    Thanks for another great tutorial video. I could be wrong but I don't think you mentioned that you are going to check the conrods for bending which I think you would do with piston to valve touching. Cheers. Martin

      You are correct, I missed mentioning that check. I really need to start writing some form of script to ensure I cover everything off. Will update in the next video 👍😎

    Great video, very informative. My engine has just seized. I was running the 848 on the road and started to hear a tapping noise, I slowed down quickly just before the engine died. I clutched in and ran to a stop. Obviously from that very limited info it's hard to diagnose but at a best guess what do you think has failed ? You don't by any chance live in or near Kent? I think I'm going to strip out the engine myself but would be happy to pay for some video or telephone advice if needed? All the best Josh

    Job well done Sir.. love the vids!!
    the rusty stud is something I found in multiple (horizontal) cylinders over the years..
    they can be a real pain disassembling the engine..

      Yeah they are a common issue, must be bikes that are only used wet as its not on every engine.

    good evening. I can’t find the class letter of the plain bearing on the crankshaft in my 848, there is B on the connecting rod and there is nothing on the shaft.

    • @DesmoWerx
      @DesmoWerx  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It sometimes can fade over time but if you look at the webs in different light you can usually spot the lettering. Otherwise you will need to experiment with measurements and shell sizes to get the correct clearance.

    Could you let me know where you get your parts from. Thinking of stripping my 996 bp engine down over the summer. Not sure as it is a 1999 if it is going to have the flaked rocker arms. Will definitely need a gasket set. Apparently it takes about 20 mins to check them, have you done an easy access video to check the rocker Arms?

    • @DesmoWerx
      @DesmoWerx  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Darrell, I get them from various sources to get the best price at the time. A 99 bike should be okay for the rockers as it was the earlier bikes that were the most troublesome, as long as its been looked after your should find standard wear. you will need to remove the belts and then cams.
      I will add it to my list of videos to make.

    Had a similar episode with my 1098S (07) currently at the cam timing stage; seized intake cam on the vertical due to oil starvation (on a previous failure I found sealer plugging the oil feed hole in the cylinder, changed the head, seized it again) Now I took everything apart, found nothing clogging nothing, everything is ok roughly the same as what you just showed; now I replaced the oil pump assembly since this time there was not a lot of oil inside the oil filter (remember, its an oil starvation problem). Anything you might point me to besides prayer? edit: oddly enopugh, the exh cam has no oil starvation marks, only the intake cam was the slightest stuck and only on 1 side

    • @DesmoWerx
      @DesmoWerx  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you have the manual? there is a process for checking the dimensions of the oil pump to see if it is not building pressure correctly. The oil pump also has an oil pressure relief which can seize open slightly if debris gets into it.
      The other think to check is the cylinders have an oil feed to the head, check this is clear with some decent gauge wire. Hope that helps. 😊

      @@DesmoWerx Had the cylinder and head off as well as the oil pump; changed the head and oil pump assembly, did a few static tests to see if a cam would run hotter (bring to op temp on stand) and after 3 tests I went for a road test and stopped along the way to check heads temps with a touchless thermo and all seems fine all 4 cams run the same temp (with a margin)

    • @DesmoWerx
      @DesmoWerx  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Neil, Either a belt jump of the engine was overrevved bending the inlet valves and jamming them in place in their guides.

    • @DesmoWerx
      @DesmoWerx  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      HI Aaron, the belt slipped on the vertical cylinder causing valves to come into contact with the piston and bend this locked the head and engine. Luckily the previous owner did not try and restart the bike, he just removed the heads and found the problem. Rather than rebuild the engine he sold it to the chap I am doing the work for and bought a replacement.

    What was your conclusion as to what may have caused it to nip up?

    • @DesmoWerx
      @DesmoWerx  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The belt jumped causing the valves to come into contact with the vertical piston. May be due to the belt tension being loose or overrevving the bike. I don't have the original head available but when I inspected it the intake vales were bent and stuck protruding which locked the engine up. Luckily no cylinder related seizure.

      @@DesmoWerx I have a 916 so it's good to know possible issues. Amazing to see there was such little marking on the piston! I recently replaced the belt and did my 900SS while I was at it. Any tips for getting the correct tension without the Ducati tool? Thanks for sharing and hopefully saving people money with preventative maintenance!
