (News reporter Thornton) Played the "EPA Inspector" that turned off the Ghost Containment Unit in "Ghostbusters"
    - Robert Davi (FBI Agent Johnson (other one)) Played a Goon in Goonies, and other Parts,
    - Grand L Bush (FBI Agent Johnson) Played in Lethal Weapon 1 & 2
    - Mary Ellen Trainor (Blonde Newscaster) Played Physcologist in Lethal Weapon (1-4)
    Other Info/References:
    - Phrases "Yippie Ki Yi Ya" and "Happy Trails" come from songs Roy Rogers sang in his Movies/TV Show.....
    - For the "Drop scene" they told Alan they were gonna drop him (he was in a safety harness) on a counted number (I've heard both 3 & 5) and they dropped him early to get the shear panic reaction.....
    - I heard, the "Bill Clay" scene was added after they started shooting and found out how good Alan was with mimiciking accents.....
    - Not hearing the sound of gunfire - 30 stories at 10 feet a story would be 300 feet in the air then add in the contruction Materials to deaden the sound....
    - Not seeing the gunfire on roof of building, Building that tall have strobes and marker lights on the Roof, so aircraft don't run into them.....

"Die Hard": Officer John McClane finds this song on the plane, flying from NYC to California: th-cam.com/video/wYHleFFhlFk/w-d-xo.html Bruce Willis' "John McClane" was very different from other 1980's Action movie heroes. He isn't a muscle-bound Rambo clone, rides in the FRONT of Argyle's limousine, has moments of Fear/Uncertainty/Introspection, takes damage, and is "dead man walking" by the last quarter of the movie. These character traits attract men and women. Yep, you could say that I liked "John McClane" from the start.;) Who is this "Snape"? When I see Alan Rickman, I see "Hans Gruber." Memes: "Christmas doesn't begin until Hans Gruber falls off the Nakatomi Plaza building." For "Firefly" fans: Every time a TH-cam viewer falls in love with "Firefly," a Fox TV executive falls off the Nakatomi Plaza building. Cultural: Gene Belcher of "Bob's Burgers": Why is no one singing? Why is no one dancing? Die Hard: The Musical!

Hi Inna, my family gathers together during the holidays and watches favorite classics like It’s A Wonderful Life and every version of A Christmas Carol. Die Hard ranks high up there as a Christmas favorite. It has the classic Christmas tale of an estranged father trying to reconnect with the wife and kids. But Scrooge with an army of Grinch try to ruin Christmas. Love, family and friendship prevail. Welcome to the family, Inna. Merry Christmas.

The Die Hard as a Christmas movie debate was not a thing until the last 10 or 15 years. It is really weird, nobody *ever* sold Die Hard as a Christmas movie, it was released in JULY of 1988. It was a summer blockbuster and nobody ever thought of it as anything other than an action movie that happens to be set during Christmas time. Same goes for 1987's Lethal Weapon, it was released in MARCH and nobody thinks it's a Christmas movie even though it takes place during Christmas too.

    • @fightingidiocy7724
      @fightingidiocy7724 11 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      and
the "oh it's a Christmas move" started as joke on old IMDB message board..because of the Christmas music that was added late in production. In order to save money, the Studio filmed it at their home offices of Fox Plaza, in later November. By this time, Christmas decorations had already been put up in the building. They had no money or time to remove them, so they stayed. That's the only reason why people call this a Christmas movie. It's not:" Even the Bruce Willis, the Director, the original novelist, and Producers said "it's not a Christmas movie" But the most important reason: There's not a single mention of Christ, no cross, no crucifix , nothing, which a requirement for a Christ-mass movie. Because the it's a HOLY-day named after him.
If people want to celebrate Christmas, that fine, but please QUIT EXCLUDING CHRIST from our stuff.
