- Check out this Thai MRE - it is one of the most delicious, simple, effective, and straight forward lightweight ration packs currently in production. Being 50% lighter than a standard U.S. MRE, this ration is exceptionally portable and compact. Certainly one to look for, albeit somewhat uncommon on any ration market currently.

Steve, thanks so much, a very enjoyable video. I had the absolute pleasure of serving with a Battalion of Thai Infantry (Mech) in Vietnam, Republic of in 1970. Wonderful soldiers. We often shared rations, especially the supplemental rations that helped round out the daily C’s. The Thai’s had a supplemental that included dried, whole salted fish - very small, highly salted and we thought they were much like “potato chips” with a slight undertone of fish. What was loved was the ‘Banana Brandy” a small barrel of alcohol with a distinct banana flavor. Loved serving with these extraordinarily brave and patient soldiers.

as I can say most of thai food is easy to find and delicious ( except some place using other ingredients made flavor gone wrong )
Jasmine rice is always good to eat with any soup , grill meat , seafoods and
Panang is using coconut milk combine with meat and chilli paste is call prikgang in thai ( using stone mortar to made it make smell good and soft texture )
razor calm brand fish sauce really strong salty flavor but this chili not to hot and burn you mouth it make good little better flavor when you eat sweet food like pork or chicken fried with oyster sauce and add some sugar to make it sweet

As great as this little MRE was, I cannot help but wonder.. why was there a gusset on the bottom of the small 130 gram chicken panang retort pouch and not on the 300 gram jasmine rice?

I had one of these Thai MREs when I was in the field with the Thai Marines back in 2003 during operation cobra gold. I forget what the dish was, some noodle kind of dish, was strange, but Good overall! Crazy unique experience! Glad to see you review it Steve!

Have you ever done, or thought of doing ISS space rations? Or any astronaut food, because I imagine their diet is similar to an MRE. I would like to see you try it out.

NASA and ESA just sends a bunch of freeze dried food that they hand pick for the astronauts
ROSCOSMOS gives their cosmonauts just food tins and cans

He gets everything all set up, takes out his paint roller and brush, lines the walls with blue mesh tape, looks at the paint can. He then looks out the window, sees it's a beautiful day, smiles a little, then, with his smile still intact, turns back to the paint can, picks it up, takes a screwdriver, sticks it on the lid, opens it slightly, and with the grace of his voice, says:* "Nice Hiss."

4:00, I remember a very spicy soup in northern Thailand; seeing something I took for peas, I thought they would be safe to eat. They were not peas, but one more spice. It was really good, and it hurt a lot.
Harold Ellis sounds like fresh green peppercorns! They are tasty, but spicy (and look like tiny peas) :)

Cutting back on the preservatives seems like a bad idea for an mre. Then again it would save a bit of money, and 2 year shelf life isn't bad. But some preservatives do also help make things more consistent quality wise, plus 2 years sounds like that's if it's stored properly.

I always keep 3 in 1 coffee packets in stock, though I prefer the Vinacafe Vietnamese brand. They make excellent emergency rations to keep in your car, along with bottled water, a way to reliably and safely heat water, and maybe some freeze dried food. I keep an msr stove, gas canisters, a small pot, and some mountain house packets in the back of my van, just in case. I'm always concerned that I'll get stuck on the road in a snowstorm, and will need a hot drink to keep my temperature up. Those 3 in 1 coffee packets really serve that need well.

Gwen Patton : Same here. I have a little single burner I can screw onto the top on a mini-propane bottle (the kind we use for camping) and it has a stabilizer you put on the bottom of the gas bottle. Works great! Fast way to boil water with a stainless steel percolator! I live in earthquake country and always worry about a bridge collapse so keep hikers, socks, rain jacket, and other gear in my vehicle in case I have to walk home and bridges are pancaked / collapsed. 60-mile commute and it could end up taking me 4 or 5 days to get back home.
Oh, portable water filter! I keep a couple different kinds on hand. Life straw, plus a life straw that filters out radioactivity and a basic Katahdan water filter and another ceramic pitcher filter like the Berki, only smaller.
