letterman was such a badass having them on when bush was on the show. i hear bush really liked this song lol he didn't get a piece of the song was about him LOL
***** Jonas Brothers, One Direction, shit like THAT is bubblegum pop. Green Day sound very different. Green Day, by definition are pop punk, their music having the sound of punk rock and alternative rock.
Green Day should appear on Letterman one more time before Dave retires. I've always wanted them to have a sit down interview on the show and have Tre go berserk.
I always loved when they were on Letterman. It was so cool seeing an older guy vibe with a punk band I loved. He was like their dad, and it was absolutely great.
We ALL will find ourselves in Dave's place (I am 60). Some of the newest music, we may not connect to. But Green Day offers a clear connection to the melodic and intricate music of the Beatles and other 60s bands. Continuity is important. But so is innovation, whether "the olds" like it or not.
In 2004, when I was 9, I heard a song called Boulevard of Broken Dreams on the radio - the first Green Day song I ever heard. That was a major turning point in my life, it was the first step on a very long musical journey. 10 years later, I've heard every one of their songs at least a dozen times and seen them play a 3 hour set from the pit area. They've honestly changed my life and influenced me in many, many ways. I love old Green Day songs, but this is the Green Day I grew up with, and it will forever be my favourite.
It's actually a Gibson Les Paul Junior, which was a student friendly "affordable" guitar (I still can't afford it tho). It has only one pickup, but still has its iconic sound, don't let the low specs and its simplicity fool you.
Ali Rafiei lol i know the guitar. It's a simple sound, its just an LPJ through a couple marshall heads but, it just proves you don't need to be complicated to sound big.
To sum up some of the negative jealous comments... Green Day does not lip sync. They are actually one of the last remaining true rock n roll bands that are simply "that good live". I've seen Green Day 11 times and they are one of those bands that honestly sound BETTER live. That mega phone effect you hear was done by Billie using a "filter" button switch with his foot as you see him back away from the mic. It simply changes the EQ from the mixing board to give it that high frequency sound to make it like the album. It can also be done in the mix after they play to be added to the TV broadcast. If anyone says they lip sync, or its fake, trust those who are actual musicians like myself when we say thats its a true authentic performance. Whether you like or hate Green Day, American Idiot changed the lives of thousands of people. Its one of those albums you will hear in 30 years that simply never gets old.
Coz they dont add loads of other random ass instruments and effects to the studio version aside from a tambourine here and there but that is all down to Tre. I admire green day for that even bands like Bon Jovi or Ac/dc can't recreate their recorded songs live.
@@nonyobuisness7796Well too be fair, Jon Bon Jovi blew out his vocal chords really early on in his career. Even in the 90s his voice completely changed, but their performances in the 80s were top notch and sounded arguably better than the studio. Billy does also have the advantage of significantly easier vocals to do.
Life is just full of mysteries. I was a kid in high school when this song came out and i watched this exact live and even downloaded it. Little do i know that now i own that bass mike is using 😂
And now fast forward a dozen years to 2017 and it still sounds exactly the same if not even better. Billie Joe's voice refuses to age. Saw them live in Detroit earlier this year and they just refuse to give up, Awesome As F**K performance, fucking awesome band!
American Idiot was probably one of the biggest unforeseen musical artist comebacks of all time. Green Day fucking stormed back into mainstream popularity. It had kind of seemed like they were fizzling out when they never really gained any popularity during the pop punk boom of the late 90's/early 2000's when other bands like Blink were huge. But then the emo era combined with the anti-Bush movement really seemed to create a space where Green Day fit perfectly without having to really change their core sound too much.
omg green day is life itself, ive been listening to them since I was little and hearing them again and again everyday just makes me remember the good old days, thats why green day is the best!
This is actually the first song i heard from them back in the 2004 when it came out on TV. Ever since then i've been listening to them. Comming back to this video, makes me feel like a god.
The guitarist in pink is Jason. He was a touring member of Green Day starting the late 1990's, early 2000s. He became a full member of Green Day in 2012, probably around the recording or release of Uno, Doa, and Tre.
Did anyone notice how Billie's voice went from normal to sounding like he's talking on a megaphone at 3:10? Where Billie says "Information Age of hysteria" then the part with "it's calling out to idiot America" sounds like he's speaking into a megaphone.. I dunno if anyone else noticed. Such a great performance, love this band so much.
+Patriot_Fighter I can do that on my microphone, however mines a cheap one. I lean back from the microphone, go to a talking voice, and put my thumb across the microphone.
This performance is so great, the American Idiot era was the best. It was like the energy they had in the Dookie era mixed with this political sense that worked so well. I miss this Green Day so much, but still a great band and will always love them.
amazing what this band is worth millions and millions. welcome to California. They were not are silly they perfomed. All an amazing business. Hope the they can still hear something
Let's settle this Green Day fight once and for all! After their early days of Dookie, Insomniac, etc. they had American Idiot which was actually NOT pop-punk, but alternative rock, yes, ROCK. They have even said that being in a band doesn't always mean you have to do the same genre, most people don't like that. The fact of the matter is that they grew from their original punk roots to something better. Now you go and buy yourself copies of their 3 newest albums, ¡Uno!, ¡Dos!, and ¡Tre! and tell me that they "aren't punk". Because this is coming from someone who basically grew up with Green Day. I am made fun of for liking it. And I dont care because I know what Green Day really is and will always will be no matter what. Punk.

It's great music from a great band period. most of the sad sacks bitching about "punk and not punk" are people who sit in their parents basement with fuck all better to do and sure as hell aren't in a band out there doing it for real. Everyone who voted for a political party is what he should be singing about. There is no difference between the two. Both are sellouts to lobbyists and the bureaucracy of the U.S. Obama blows ass and continued Bush's legacy down to a T.
Good for him. I have liked Green Day’s sound since high school when they first came out. I also vote Republican. You’ll find the majority of conservatives can get past someone’s political leanings in the name of enjoying art and entertainment. You see, while bitchy liberals are boycotting people they disagree with, conservatives are able to appreciate the artistry and actually, you know, buy things.

Lol what part
John Kerry was on the show, not Bush.
oNegLeEk it wasn't about him. green day keeps saying that dude.
EJ it was only partially about Bush, this song is still extremely relevant to this day. If you look at the current president.
Big green day fan for years but we don't get the letterman show in Scotland or the UK, would love to have seen them on the same show with Bush

Boulevard is my favourite song and I can relate with that
Me too, they were my first concert at 10 in 2005. American Idiot is one of the best albums of this century so far.
Yo también tenía 9 en 2004, pero los conocí en 2009 :3
Si tan solo no hubiera nacido en latinoamericaaaaaa jaja xD

There were so many amazingly well written songs on American Idiot. Hell Jesus of Suburbia is like 10 awesome songs in one

I know right?
P90 equipped Gibson LP Junior + Marshall stacks. Green Day really nailed the rock n roll tone!
You can get them for like $150. I bought a used one on offerup for 50 bucks. Great guitar. The neck is stupid smooth.
Not my favorite GD song but man.... they had killer sound that night..
Keeping rock n roll alive and educating the younger generation about how messed up society and our government is. Love it.
Anybody else die when he said "There's something wrong with their drummer"
me
MEEEEE
i did!!
"Something wrong with the drummer" doesn't even begin to describe Tré cool
Yep I did
"And there's something wrong with their drummer.. *Trè's insane look face* That's all you need to know" lol one of the best of Green Day's moments. :)
It's amazing how much this song was not only of its time -- but also incredibly prescient.

Billie's guitar is so beautiful
It's a Gibson Les Paul Junior
They're one of Gibson's cheapest guitars, not cheapest but still in the list.
+Ali Rafiei he also has a signature Gibson Les Paul Junior I bought one just cause of Billie Haha
Ali Rafiei that may be true but all of the LP jr's that he uses before his signature model came out were vintage and were made in the 50s
this energy on stage you cannot find it in any other band for sure.easy and spectacular.
2:56 jason:"shit i left the stove on..."

The ones who dislike them are right-wingers because they're too dumb to realize the song is about them specifically.
