  • How radiator valves work and how to set them. TRV's or Thermostatic Radiator Valves have numbers on the sides that correlate to the temperature in the room...not the temperature in the radiator.       @@sorencoppard6386 Most can. Also, most can have limits set - so they can't be turned beyond a certain point - such as higher than 3 and lower than 1.

      @@millomweb My plumber didn't even put them on straight. I had to use a pen mark on the top to see when fully open / closed.

      You mean the indicator mark is round the back ?
      Unscrew the head and refit. Some heads will fit in any position others at 45° intervals.
      Just back off the head fitting screw enough to let the head freely rotate.
      Some heads can be dimantled so you can set limit pins to set your own min & max.

      Oi! You're not referring predominantly about women drivers are ya? You sexist, misogynistic, patriarchal oppressor! If you are, can I join your club. ;-) LOL!
      Even the most obstinate woman will still try and argue that you have got it all wrong. Even though you fitted the new boiler and removed the manipulative wheelhead valves for fitting trv's, they'll still ramp 'em up to max.
      Worse still, they will dial down the target temperature of the heating flow at the boiler, (on days when there's a 2 foot covering of snow outside) so that the heat exchanger gas modulates down or turns off entirely. The boiler will continue to cycle..on, off..on, off/ fire up-> modulate down-> go off-> fire up-> mod down- go off ad infinitum, which is not efficient at all. Then, with their next breath they'll boom, "turn that light off, we're not made of bloody money!" Like some modern day version of Air Raid Warden Hodges from Dad's Army, but with female logic, on speed and with pre-menstrual tension.

      Learning to use indicators will help *pedestrians* too.
      I am sick and tired of how many drivers only bother to use indicators when they see other cars on the road, when people crossing the road (and cyclists too) are looking not just for the presence of cars, but also looking at the indicators to know where they are going.
      Indicators aren't just there for other motor vehicles. *Always* use them.

    Love this video! can you now do one explaining how this correlates to the thermostats and main heating controls. Like if i have the digital thingy set to 28 degrees but the TRV's set to '3'. Then which component takes priority?

      The digital thermostat controls the overall heating. The TRV controls the heat input to the radiator. Since TRV 3 is probably less than 28deg, the heating will stay on until 28deg but the TRV will shut off that radiator before 28 deg. If the digital thermostat is at 10 deg and the TRV is at 5, approx 30deg, the heating will shut off at 10 deg even though the radiator valve will be open. THe TRV room will never reach 30 deg.

      @@eizabeth1692 Thanks for this reply Eizabeth, very useful to know. I understand that each TRV is waiting to allow hot water into the rad, based on the TRV setting. With this being the case does the boiler need to be permanently on, so delivering hot water around the system all the time, in case a TRV needs it. Where as a room thermostat will switch the boiler off when the stat senses the required temperature.

    even knowing how the valve works it's still awesome to see the valve work in action, watching the flow of water slow down till it stops as you are heating it up is very cool. love your videos, as i have just finished learning beside a plumber and now on my way to work solo, your videos are very useful.

    I've just moved from a freezing cold flat to a house that actually stays warm and was wondering why the radiators weren't heating up clearly the rooms are warm enough and don't need to be on.
    This is explained perfectly now I understand completely

    Hi. Nice demonstration. If all TRV in rooms have reached lets say desirable temp of 20 degrees, does it mean that boiler will shut off even if the room thermostat is set to.let's say 23 degrees?

    You missed the part where THEY DON'T FUCKING WORK. Useless devices made to save you money when in the end they fall apart after about a year and the plumber call-out to put the radiators back the way they were costs you more than the cost of living in a cold house for that year. They slow the heating of a room...working on a valve system, slowly closing as the room warms up...so obviously the room will get hotter slower with these things fitted...and this is the reason why people shove them up to 11 whenever the person who paid to fit them leaves the room.

    It frustrates the hell out of me that folk turn them up full to heat the room 'faster'.
    Think about it, these valves are so near the hot radiator! Best idea, mount them HORIZONTALLY. If they are vertical I put pipe insulation on the pipe underneath. I also put some insulation between the valve head and the radiator.

    digital ones need 1 minute, only the most expensive analogue danfoss 10 minutes, otherwise 20 minutes

    Could do with a follow-up video on TRVs in conjunction with a room thermostat, best placement for a Nest, etc. For instance, my Nest is in my living room which has two big rads and warms up quickly, but my bedroom is usually too cold. When the heating's on, the temp goes up to the Nest setting and shuts off, but the bedroom hasn't warmed up yet, and the air brick cools it down too quickly. So, do I whack up the temperature on the Nest and tweak down the living room TRVs to give the bedrooms a chance? Do I move the Nest? If I put it in the bedroom, the motion sensor will think I'm out all day and put the heating on eco! Confused...

    I've leant a lot from this. I'm still a bit unsure about how these TRV's work alongside the main thermostat control. I always keep my thermostat as low as possible to try and save money, and when it reaches the temp the whole system goes off. So, why do you need TRV's? unless you want different temperatures in different rooms. Why does it matter if all TVR's are set to 5, if they'll all switch off when the main thermostat reaches the set temp?

    A lot of people get suckered into "smart TRV's" not realising that the TRV's they already have will do the same job. 95% of people just want their radiators to shut off at a set temperature. If that's you, don't buy a smart TRV!

      Yeah and they buy HIVE smart trvs at £50 each almost, per radiator, which can be done manually with your current radiator dial. Set it and forget it.

    30°C ?? Who the hell would heat a room into that temperature ? It's already a nightmare in summer when having 30°C in a room let not speak in winter. I always knew how it works and despite saying it to my office coworkers they keep on pushing all the radiators at the maximum level. A true nightmare.

    Your Videos have been invaluable, and gave me the confidence to do some necessary housekeeping on my system. I have found a few tricks, that if you think are sensible to make videos on, would be appreciated: Tip/Vid 1: To find the last RAD, (Which you will drain from), open all Lock Sheer valves and TRV's fully, including downstairs, heat the system up for a 1 hour or so, and the last Rad should be cold. I found this out btw after I had done my work, but doing it before will help I think. I labeled it "Last Rad". Tip/Vid 2: When replacing a 3 port valve, always set the old valve you are replacing to "M" this will make sure you take the top water from the cylinder out of the system when you drain. Use some LS-X silicone around the original olive when replacing, I left it 12 hours to cure , so wrap up warm! and so far...after refilling (touch wood) no leaks. Tip/Vid 3: After you have refilled the system, and you have bleed from downstairs to up, worth advising if you are cleansing the system first before inhibiting, is to close the last RAD valve before refilling contrary to your advice , then follow the bleed process.... that way you don't loose the cleaner. It meant more bleeding, but I'm confident it's in the system for a few weeks before I do the whole process again to then add inhibitor. Lastly add to that, keep the ball cock open in the header tank, as if that drops significantly whilst your bleeding air, you will suck more air in, I heard it filling all the time, but was paranoid about the level going too low. Anyway thanks again for your vids.... they are amazing and will subscribe...I'm no plumber!! but there is NO WAY I would of done this task with out your great vids !!!..

    But if you have your heating set to manual, and have set your favourite temperature on your zone controllers, the TRVs should all be left fully open, right?

      No. TRVs should be either set to max preferred temp or preferred temp. That way you control the room temperature with the TRV as this will control individual rads. If you have single rad zone and electric thermostat, don't fit TRVs.

    So am I right in saying that if you walk into a room and the room is hot and the radiator is still hot, that means you should turn the TRV down? Also, how do these TRV,s work in conjunction with the wall thermostat in the hallway?? If the wall thermostat in the hallway is set to say 21 degrees but the rooms are still cold, do the TRV,s on the radiators over ride the wall thermostat in the hallway and keep the boiler running until the rooms are warm?? This is what’s really confusing me 🤔

      Answer to question 1 - yes, turn it down if the room is too hot for you and the radiator is still on. But just turn it down a notch or two.
      Question 2 - the room with the thermostat should not have TRVs in it. Although this is slowly going to go out of date with the more widespread use of Tado rad valves etc.

    Do you think having a sofa up against the radiator (and in turn the trv) would stop a trv from being able to accurately gauge the ambient temperature?

      You need to understand the room's air flow. If the trv's near a door letting cooler air in, the radiator will be hotter than it should be.

    Do TRV’s expire/become less effective with age? Just thinking the ones I have are about 20 years old. Are they also interchangeable or do you have to change the valve body as well as the head?

      Change both. They do wear out in the end they just won't turn off. Do try and make sure the trv head is fully screwed down though as that can cause it. Turn it to its highest setting and tighten it down.

      The reason they expire is the pin inside that pushs down and closes the valve sticks and stays pushed in as they get old,Best to change the whole thing (Complete valve top & bottom)

      They usually creep warmer over the years but most can be internally adjusted to compensate. Stuck valves can be another problem - tends to happen where one has been screwed shut for a long time. Better to turn a rad off for unused rooms at the other end valve.
      If you're lucky, stuck valves can be freed without removal.

    The TRV is so close to the radiator that it can only controll the temperature of the radiator.
    To sense the room it would need to be a long way from the radiator.
    The tests done in this video just confirm that it does not sense the room but the temperature in its vicinity which is that of the radiator.

      So you know better than all the companies that design these things do you? They DO control the temperature in the room NOT the radiator despite where they are placed. If you actually had these on your radiators you would know that smart arse.

    I would have thought it better if the TRVs were projecting horizontally from the radiator. Then they could not be influenced by the convection current of the pipework below them. That would give a better representation of the room temperature.

    Excellent video. Acting was first class and the use of extras and props kept this audience member on his toes. The will he/won't he be able to borrow the heater had me on the edge of my seat. My only complaint was the speeding up of the 18 minutes, one of cinema's great losses.

      It stores in the expansion vessel in the boiler

    So why don't they just print temperature numbers ongo the TRVs instead of an arbitrary scale?
    EDIT: apparently it's because they cannot guarantee precise enough temps. OK, makes sense.

    Brilliant demo. But, you are wasting your time, women are retiles/snakes, got NO blood. My wife says she's cold, so I get a thermometer, place it on the settee where she is laid, guess what? 25 deg C. I'm boiling my balls off in the coolest chair in the room....give me strength!!!!     Great video as normal, but I do have one question/inquiry.
    While I understand how TRVs actually work, my question is more about the main thermostat itself.
    I only have one radiator in the property(bungalow) without a TRV fitted, this being the bathroom and I have a wireless thermostat.
    What is the best set up for this?
    I currently have the wireless thermostat set to 21c in what we'd say is the coldest/longest room to warm up(the main bedroom) with the TRV opened up to Max (5).
    All other rooms have the TRVs set to around 2 - 3 depending on rooms.
    Is this correct, if not what would be a better set up?
    Any help would be grateful

    Ok, so that's how they suppose to work, but what about all the very high heat coming from the radiator, and its base, pipe, everything sending heat to the trv EXCEPT THE ROOM

    water in my system is 90C. 4 my valves produce very loud noises, like someone hammering onto pipes. if little turn valve noise gone but return next day. do i need to replace valves?

    Use the range limiter pin in the TRV for wife proof heating. My TRV's now won't go above 20°C. 😏

      Worse still, they will dial down the target temperature of the heating flow at the boiler, (on days when there's a 2 foot covering of snow outside) so that the heat exchanger gas modulates down or turns off entirely. The boiler will continue to cycle..on, off..on, off/ fire up-> modulate down-> go off-> fire up-> mod down- go off ad infinitum, which is not efficient at all. Then, with their next breath they'll boom, "turn that light off, we're not made of bloody money!" Like some modern day version of Air Raid Warden Hodges from Dad's Army, but with female logic, on speed and with pre-menstrual tension.

    I'm guessing if the room temperature is warm (21c) and the TRV is set to 1 and the radiator is always hot then the TRV is knackered?

    Bloody hell I never knew that’s how they work. my bedroom one is always getting whacked up and down. See my house is rented the all radiators have different style temperatures valves attached. I have also had smart hive now. do I go off the thermostat from the hive and try and sync up the separate radiator valves (after I look into what models they are)

    really good video, thank you BUT in the interest of fairness can you do a follow up video in your cold area but this time with boiling water running through the pipe/ TRV fully open with the heat rom the hot water in the TRV rising to demonstrate /prove the heat from the hot water doesn't cause the wax to expand and close the valve. thanks john. ALSO please comment on; recently in the news there have been an increasing number of occasions where a PEN electrical supply cable has failed, removing the suppliers Neutral conductor so the incoming live connects to the earth to find a return path so everything continues working BUT any metal work now becomes live, in one case a substantial amount of current trying to get to earth, went through the gas meter, the heat caused the gas to ignite and blew up the house. so as well as connecting main bonding to the customers side of the meter we should probably also extend it to the incoming side of the gas meter if the gas supply pipe is not yellow poly

    Do these TRV's rely on your heating always being switched on? Please clear up any misconceptions I make but if your heating is switched off and the TRV detects the room is cold it will allow more water flow into the radiator, but won't that water be cold if your heating is not already switched on? Would it only benefit once the heating system was in use? I ask this because obviously not many households will have their heating on 24/7.

    So ive got a boiler that turns off when the room gets to a predefined setting- yet my rads have TRV’s- is it therefore pointless having the TRV’s on anything other than 5 if the boiler is doing the work the TRV’s would be

    I've told my family that central heating systems look after themselves and not tot fiddle with the controls, time and time ( and time ) again. Do they listen? Na!
    Her, who shall remain nameless, even turns the 'stat down if it gets too hot in the summer, when the boiler isn't running. To cool the room down, would you believe?
    Consequently, Thermostats are ineffective if they are accessible to the layman/woman.
    I have a bump on my head and permanent brain damage from constantly banging my head against a brick wall.🧱💥🤕✨🥴 Any sympathy would be well appreciated. 😎👍

    As a plumber I have had many a discussion on why two radiators in the same room both set the same but one stays hot longer than the other. My explanations range from the valve being in a restricted air space, behind curtains, furniture or other objects like coats hung on the end covering the valve. I also explain that a radiator on a outside wall or under a window may detect cooler air from outside than a radiator on an inside wall. draughts from windows, doors and vents add to this problem. The position and setting the valve can also be a factor, horizontal or vertical will give different readings which is made slightly worse if the valve is feeding the top of the radiator instead of the bottom. A top inlet vertical valve picks up the heat coming off the supply pipe where horizontal valve is not is not in the direct air flow. The last thing is certain valves come setup to be fitted as a horizontal valve and if fitted vertically they don't work properly. On some of these, on the valve body there is an adjuster with arrows showing the direction of flow. (Danfoss valves were the first I noticed set to be used horizontal) A couple of symptoms of this can be knocking and/or premature closing and late opening on temperature rise and fall.
    I would love to see you set up some experiments to show these effects.

    Dont buy Kudox. I bought 5 Kudox radiators from Screwfix for a new central heating install in my house 4 years ago; these radiators have a 15 year guarantee. One of the radiators has started rusting from the outside at the bottom rim. I applied to Kudox for a replacement but they just said it was my fault, that I had damaged it on install which is total bs. So the guarantee is worthless. Don't buy Kudox folks.

    If your heating system is adjusted by a control rad(Always on/Usually in hallway) in conjunction with a room thermostat (In hallway) Then some other rooms may be colder or hotter depending on room size, radiator size and thermal properties...etc And will only shut down the heating system when the hallway reaches the temp set at the thermostat.
    If you set your hallway thermostat to 21 degrees C because that temp suits you and say another small box room heats up a lot earlier than your draughty hallway, then you have the option to dial down the TRV in the box room, which stops feeding the radiator hot water at a set room temp rather than it carrying on heating because the hallway hasn't reached its 21c cut off. The valve above states 20C at position 3, so a tad more than 3 may be your personal setting for that room. This is where TRVs are most useful, especially at night when the family go to bed and each individual can set temps to their comfort levels.
    On the other hand, as I said most (if not all) domestic houses situate their thermostat and control rad in the hallway. This can be a problem if your most commonly used room, living room for example, is larger, has an inadequately sized radiator or less insulated than the hallway. This means you may have to set your hallway thermostat well above 21c before your living room reaches 21c. So you end up overheating the rest of the house if you don't have TRVs to compensate, costing you a lot more in heating bills.
    I've been in two properties where the above is a pain, even though they had TRVs. One was a tiny hallway about a meter away from the thermostat, so the whole heating system would shut off way too early to heat the other rooms, , and the other had an undersized living room radiator so both never got to desired temp without setting the hallway thermostats to nuclear meltdown settings. In both cases I relocated the thermostats into the living rooms and kept their perspective radiators on highest settings to act as the control radiators. One was easy as it worked over Wi-Fi and the other was nicely wired to the back of the living room so just had to drill and push wires through and reconnect. Seems more sensible to put them in the most commonly used rooms to me.

    Very useful video. I have a question:
    We have few radiators that are still hot on the top when the thermostat valve is on the lower setting or actually on the off setting.
    I bought digital thermostat to see if the valve is the problem but still do the same thing. The thermostat is set at 10 degrees, the room is at 23 degrees and the radiator is still hot, but just the top.
    Even when setting to defrost its still kind of on on top, even tough the room is 23 degrees.
    The house was made in the 60's and we have district heating.
    Do you think you can give me any clue on how to fix this?

    Hi there,
    I have a tall 5 bar grey rad in my hall,but the left side doesnt get as hot as the right,is it ok to fit auto bleed valves to both sides? Not sure if there is a partial blockage at the bottom( may take off and blast it through...) seem to get air out in bits,but not losing boiler pressure. Can air be generated by to high boiler temp?     Hi o have a question .I have 3 trv 11 peglar terrier valves. All 3 don't seem to move the thick plunger down until I turn to no 1 or less. The plunger are moving . How high should they come up is it possible all 3 are stuck and can't rise up higher. Thanks John

    Ok, this helps a bit, but we are still not in cigar territory. First off, what's the relationship between the temperature setting on the thermostat and the setting on the TRV? For instance, does it make any sense to set the thermostat to 18 degrees but the TRV to 5? From the video I am getting the sense that no, but I am not sure. Second (and this is the fault of the industry, not the video), but who on earth is best served if the TRV settings are just numbers, whereas the thermostat setting is in degrees Celsius? Third, and perhaps most fundamentally, it is still not clear to me why on earth we need thermostats on the wall when we have TRVs by the radiator. Why does a room TWO temperature regulation systems? It seems like we are begging for them to have a fight! Actually, come to think of it, there are probably three such systems, if you consider that most people also have timers on their boilers...

    Thermostatic radiator valve is not a panacea for reduced energy costs. Explain also what happened (and the solution) to your Heating boiler and your circulator when you ask less temperature from your radiators.

    Understood but if you want a room cold the flow will be stopped. How does the hot water reach the next radiator in the room next door which you want hot. To give an electrical analogy, in series cut one cut them all. In parallel cut one and all the rest continue.

    thank you that explains it, but mine is 11 yrs old, I think trv is faulty as it shuts off at 3, and it is very cold. 4 works and my thermostat is on 45c
