It was Roger's girlfriend who first suggested to Roger that they should wear drag. Roger brought the idea to the band and, as Freddie said, they couldn't wait to jump into their frocks. It is very much in keeping with the British sense of humor to dress in drag. Actually, the band dressed as the cast of the popular soap opera Coronation Street but here in the US, that the pastiche was lost. It was Freddie's idea to bring the Royal Ballet dancer into the video. He loved the ballet. John Deacon wrote the song as a feminist anthem.
He hung out with a few Ballet Dancers and Theatre actors. All very polite and they still speak very highly of him. But they weren't earning a fraction of what he was. They'd be lucky to get £20k per year. So when he'd invite them to parties in Germany he'd fly them over, let them stay, they'd party for a couple of days, and then he'd fly them home again. Apparently he was very generous like that. They'd always say no, its not right. But he just did it. All his parties had a theme with strict rules. Like everyone had to dress in drag or they couldn't come in. No exceptions. And they'd all go the extra mile to get ready. But then he'd appear down the stairs dressed as a Court Jester. He always broke the rules of his own party. He sounded like a blast
Spot on!, Corrie 'Coronation Street' is the longest running 'soap' in Telly history. A gritty soap comedy/drama. As a MANC (Mancunian, a dweller of Manchester, England 🥰) We loved what Queen did in this video as an homage to Corrie xxxxx Enjoy, it's not just a Brit thig, honest xxx
The scene that made you uncomfortable was actually a performance with the Royal Ballet. They invited him to do a charity show. He wasn't a trained dancer so they lifted him, he dove onto his group , was carried & sang Bohemian Rhapsody while upside down. It's on video & is amazing . The other people in the house were the band members. The pretty blonde girl was Roger Taylor. The whole series in the house was a joke based on a British soap opera called Coronation Street & it wasn't even Freddie 's idea. It was a huge hit in England & Europe, but America hated it & it was banned on MTV. Poor Freddie was blamed.
I was offended that you was offended by saying "REAL man" he was and is the most iconic bi man in England and well worthy of the title, R. I. P. Freddie its just a shame he hasn't seen the love and admiration and following he has now.
Fuck you, he was bisexual. He said repeatedly he was bisexual. Don't you DARE erase us. Freddie was bisexual icon and will continue to be alongside David Bowie! Suck on your phobia!
Your reaction shows why it was banned in america. They didn't get the point cos it has nothing to do at all with coming out. It is about a soap opera in the UK, they mocked it... just listen to the lyrics: "I've fallen in love for the first time. THIS time I know it's for real. I want to break free". It's at total contradiction, as these soap operas have weird and weak story lines lol
The song had nothing to do with a soap opera or Freddie coming out. The song is about a person who wants a partner who respects them enough to not be clingy, jealous and controlling, particularly when the person is out with friends or by him/herself. The video was simply a campy homage to the British soap opera Coronation Street and Americans just didn't get it or didn't want to get it. Queen was way ahead of the times so much that it goes to show just how genius they really were! And John Deacon wrote an absolutely beautiful song that I'm sure many who've been in jealous or abusive relationships can relate to.
The bassist wrote the song(deacon) and its about him opening up emotionally with their fanbase. He was shy and he finally broke free from that due to the fans influence. He was also pretty pissed off that they did this music video the way they did, especially when it meant so much to him personally.
@@dh8900 The video was banned, mainly in the US on MTV. They felt it was not what their viewers would want to see. Queen (the original quartet) never toured America again after that. America's loss.

So good to see folks exploring what we have in common, instead of what pulls us apart. The Crazy Old White Grandma
The song was written by John Deacon has nothing to do with Freddie Mercury coming out, people are still arguing to this day about the meaning of the song. Only John Deacon knows the true answer. The fact that they are dressed in drag sent America into some kind of homophobic headspin and this video was banned from MTV. They are actually sending up a long-running British soap called Coronation Street. This is simply three straight men and a gay man dressing up and having a bit of fun. Freddie might have been gay but he wasn't a cross-dresser. When people watch this video and make all kinds of assumptions, most of them wrong. I love how Americans find this shocking, it's just good paying fun to us Brits.

SaMMy A1847 is right. I also heard that Freddie’s “breaking free” moment is actually in Bohemian Rhapsody where “Mama, just killed a man....Put a gun against his head...Pulled my trigger, now he's dead” represents the death of his old life and embracing his true self.

i think it’s really messed up that you “can’t” look at the parts of the video with just men it’s quite rude honestly if you’d like to be respected as a “real man” you should respect other people too. i’m straight and it does not bother me to look at this video i absolutely love this video
I just clicked on this reaction to recommended the same song. The last video Queen made together and just before Freddie passed away. I still gives me the jitters when I see it or hear the song.
Ironically MTV banned this video and requested to them that they film an alternative video for the US market and they refused point blank and as a result, they never toured the US again. If you watch the movie Bohemian Rhapsody it’ll put a lot of this into perspective 🔥
As a straight guy this is one of my favourite queen songs and the video always gives me a good chuckle but like the other comments he wasn't "coming out"
The only thing wrong here was Chris saying "yall gotta respect me too , as a REAL man". Freddie was more man than you'll ever be Chris! He just didn't share your intrests.
You can’t expect people to be completely comfortable with something like homosexuality, when it probably wasn’t ever something they could’ve experienced as normal in a society they live in... he even said that he’s uncomfortable but still likes the song, he didn’t say he hated Freddy for being gay or bi or whatever... you can be accepting of someone even if they still make you a bit uncomfortable, that doesn’t mean anything bad.
I can’t get over how good the bass in this song is especially the first verse with that “doom doo doo doom doo doo” right into the amazing vocals by Freddie

Did you even notice the other "women" in the video were the other band members? If I was drunk at a party and their Drummer Roger Taylor who was dressed in that school girl outfit... I mean... Wow. (LOL) It was a real worry. Ha.
This song has absolutely nothing to do with coming out of the closet. It’s a song about an oppressive, emotionally draining relationship. Most gay men do not have an inherent desire to do drag. And being straight does not make you a “real man,” as you put it.

Some background from Wikipedia: The song is largely known for its music video for which all the band members dressed in drag, a concept proposed by Roger Taylor, which parodied the long-running soap opera Coronation Street. The second part of the video included a composition rehearsed and performed with the Royal Ballet and choreographed by Wayne Eagling. Whereas the parody was acclaimed in the United Kingdom - where cross-dressing is a popular trope in British comedy - it was considered controversial in the United States.

It was also banned by Top of the Pops abroad. I think that’s the name of the show that would not allow it on their show.
It wasn’t banned?
@@dh8900 The video was banned, mainly in the US on MTV. They felt it was not what their viewers would want to see. Queen (the original quartet) never toured America again after that. America's loss.

Has nothing to do with sexual preference. Drag is a common component of British humour and 100s of years of theatre.
Some background from Wikipedia:
The song is largely known for its music video for which all the band members dressed in drag, a concept proposed by Roger Taylor, which parodied the long-running soap opera Coronation Street. The second part of the video included a composition rehearsed and performed with the Royal Ballet and choreographed by Wayne Eagling. Whereas the parody was acclaimed in the United Kingdom - where cross-dressing is a popular trope in British comedy - it was considered controversial in the United States.
You should definitely listen to more Queen! I recommend 'Don't Stop Me Now', 'We Will Rock You', 'The Show Must Go On', 'Another One Bites the Dust', 'Somebody to Love', 'We Are the Champions' and 'Who Wants to Live Forever.' They're all LEGENDARY Queen songs.
I grew up around this music. My dad introduced me to the world of Queen, Nazareth, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin and many more. I knew all along the sad story of FM, his sexual orientation, the cause of death. And you know what? This kind of talent is ageless, faceless, genderless, whatever-less. It should be on the UNESCO heritage list. It unites people and peoples, generations and cultures. It's forever and for all eternity.
Dress up in drag or without shirt, Freddie was sexy as hell! Roger Taylor in school girl is pretty! I would love to give a hug to grumpy grandma and have tea with Mrs Bunny sleepers 🤣
This was not a coming out song, John Deacon wrote the song and it had nothing to do with sexual orientation. But the video was extremely entertaining.
the timing of the song also coincided with splitting from their shitty manager and taking control of their professional lives. another is Death on Two Legs
When you listen to it again, you'll find that there are backing vocals. In fact, at 3:33 is the drummer, who is the primary Backing Vocalist in the band.

It was received by quite a few ballet aficionados with the same confused and uncomfortable reception as you guys and the general assertion was the overt "indecency" of the choreography.
