    Could you imagine if the characters all sang the full version of this song during the final battle instead of a reprise of This Wish? Having Sabino finally play the song and inspiring everyone to collectively join in and fight back against Magnifico. That would've been such an amazing payoff.

    The stupid reasons:
    The song is too sad, the kids will cry
    The movie is too long, the kids will get bored
    The grandfather is a secondary character so he can only sing one song and he's already going to sing: "When You Wish Upon a Star", so scrap this one

    from the cutting of this scene, to all the scrapped concepts, it makes the final product all the more disappointing and empty when compared to all we could've had for what was supposed to be a film celebrating 100 years of disney animation.. with films like encanto and even once upon a studio, i still have hope that the creativity that made disney animation so magical and cemented it's legacy is there somewhere and not completely lost, even if executives, ceos & all those soulless corporate assholes make us believe otherwise.

    3:49 Since Sabino was 100 when Asha was 17, he already would've been elderly when she was born, at about 83 years old - so it makes sense he would've been old when giving his wish away. But it could've taken Magnifico a while to collect all the adults wishes, so its plausible that Sabino might not have given his wish to Magnifico right after he became king, cos Magnifico looks at least 50.

    The suits made them cut it, eh? I was part of a focus group who watched the movie a year before it came out and you’re correct where it is placed in the movie . We told the moderator that we were confused if he was already able to play guitar (or lute) before he gave up his wish 80 years ago or it also seemed like he was magically granted his wish to play once he got his wish back. It wasn't very clear and I assumed that's why they cut it.

    • @agnesleuenberger3713
      @agnesleuenberger3713 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      I thought the grandpa's wish was to inspire people with his music, so him knowing how to play music already isn't inconsistent. If that's the reason why they removed it, it's quite dumb on their part. They just needed to rewrite a few dialogue lines to make things more clear.
      But apparently their reason wasn't a good one, so you might be right.

    Imagine if this movie was about the three wishes the genie can’t grant. Making someone fall in love with you, wishing for someone to come back from the dead ( cough cough Aisha’s father) or to even kill someone. Aisha would wish her dad back not knowing the consequences, and magnifico could’ve used his power to make the Queen fall in love with him, with the latter being either Magnifico wishing Aisha dead or her dad 🧑 if she succeeded.

Just like you said, it wouldn't have fixed the movie, but it has far more heart than any of the tracks that made it to the finished cut. The studio leadership should be ashamed of themselves for tampering with their artists so flagrantly.

    The way this song was cut kinda reminds me of Pocahontas' "If I Never Knew You", another slower song that was cut after being animated, that was solidifying the theme of the movie (In Pocahontas' case, it's that it's a love story that couldn't work, but both have no regrets when they have to say goodbye), but was cut because focus group kids got bored (At least I'm assuming that's why it was cut from Wish. Maybe Disney just saw the movie as a sinking ship and threw overboard whatever wasn't attached to the walls.), with the deleted song finding its way into the credits. Pocahontas' song got completed animation for the 2005 DVD release, where you'd be able to choose to watch the movie in its entirety with or without the added song, but I don't know if there would be a point for Disney to animate songs back into the movie in the age of streaming and TH-cam uploads.

    • @kristinahuchison2511
      @kristinahuchison2511 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      OMG yes! That song is legit one of my favorites in the Disney collection! Tbh I find Pocahontas as a movie underrated/overhated, despite I get why it hasn’t held up the same way as most Disney movies. Ignoring the sloppy mess of historical inaccuracies, I truly do believe If I Never Knew You had stayed in the movie, more people would be more forgiving or willing to overlook the historical accuracy problems. But ultimately, more people wouldn’t hate John Smith as a Disney character so much. I feel so many people forget or completely ignore how much he changes and matures in the movie because he fell in love with Pocahontas. He goes from being this arrogant captain to being someone who isn’t afraid to die because of how much he loves Pocahontas. There’s even a deleted reprisal ending which made the sad ending more bittersweet and makes Pocahontas work so much better as the one movie. Because her movie isn’t about getting a happy ending, instead it shows a more mature ending with both characters making the very difficult and heartbreaking decision to say goodbye for the greater good.
      The most insulting and infuriating part of this song being cut is merely the fact it was because test audiences (specifically young children) got bored and fussy during this part, so Disney stupidly chose to cut it. Which is beyond me, considering it is NOT meant for kids and has a more mature message, considering it isn’t about falling in love or supposed to be visually entertaining. Its about being in the moment and having one last moment with your significant other (or whoever is dying) Sorry that was long lol

    • @cherriegetison6093
      @cherriegetison6093 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@kristinahuchison2511 It's not long! It's crazy how the heads of Disney wanted to craft this movie for another Best Picture nomination at the Oscars after Beauty and the Beast, yet cut the song that would have tied everything together. In the movie, the song would be about them saying goodbye because John Smith would be executed, but by the end, it's clear that the song's about how they have to part ways (John Smith needing medical attention in England, Pocahontas' duty to her people). There's also the fact that with this song cut, John Smith only sings before he meets Pocahontas, when he is selfish. With musical numbers being ways to express what a character is feeling, not dedicating a song to show how he's changed for the better was a big mistake.

    • @kristinahuchison2511
      @kristinahuchison2511 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@cherriegetison6093 oh I know! I’ve watched all of the deleted scenes for Pocahontas, and aside this song, the most irritating one was Pocahontas as an English woman. It perfectly shows how John could tell how ridiculous she looks trying to be someone she isn’t just to impress him. He takes her makeshift dress off, telling her she looks so much more beautiful as her true self and likes she isn’t what he normally thinks of a woman (like how English ladies act) she’s free spirited, playful, curious and eager to show him more of her world and culture. I never saw John as a selfish character, considering he almost drowned in the beginning of the movie to save Thomas (I’m not kidding, the last thing you want to do is fall overboard in a thunderstorm) but more he’s a genuinely good guy with misguided views. He doesn’t take forever to change his ways like Aladdin does (I’m sorry but Al literally takes the entire d*mn movie to finally stop lying) But yes. If I Never Knew You is such a beautiful song, and I really love how most of it is only sung by John, considering he is the one to grow. Its his love letter to Pocahontas and helping her understand how much she means to him. In a way, I find this to be the twin of Colors of the Wind, which is Pocahontas’s “love” song about her world and people, helping him understand how hateful and toxic his beliefs truly were. But I also really love the visuals accompanying the song, because it’s supposed to be bittersweet and sad. It is NOT supposed to be flashy or Earth shattering and filled with Disney magic like A Whole New World or Beauty and the Beast. I also find the last part of the song very, very sad and underrated. It shows John kissing her hand before he vanishes, which is supposed to be a reference to her first song Just Around the Riverbend when she wouldn’t let Kocuom take her hand, indicating she didn’t love him. But here, she gives her hand to John, showing he’s the one she loves. But yes, having this song at the end just solidifies the sad ending. I slightly disagree about their fate of NEVER being together again. Yes I understand the implications of the song, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re not allowed to ever reunite ever again. Honestly, this song makes me hate the sequel even more BECAUSE it forced her to end up with another guy and Rolfe was an awful fit for Pocahontas. Like, the sequel was nothing more than a huge middle finger to the ending of the movie, because its like “sorry, but Pocahontas ended up with someone who takes the entire damn movie to stop trying to change her into someone else” and Disney KNEW making Pocahontas not end up with John Smith was seriously going to p*ss off so many people, but they did it anyway for the sake of “historical accuracy” after Pocahontas got so much criticism and outright hate from some.
      Its honestly so frustrating this movie easily had the power to be just like the previous movies (probably not exceeding the Lion King lol) BUT Disney was being stupid and flat out ignorant of a certain ethnic group. A lot of people have even admitted to me they’d like the movie a lot better if it wasn’t based on a real story. While movies like Hercules (which is painfully inaccurate and flat out inappropriate for kids) have grown in popularity and get away with basically completely lying about so many details because “it’s fictional, not real no matter how much Disney lied”
      But anyways, I think if this song had stayed, more people wouldn’t be so hard on the movie, considering movies like Anastasia or Balto don’t get nearly as much hate (Anya literally died as a 10 year old)

    • @kristinahuchison2511
      @kristinahuchison2511 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@cherriegetison6093 also forgot to mention. I found it pretty sweet and ironic Mel Gibson actually insisted he wanted to sing any songs John had. I remember reading something about Alan Menken having to rewrite the song to fit Mel’s deeper voice, that’s why its in a different key. At the time, most characters normally had professional singers for the songs (like Judy Kuhn) instead of the voice actors themselves singing unless they’re specifically cast for both like Indina Menzel or Jonathan Groth as Kristoff (hence why he got an entire song in the sequel) And clearly Mel gave it his all when recording the song (which is unfortunate considering he didn’t do a lot for the promotion for the movie) but damn does he have a gorgeous voice! It makes it so much more disappointing the song was ultimately cut. As I mentioned, Pocahontas had quite a few funny scenes and lighthearted moments that sadly got cut. I understand this movie is supposed to have a more serious and mature tone, but that doesn’t mean the movie can’t have fun or humor. Heck, the Lion King and Hunchback of Notre Dame both have serious themes too, and they have a lot of funny characters and moments (not counting those stupid gargoyles)

      @@kristinahuchison2511 Lol good point! John Smith is selfless for his fellow Englishmen, so it was just him learning to have empathy for Pocahontas and her people. It stinks that none of that is represented in the soundtrack, given that he's the second most important character in the movie. Anastasia is one of my favorite movies, despite its historical inaccuracy. Though to be fair, Don Bluth's Anastasia was specifically an animated remake of a 1956 Anastasia movie. So a retelling of a retelling. I wish I could fid the original source for this claim, but I remember reading that Don Bluth was very limited in his options for stories he could make when he was set to make his first film for Fox. So he basically picked one and just made his own thing. I feel like Disney could have easily renamed the characters in Pocahontas and avoided most of the criticism that happened even in 1995. Even without the familiarity of Pocahontas' name, they just released Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and Lion King! But who knows? Maybe that's horrible financial advice.

    I do wanna point out the songs aren’t bad mainly because it doesn’t fit the message. The problem is these songs were gonna get the point across perfectly til they changed many things. Example, At all costs the song sung by both Asha and Magnifico doesn’t fit the wishes because it wasn’t meant for them it was meant as a love song between Asha and Star who was to be transformed into a teen boy. Then when they changed Star to a lil Luma from Mario the song no longer made sense.
    Thats the problem with this movie’s music, tbh most of the music is “Ok” not bad. I’d argue At all Costs, This Wish, Knowing what I know now and A wish worth making were pretty good. I’d put welcome to roses below all of those songs cuz I don’t hate it it kinda reminds me of a slowed down version of Family Madrigal cuz it’s an intro song.
    Anyway, I like the movie but I wish we got more, this movie could have been so spectacular and a huge hit for so long. But they chose to not take chances and erase what made them magic in the first place.

    This scene highlights a major flaw in this film: Sabino's wish is vague, as Magnifico says. What he did before the rise of Rosas and the reason for his wish aren't explored or explained, and his wish to inspire others is kinda cheating.
    And lemme just say: imagine if Asha's wish was to revive her father, but this threatens the balance of life and death, showing why Magnifico says some wishes shouldn't be granted.

    • @NorthStar8211
      @NorthStar8211 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      Sabino composed when you wish upon a star. Hardly a revolutionary song.
      Asha already made her wish in the movie and it was that people in her community would have a chance to make their wishes come true. She probably did not have a specific wish before that or maybe she would have formulated one by the time she was 18 and it would not be resurrection. At best, she might have wished to see her father's spirit one more time but not restore him to a second life. Magnifico has explained that he takes one's most defining wish from one's heart and these wishes are usually family plans or career aspirations as seen in most bubbles. There is no killing each other or resurrecting each other or wishing that one's home collapses. The wishes are all positive and radiating happiness and positivity, which is why Magnifico spends so much time among them (it is the only thing that makes him feel happiness according to "Recipe for Adventure").
      In the real world, at least in the fields of education, art etc, when we say "inspire the young", we generally mean it in a positive way, i.e. make them want to study or work harder, improve themselves, learn a language, create their own art etc. It is not considered a vague statement, it is considered to be one of the goals of every educator really: inspire and be a role model. Magnifico was just looking for an excuse really and playing with words. Besides, Magnifico said that most wishes will not be granted, not just some. It is OK is he wants to use his energy for granting only wishes that contribute something to the kingdom but he should have been honest about that and not tricking people into giving him wishes that do not qualify. It is that simple. He wants the wishes for his collection and that's it.
      There are no negative wishes among bubbles and this narrative needs to stop sometime.The trailer had just given the wrong impression but this has been more than adequately clarified.

    • @vassiliapolychronaki1631
      @vassiliapolychronaki1631 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      If Asha's grandfather was the sort of person who aimed to inspire social agitation, he would obviously not have given his wish to Magnifico while expecting him to grant it. It would be like expecting a turkey to vote for Christmas. Magnifico is not a random wizard whose services people wish to employ for a dark purpose. He is also the king and he has set a rule that he will grant wishes for the good and the worthy and that rules out anything evil. Common sense dictates that people with questionable purposes would refuse to give him their wish or they would suppress their number one wish and try wishing for something else, knowing that not only would an ill-intentioned wish not be granted but that they would also forget about it. And this is why the argument of Magnifico supposedly not granting wishes because bad wishes should not be granted fails. People do not deliberately give him problematic wishes because they know that they will not be granted. Asha would obviously not be asking for anyone's resurrection because this one would definitely sound like a wish that the king would not grant.

  • @kristinahuchison2511

    Cool video! I was pretty disappointed how little Saba actually appeared in the movie, let alone impacted the story as this is what drives Asha to rebel against Magnifico’s philosophies/choices regarding HIS kingdom.
    Did you know Part of Your World from the Little Mermaid actually wasn’t supposed to be in the movie? Originally it was supposed to be a song about Ariel’s desire for Eric specifically, but Howard Ashman felt the character was much deeper than that. The reprisal was going to be the only part included, but Ashman fought like h*ll to keep the main song in. I truly believe the Disney Renaissance wouldn’t have been born if the song was cut, and Ariel would’ve come off more as boycrazy instead of a free spirited and curious girl who truly doesn’t belong in the ocean.
    One of my favorite songs sadly suffered the same fate as this one: If I Never Knew You from Pocahontas. This one was fully intended to be in the movie and plays a critical part of the movie overall, considering how many times the melody is used as an instrumental, specifically when Pocahontas and John Smith first meet, their first kiss and other moments in the movie. Unfortunately the only version in the theatrical release was the pop version. It felt like putting a dirty bandage on an already infected wound imo. The song did end up getting included in the Masterpiece edition of Pocahontas and oh course the 10th anniversary edition which also had an alternate ending, a reprisal of the song before John leaves. But anyway, ignoring the whole mess of historical inaccuracies (granted I wish Pocahontas wasn’t based on such a sad and real story) I really believe if the song had stayed, Pocahontas would’ve done better and more people would be more forgiving of the historical inaccuracies problem. But ultimately, more people wouldn’t hate John Smith as a DISNEY character so much. So many people criticize him as an arrogant captain who’s racist against her people, BUT completely ignore everything he does in the movie to change, including his sacrifices for Thomas and almost being killed to protect Powhatan from being killed. I find this song to be one of the more underrated love songs in Disney, and I actually appreciate it isn’t a song about falling in love like 99% of Disney love songs are. It takes a different and more mature approach of love, showing how Pocahontas and John both changed because of their love for each other and how empty and alone they’d be if they never knew each other. It gives off such a sweet yet sad flavor of wanting to be together so badly, but unfortunately they can’t. This song makes me cry everytime and makes me hate the sequel even more.

    Can i just throw out here that magnifico is bullshitting? Like thats kinda the point hes lying because he gets off to having complete control on who gets to have a wish granted or not. The fact sabinos wish is literally to inspire people with his music and that translsting to "eh its too vauge better not" is the point.
    The eniter point is its your wish your dream why does some Buckhead with glowy eyes gets to tell you want you can persure. On top of that we do see other wishes, a woman wants to drive a boat another wants to fly and one guy wants to climb mountains. Rosas doesn't seem to have any real enconomic inequality other than maybe Asha and some other families living outside the actual city, but they still are paid well and hell asha even works for the king so not like they're struggling.
    We don't need to see a more in depth reason for the no of it all because we have all we need, go back and watch the scene in his chamber and really look at how it plays out. An actual non bias person wouldn't shoot her down this way, im not saying your wrong about anything im just trying to elaborate and help build a picture on why the movie is the way it is.
