I doubt it is a coincidence that this is happening just before the Ukrainian offensive. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see similar incidents in other areas of Russia. It also wouldn't be that surprising if regions that want out of the Russian Federation took advantage. This is in fact one of Putin's greatest fears, which he alluded to only a few days ago.
The Russian units may have been preparing for this longer, and may have support within the Russian army, more than anyone knew was going on the past year. If they have been hanging out and helping the Ukrainians they will have a good military sense and training and be much better soldiers than the Russian army, more disciplined and definitely more committed. For all we know they could have sleeper units all over Russia. There must be lots of very disenchanted soldier survivors of conscription who have had their eyes opened about Putin and would be prepared to fight to overthrow him for a better Russia. If the Kremlin fell all Putin's installed controllers in the republican of the federation would probably be thrown out... And it could be possible, with good leadership, to call together a meeting of all the parts of the Federation to organize management of the country until real elections could be organized . If all parts of the federation leaders were committed it could happen without leading to civil war.. very difficult but possible.. China and the West would have to agree to cooperate on stabilizing the situation in Russia to prevent the economy there collapsing... I wish we were post the Ukraine war and that far ahead ..rebuilding Ukraine .. reconditioning Russia ..and developing new economic world economic relations between all countries based on supporting each other and not destroying each other, and wealth answerable and controlled.. Some will laugh ..but such a wold is possible if we all wanted it and committed to it, and war and dictatorships were not a permissable option tolerated..

Imagine Ukraine just went FULL FORCE attacking Northwards taking HUGE SWATHS of Russian territory. I know the west and NATO said Ukraine shouldn't do that, but the morale boost would be HUGE. And it would be totally justified, and a lot less deadly than simply trying to regain Ukraine's lost territory. If anything it might be the smarter decision, trying to retake Russian occupied Ukraine will be like D-Day, so much life will be lost
