English history is so fascinating! The English as a whole are a fascinating nation, and the coins you showcased are splendid, the historical context you gave only made them even more interesting to behold. Thanks!
Oliver Cromwell was George Washington’s biggest inspiration. The idea never died and still lived up to the American civil war as the the parliamentarians became the north and the royalist became the south in the 1660’s
Wow that is a super old coin thanks for sharing 👍
Thanks matey!
it's nice to see coins of the past and the history behind them thank you for sharing them with us all 👍
Thanks Dave
Great and informative video Luke👍 I’ve only got 3 commonwealth so far, 2x half groats and a half penny which is incredibly small and has been pierced so it’s a scrappy little article but I like it.
Thanks mate! 😁 the piercing if through the middle would have been done during the great recoinage to render void the last of the Hammered coins in circulation!
@@TheHammeredCorner yes I’ve seen it quite a few times in the past. They usually look like they have been punched through with a square nail👍
Another excellent video Luke. I’m proud to own a nicely detailed Commonwealth half groat. Thanks once again for sharing your ever expanding knowledge surrounding the fascinating subject of hammered coins.
Thanks matey! You’re welcome and am happy to hear you own a lovely half groat. They are one of my favourites 😁
Nice video Luke😄
Thanks mate!
I also have a commonwealth penny, I'd love to have more of them! I must be one of the few people who likes them for their simplicity as well as interesting history :).
They are a great series! Very an incredibly interesting period 🤩
If collectors find them boring, please send the coins to me 😃
Can you make video about what coin did shakespear use in his century?
Sounds like a good idea 😁
that is a pretty nice counterfeit
Thanks Andre!
My thoughts on the coins:
I think that they are OK. They are just a shield and so, yes, are fairly uninteresting, but Tudor coinage and up have coats of arms and shields too. I think the best way to have gone about it would have been to have the shield on the reverse and Cromwell on the obverse. I've seen coins with Cromwell on them before, and I'm not sure of their situation; I know that all of his farthings are pattern, but as for the rest I am unsure. I do think that as historical pieces they are very interesting though; coins from the only time that Britain didn't have a monarchy since Rome.
The video was very good too. Every topic you've covered is very interesting and your scripts are very well written and meticulously researched. I really liked the bit with the royalists' snide comments of the coinage (God isn't on the Commonwealth's side and so on). Bet Cromwell was kicking himself for that!
TL;DR Interesting coins but boring design.
I have 3
I think it's interesting that despite Cromwell's republican sentiments, the Commonwealth was barely established before he issued a coinage bearing his portrait, styled after the old Roman emperors, and engraved w/ Latin titles no less, to remind everyone who was truly in command...
You’re totally right, a very interesting time indeed 😁
Forgive me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Cromwell's thing to get rid of Latin on coins and put English on them instead?
