Trying to FIX a Nintendo Switch that TOOK a BATH

  • Hi, in this video I attempt to fix a Nintendo Switch that fell in the bath. My friend GadgetUK164 has already looked at this and given it a good clean with Isopropyl Alcohol. Unfortuantely it was still not powering up, so he sent it over to me as I have spares to swap parts over.
    If you would like to watch the repair before it arrived to me, and MORE IMPORTANTLY what happened after I sent it back to GadgetUK164 then please watch his video linked here • Nintendo Switch - Drop...
    Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things. I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things, so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series. Many thanks, Vince.

    Awesome!!! Thanks for taking a look at this Switch Vince! Glad you were able to fix the joycons and that nightmare "press down" connector - I was worried I had heated it or something, I didn't realise it was easy to put a bend into it like that! It worked perfectly after I resolved that battery draining issue, and I've not seen that error occur with the charge cable - I put that down to additional drying time maybe, or the additional cleaning I did with vinegar and the fibreglass brush around the caps?!?! And as far as I understand it has been working 100% normally over the last few days - just waiting for Stephen to give me another update. Thanks ever so much for your help - Stephens lad is very happy to be playing Fortnite again!!! =D

      Nice one Chris, I was just honoured that you took the risk allowing me to work on it ;-) PDS8475 commented this above and I think it is an interesting diagnosis (copied and pasted).... It sounds to me like you have a shorted cap on the stand by circuit. At a guess it's not on the power rail but on one of the signal paths. This is causing the stand by chip to over work it self which is draining the battery. Ties in with your theory :-)
      I think the joy con drift will come back, so it might be a nice future fix on your channel to swap them both out, as once you take them apart they are very hard to clip back together. I think replace is the preferred option on them. Well done on getting it fully functional :-)

      Very very good PDS, have a watch of GadgetUK164 (Chris) video to see the final fix :-) I am impressed, I had a water damaged phone which was doing something similar so I am now thinking it may also be capacitor related :-)

    • @pds8475
      @pds8475 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@Mymatevince It could well be. You will have to look the chips up to find which is responsible for what I'm guessing is waking up from a sleep state and then check the caps around it. Obviously it wouldn't be a cap on the main power rail because that would kill the phone. But a shorted cap on a signal line can mean that the chip isn't getting the signal to wake up.

I took it apart with my Xmas cracker posi 😂 to find a small amount of corrosion by the game cart! Gave it a clean and bang worked! Over the moon at how lucky I was after watching your video!. But I never would have brought it without your inspiration thank you 👍

  • @thomasesr

    The charger chip is damaged, when you plug it in it draws only 350mAh, which is sloe charge and it doesn't go to full charge mode at 1+ Ah. You need to replace the charge chip. It is probably responsible for the i2c error and the sleep mode error as well.

    • @thomasesr
      @thomasesr 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The charge chip is the most likely to get shorted in case of water damage because it is the first thing that has a conection to the battery

    Hi Vince well done great vid. Just an FYI, IPA will deteriorate carbon film tracks like those used in potentiometers and keyboards etc if you were to open up that analog stick or something else and use a cotton swab you would see the the carbon film eroding with the alcohol. and turning the cotton bud black as it pulls up the resistive material.. i would reccomend in future to stick with just a contact cleaner, which is essentially just oil for cleaning, alternatively WD40 works great. As for ultrasonic cleaners, allot of it is down the to cleaning fluid... allot of the cleaning solutions are con-jobs and are just glass cleaner, if it's bright blue or yellow it's just glass cleaner or screenwash i personally use chemtronics stuff from mouser and it works grea. Using IPA is not advisable as it's quite aggressive, especiallly when you introduce heat into the mix and for the points mentioned above, regards

I have developed a... aham... rather non-budget-friendly interest in talking battery-operated interactive toys from the eighties and a growing curiosity about restoring them mechanically. I am also totally blind,. So far the two aren’t mixing well. LOL! My latest find is a Talking Jill doll by Playmates with a slipping drive belt in the tape player. *sigh* The “Crazy” in my channel name is well-deserved. Anyways great work! Vince, I've enjoyed your videos for a few years now but you really don't need to add music whenever there are a few seconds of silence, during the speeded up segments, etc. This video was especially annoying when you were dismantling the Switch due to the music. It's really not necessary, people aren't going to suddenly switch off you know. :-) If anything, the music is the annoying part and often causes me to mute the volume or fast forward. Please keep up the great work with the repairs, you've come along in leaps and bounds since you've started and the content is excellent.

  • @metroid031993

    Hey vince. That 2101-0001 error code is something the i2c system module (the piece of software responsible for managing the standard i2c protocol and the devices attached via it) is throwing. Most likely, one of the devices on the i2c line is damaged/something is wrong with the circuit on it. Things on this line include: the so called "video chip" (it's actually a USB MUX for switching between normal USB and video out for the doc) the M92T USB PD controller chip, a really small 9 pin BGA chip near the battery connector on the other side of the board (it's a battery temperature sensor), and the larger QFN chip that's near the connector on the same side of the board (the BQ battery management chip). One of these is most likely faulty/should be looked into. Otherwise, nice fix :)

    i know it's been ages since this video but .... shorted cap seems to be draining the battery either that or its the regulator ic that charges the battery (seems to be on permanent slow charge ) , and also the 2001-0001 error is a faulty sdcard problem, it's usually sorted by changing the sdcard OR factory resetting the switch.

    error 2101 001 refers to an internal hardware failure with the docking connection or if the console isn't getting enough power to the docking station or docking connector on nintendo's site there isn't much info about the error except to turn the console in to nintendo for repairs if it keeps popping up the error but that to me is the issue is that the docking connector could be faulty from taking a dip in the tub (the USB C power connector)

It has been almost a Year since that and it's still working fine, but the digitizer went faulty, but you can still use it, but it senses your finger when it's not there. You never know how much it's gonna work. It's the same as Reflowing of putting Washers under the PlayStation 4's screws but it could work a Day, a Week, a Month, a Year, you never gonna know. Water damage cannot be fixed permanently, just in some cases.

    Stick drift is a common fault on the Switch. Ninty use cheap 'n nasty parts. The carbon contacts on the circuit board wear down with time, so the the only proper cure is to replace them; fortunately they are cheap. I've replaced all four of the sticks on our switch and I have another set ready to replace those.

    My brothers switch had the issue where the joy con would randomly disconnect. IPA seemed to only temporarily fix it. I ended up having to take it apart and swap the joy con rails and the problem went away after that.

    Hey Vince, I dropped my switch face down and now the left analog stick won’t press down! Is there any way to fix that?

    Hello does any one know where I can get a good fully working game card board that supports touch as some pins are broken and needs replacing.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hey Vince, I just took my water damaged switch lite to a repair shop and they said something already shorted out and there’s nothing they can do. Do you think there’s anyway it’s still fixable or is it a lost cause?
