  • This is yet another upload of this piece, with greatly improved sound.
I began this overture on old Christmas carols in 1992 and tinkered with many times over the years, using some of it independently in other short pieces. Most of the tunes are traditional English seasonal songs, though some are French and one was known as The Portuguese Hymn (Adeste Fidelis - O come, all ye faithful) at a time when the Church of England didn't allow hymn-singing, but the chapel of the Portuguese Embassy could celebrate Christmas in song.
There are two versions of On Christmas Night - one collected by George Butterworth at Horsham in 1907, the other by Ralph Vaughan Williams at Monk's Gate, near Horsham, in 1904.
    The tunes are:
God bless the master of this house (collected in Cheriton in 1954 by Bob Copper)
    The first Nowell
    God rest ye merry, gentlemen
    Good King Wenceslas
O little town of Bethlehem (collected as The Ploughboy's Dream by Ralph Vaughan Williams)
Unto us a child is born
    Past three o’clock
    The Gloucestershire Wassail
    I saw three ships
    The Holly and the Ivy
    On Christmas Night (Butterworth)
    The Boar’s Head Carol
The Sussex Carol (On Christmas Night - Vaughan Williams)
    The Sussex Mummers’ Carol
    Here we come a-wassailing
    O come all ye faithful
    Ding dong merrily on high
We wish you a merry Christmas
