- Knife build part 1: Jute Micarta Scales
In this video we will get started on a bushcraft knife build. The design of this knife is very similar to a puukko but would be great as a camp knife or a heavy carver. To get started we will be making some Jute micarta scales. I also talk a little about the materials I will be using for the knife.

We used to get sheets of this at the paper mill to make insulators for electrical panels. Very expensive and it usually was a pink color which is usually not what you want for knife scales. Yours came out great. Thank you for the how-to, Mark

Just made some Jute scales for my blade today as Jute is our history in Dundee Scotland and it was the largest jute manufacturer in the world. Many thanks for the video from Scotland its looking great so far.

Awesome job on the DIY-carta my brother! One thing I might add if I may, contrary to popular belief, O1 is not a very good beginner steel. To get the best out of it, O1 requires a good soak at critical temp. which is next to impossible to achieve w/ a normal forge or torch. A good carbon steel to start out with would be 1084. Easy to heat treat w/ good results. Hope I don't offend w/ my commentary, just trying to help. I look forward to the next video!
Brother I will take pro tips from you any day. I had a hard time finding 1084 at local spots around me. Actually it was like I was asking for them to send me a unicorn. 1084 was actually my first choice but couldnt find it locally. I was able to find O1 all over at a decent price. Next time around I will be ordering 1084 from the US. I have heard that it should be soaked for 20 minutes, 10 minutes, 5 minutes and not at all. I was thinking I would try and keep it at just non magnetic for about 5 minutes before I quenched it. Probably not the best idea but the best I can do with my simple tools. I do know I need to get it to temp slowly and I need to get it in an oven to temper before it drops below 125°. Also heat up my oil a little before I quench. I will take any tips you can share with me brother. Depending on how things turn out I may just send it out for heat treat. But I am hoping to save some $$. After the last build I was hoping I could put this whole knife building thing behind me but my brain wont let me. I have been fighting the urge for weeks.........I gave in. The creative bit in my mind wont let me rest. Lol it just pesters me until I satisfy it.

How tough is the burlap micarta compared to linen and linen and g10?
Not really sure but it is hard as rock! I really dont see it coming apart.

no, the screw is for making a removable knife scale, you don't need epoxy
You can also use drop cloth material for the handle material.
