Spearfishing BIG Kingfish with Rescue Helicopter Crew

- In this video I go spearfishing with the Westpac rescue helicopter crew and we find some nice yellowtail kingfish - I pique their curiosity to bring them up from the wall and Simon gets his first fish. The second dive we head to Coromandel where I get taxed by a bronze whaler shark and manage to spear a big snapper on the weedline.

I would never do spear fishing as I just don’t have it in me but I love watching it. Love the commentary and talk over. Helps me understand what’s going on
Those yellowtail kingfish are my favourite to eat.
Cant believe how good this is, 10 min vid took me 20 min to finish, kept rewinding.
Man I’m overly critical I guess, I watch it and think it’s average af and no point publishing. These dives are far from recent.

Cheers great vid. Had couple of big kings rubbin on the bottom of our tinny few years back. That close coulda gaffed one. No gaf so mate tried to stab one with the bait knife an near capsized us. Had bait put it so bouncing of there heads they werent keen. We got a feed of snaps tho.

First time spearfishing for me got the westpac chopper called XD, amazing vid as usual
What happened?
@@AquaticRehabSpearfishing a few years ago got some mad swell coming in and got smashed on the rocks with a couple injuries and got some bronzies come in towards the end. Chopper was called but got picked up by irb and was fine

Another epic vid. Whats the consciousness check you mentioned?
Usually with mammals (not fish) they can appear dead but you touch the eye and get a twitch if still alive (unconscious). With this fish the iki appears too far back so rub the face and grab the mouth to check for a reaction in a similar way, often fish look around if they paralysed. In this case it actually was slightly too far back so the brain stem is damaged but the fish is alive so the knife had to be dug into the same hole and blade toward nose. I see so many iki fails.
Just curious how deep you were, I'm assuming quite deep that's why you brought fish up for your westpack mate
It’s not that deep but the current that your continuously finning into that makes it a difficult dive. I wanted to get him his first king and had no idea of his diving capability at the start. He freedived very well as I found out and was going down past that ledge. However with big schools of kingfish the very first time the breath hold is affected quite negatively and it’s just easier all round for me to at least try to bring the fish up. If it doesn’t work we change the tactic.
