      Not meaning to be derogatory or dismissive or anything else negative. Just a forewarning for anyone going offshore who thinks those are rough seas: those are NOT rough seas. It's a little sloppy out there, that's all. Copy the weather, examine the weather, heed the weather, stay at least a day (better two days) ahead of the weather.

    • @davidparadis490
      @davidparadis490 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @chuckbecker4983 the term "rough seas" is used in relation to the vessel...what is rough to a 14' boat versus a battleship is relative to size...yes, we know the ocean can throw 30' plus seas with ease

      Mostly relativie to experience throw a guy from the pnw out there he will say it’s normal or not bad . Throw a lake boater and he he will be scared . I’ve been in tbe gulf with 20-25 footers and it’s nasty not a problem for the boat but I didn’t care for it . That’s a 60 foot boat and those waves can be considered heavy for that crew.

      35-40 kt wind isn't strong enough to be called storm.
      In the European wind scale it's in the mid range of a gale wind.
      The lowest category of storm starts from 48 kt.

    Before reading the title, before hearing any of the narration, while looking only at the video, within a few seconds I thought that looks very much like the Big Sur coast. That is what is called an outer unprotected coast. The prevailing NW winds (330*) do rip through especially when they clock to the north. The trick is to head off shore 80 nm or more although that is not conducive to harbor hopping. She's handling the conditions fine. Steady on.

    Great video, thank you. Impressive. Interesting to compare to how a power cruiser would handle such seas from the point of view of progress vs. comfort. This was typical gale force conditions, B8, stable, comfortable but making 5 knots. Compare my experience on a 50 ft cruiser, much lighter (30k lb), in B6 only. Still uncomfortable but the speed varied from 9 to 13 knots. So, the key question is, how long are you willing to put up with this. The benefit of the cruiser is that the time to shelter could be 2x shorter. And after 10-15 hours of this, you want to look for shelter anyway.

      trustworthy IF properly maintained. Money alone does not get it done. What are the condition of the thru hulls? Do you know, do you care--many boaters have no clue, they "pay a lot" so they "are safe", until something lets goes. A humble boat well maintained beats a boat which cost a fortune and is not maintained.

    I have done loads with my life, and includes the 3 times I served in the British Army. My family traditions are The Sea, The Container Berth, The rest of the Docks, The Fruit Market, and Aircraft Indusrty. We are also have Sporting traditions like Football (Soccer), Atheletics, and even Dancing lol. I'm a 49yr old Disabled British Army Veteran, and have the honour and privilege to have done All our traditions, and a few more seperate ones like: Driving a lorry, and 10yrs at The National Motor Museum in Beaulieu Southampton.
    I loved the 4 years I worked in the Docks, and Container Berth. Also the 5 short years in 3 different Army trades, joined a 3 srperate times. I joined the Jnr Ldrs Royal Artillery in June 88. but Achilles tendon Injury made me leave. Luckily I was able to reinlist in Dec 89 for my 3 yrs in the RCT Maritime Fleet. The 3rd time was whilst I worked in the Aircraft Industry. I split from my ex in Nov 01 (7 weeks after 911, and I knew on 911 war was coming. like many ex or serving military did). I trained 2yrs to get fit enough, and joined the SAS Signals Sqn T.A in 02. I broke my back doing a charity parachute jump on a weekend off from pre selection build up course. Still went on Selection with a broken back. Very long story from (93 to present).
    I wanted to share that boring bit about my busy life, cause they All had their own way of doing things, and many were very dangerous jobs. Not for the faint hearted.
    The one that stands head and shoulders above the rest, is My 3 yrs at sea in the RCT Maritime Fleet on various vessel types (also on a Tid Tug and Dutch Barge many yrs after I left for my brothers mates company. Contracted to take the sediment from the cement companies, that when they dredged for ballast, they had many tons of mud etc to be dumped back at sea). Those Flat bottom landing craft, really tested ones true grit, and nerves. In truth an understatement. One vessel type called an RCL (Ramp Craft Logistics), had Complement 6, Length 33.3m, Beam 8.3m, Maximum draught (laden) 1.5m, displacement (laden) 290 tonnes, Load capacity 96 tonnes (four 20 ft ISO shipping containers) or 65 tonnes (four fully laden 8 tonne vehicles), Propulsion 2 x Dorman8JTCWM Diesel engines, Maximum speed (laden) 10 knots. They could safely operate upto a Force 7 Gale. However with a flat bottom, they bounced you all over the place, esp when they crashed down from a tall wave. It would make a noisy thud, and violently knock us about on occasion. So if we were caught out at Sea in anything over a Force 7. Then it was very scary. However as flat bottomed, A force 7 was our equivalent to force 9 to 11 . So anything over 7 felt like a hurricane Force 10 to Force 12. Been in my far share of rough weather in numerous vessel types. However those Landing Craft took real nerve to operate in heavy weather. My fav places were either in bed asleep off watch. or at the helm on watch.
    So looking at this Nordhavn just make it look so easy is so very impressive. I know if I were to win a huge lottery jackpot win. Im definitely buying a Nordhavn. If a huge Euro jackpot win, then its either the 100 or 120. Then again All Nordhavns look and are tough little ships.
    Sorry about the waffling. My back tablets have kicked in big time and I'm floating on my sofa with a redy brek glow and loving the world again and I type and talk for England me OCD style lol.
    Love to own one. A fool can dream.

    • @goodshipkaraboudjan
      @goodshipkaraboudjan 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Also worth noting they have a poor rep among professional crews. They're a good boat with pseudo commercial set ups and a very flashy sales brochure appealing to amateurs who want to be "true seafarers" but there really isn't anything remarkable to them over many other boats. The ability to go "on and on" being sensibly handled is not at all an exclusive trait to Nordhavn.

      I'm referring to yacht crews. People who crew lots of boats over the years inevitably end up on a Nordhavn at some point, usually for a longer passage when owners hire a crew to supplement themselves on the smaller boats or part of a permanent crew on the larger models.

    • @goodshipkaraboudjan
      @goodshipkaraboudjan 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      KriZm KrOp So far as an actual professional, Nordhavns are as well built and spec'd as any other Chinese built GRP boat, their difference is covering multiple markets. Not anything solid so far as being better in them. They're a good boat just not special. The brochure seems to do all the work.

      t's a guy on a boat filming the waves with his phone. Nothing more. It isn't a Nat Geo documentary. The fact that it is vertical is such an insignificant thing that it's comical people need to comment on it. Are you that caught up in criticizing that which doesn't conform to your expectations? Question for those who have experience in such matters - is it easier in rough seas to launch the tender from the front deck or from the rear or does it matter? How about boarding it?
    It obviously would not be ideal to launch a tender in seas like those pictured, but if you "had to" which would be better?

    • @denali9449
      @denali9449 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Okay, I'll bite. To your questions; No, No, and No. The bigger question is; "Why would you want to launch the tender in these conditions?" Feeling the need to die? Even if you managed to get that tender over the side and near the water without killing someone or damaging the boat/tender, it would be swamped by the first wave. I spent many a hour in seas like this and worse and never once did I think that we "had to" launch our tender.

    I hate to tell you bud, but if your boat can't pound 40knts with a slight increase in RPM's, you are under powered. oh well. Anyone looking at these boats better be sure to put in the proper power for its size. My commercial troller never had issues with strong winds. You don't want to go fast anyhow, but in those conditions you most definitely will feel blessed with some strong torque if needed.

    • @johnzimmerman9243

      Mr. Fennel,
      I'd like to add that overpowering a boat has very few benefits and lots of down sides not just including the increased diesel weight but transmission, shaft, prop, engine room cooling requirements and etc.
      Hull speed is the square root of the water line times 1.34. Powering the boat to go faster than hull speed is very inefficient.
      It's all mission dependent. If the plan is to tow a large fishing boat as some do in the NW or that extra .15 knots knots is important running WOT, or tankering fuel in bladders, or burning more gph is not an issue, then yes go with some more hp. If not confident of the speed goals of reaching the hull speed, then error on the too much hp side but realize the downsides. These days this is not an art as some marine "experts" proclaim, it is science but so few seem to know how to do the math.
      Its always an issue finding the right magic combination, diesel, transmission and prop matched to a particular boat. We could swap in two different ratio transmissions, four props of various pitches, and two engines which is a total of 16 combinations. It would be really cool to get good data from a variety of the combinations but that seems unlikely. And the drive train manufacturers do not help by holding onto data like fuel efficiency maps.
      The bottom line is that my Nordhavn is properly powered. With 15-20 head seas and 35-40 knt sustained wind on the nose, a boat will be slowed by this. I could have increased power, but that's crazy too given the sea conditions.

    •  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      40 knots? It's a displacement hull that's 60 feet long. Maximum hull speed is about 9 knots. At 7 knots you will have close to 3000 miles of range. Even if you installed a nuclear reactor it could not go 40 knots. It is simply the wrong kind of hull for that....bud.

    • @JK-jt5qh
      @JK-jt5qh 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A very solid rule of thumb is to have adequate power to make 5knts into a Force 5 blow. Without approaching WOT, that plant and hull are making 5knts into a Force 8 wind. More than adequate power, and admirably NOT overpowered as so many cruisers are. Also, quite impressive how dry that boat is in those head seas.

      I was on a flattop in the late '80's, & we rode out more than one hurricane at sea. NO FUN!
      I wouldn't try to take a 50-60 ft boat out in sea's like that. There is a reason they issue "Small Craft Warning's" in coastal area's.
      That said, this boat is handling these sea's fine. But I would be heading for safe harbor.
