  • Watching Cast Away I thought "Why do we care about a volleyball?" so that is the question I wanted to answer with this video essay.
    Cast Away was directed by Robert Zemeckis and starred Tom Hanks and Wilson...the volleyball.

    ME: "Because he is the hero that Chuck deserves, but not the one he needs right now... He's a silent guardian...A watchful protector...A white knight..."

      It effects everyone differently. I thought the volleyball storyline was kind of funny too, until I thought he might let that rope go. I ran a bit of anxiety when he was swimming towards it, and relief when he chose to stay on the raft instead. I can't help but chuckle as I remember freinds yelling "Wilson!!!" When they dropped that same volleyball during a game.

    This is a beautiful video. I agree with everything you said! Wilson is a part of him, and mentally stabilizes him during his time on the island. I personally connect to chuck sometimes. When I was an adolescent, dealing with physical and mental changes in my life (moving schools, having no friends, being diagnosed with two learning disorders), I looked in the mirror and started creating characters, based off myself, and based off the movies, videogames and films I saw and loved. I drew the characters to give them a visual look, and I figured out their separate personalities by "talking" to them in the mirror, and thinking of them through music. It ended up working, and I ended up with hand-typed books on these characters.
    Now, I'm in my mid to late teens. I have best friends, I've discovered my sexuality, I'm used to the usual stress of high school and I'm getting a lot better, mentally. I look back on those characters in my notebook now, and I realized how lonely I was back then. Not being able to connect to the people around me, not being able to understand real love and commitment, led me down a lane of imagination. These characters helped me become who I am now, and I will forever thank them for that.

    I have a feeling the Wilson character was also a bit of product placement, being a name of a sporting goods company, but the good kind.
    Apparently neither side paid a dime.

    • @PeakedInterest
      @PeakedInterest  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You're correct. The fact he was a Wilson ball was just because Wilson was the name of the volleyball prop and wasn't originally written that way. Originally chuck would would speak with himself more directly as two separate persona but this was changed by zemeckis who felt it worked better to have an external representation of chuck

    Well we might just make it did that thought ever cross your brain. Well regardless of the outcome I would rather take my chances out there on the Ocean, than to spend the rest of mh life TALKING TO A GOD DAMN VOLLEYBALL... He actually kind of whispers when he talks to him in this scene, like at the back of his mind subconscious he doesn't want to be heard arguing with Wilson. I named my cat Wilson after him lol

    Although i can connect with Wilson more i wonder why didn't he use his fiance's photo to talk to afterall it was an actual person he was so close to 🤔

      That's a really interesting point. He even looks at it multiple times but never speaks to it. Good catch

      I think it is because he doesn't want her to see him as a sad vulnerable person, and because she is safe at home. Wilson happens to be in the same predicament he is in, and therefore will have firsthand experience and no judgement towards him. This is just my opinion of course.

    I remember back when I was a kid I painted my volleyball with my own blood for it to be my Wilson after watching this movie. I think I still have it.
