Almost one year of work, but 1998 season deserved it!! I really hope you will appreciate this video, guys 😊 Available subtitles in many languages 🇬🇧🇮🇹🇩🇪🇫🇮🇯🇵🇪🇦🇫🇷🇨🇳
I remember this as the first full season I watched on TV as a 12/13 y/o kid, loads of coverage on BBC for the Rally GB. I've loved this era of rally car ever since. Wonderful video, great work. Now to show it to my kids 👌🏼 thank you 👍🏼
Everybody always gloats about group B, but do these cars seem slow to you? Absolutely not. World of rallying got better thanks to the self destruction of Group B.
That Evo is still, arguably, one of the best looking rally cars. Ever. Even as a McRae fan, that Marlboro livery proved those colors work on just about any race car. Wasn't it the first time the driver's name was on the car, years before McLaren tried it in F1?
@@svenmartin840 They mean the tobacco 'brand' - "Tommi" replacing "Marlboro" prior to "Mika/David" replacing "West". Though it was in the same season (1998) that both Mitsubishi and McLaren did it. In terms of any driver name though, F1 had it in the mid-60's, so a little earlier than '73.
I love the fact that this is perhaps the most memorable WRC season, both due to how exciting the whole season played and the fact that these cars enjoy loads of video game fame, even the Kit Cars.
98' was a crazy year that's for sure. But with Tommi & Mitsubishi having to deal with more restrictive Grp A rules & a new car on top of probably one of the most competitive fields of drivers in WRC history their victories in drivers & constructors championships were well deserved.
I remember watching the last rally with my dad. I was buzzing for Richard Burns, gutted for Colin and then heartbroken for Sainz. I was so young that i didn't have a favourite. But old enough to understand the champsionship and how it worked.
I have followed Rallying since 1975. And Sports Car Racing. When the Wild World Of Sports covered the East African Safari and I saw the 1975 Lancer. And I said Dad our car is on TV. And I hope the WRC comes back to the United States. Because it should be on it. Because if you look at the Sports Car Racing. Acura vs Lamborghini came down to two points. In Grand Touring Daytona. And recently last year with the Last year of the Daytona International Prototype.
Born in 1998. Wish WRC was like this now. Some hellish names through this year. I will always say it, if Colin did not pass away, Rally would be completely different now
Indeed for instance all todays drivers with bags of titles are only relevant to todays rules and distances rallies of yesteryear were proper much longer rallies that in my opinion would probably not have any of the current title baggers win them
I just checked about "toyota castrol belgium", and yes, it was part of TTE, so Loix the races he took part in 98 was inside of TTE despite having a different name the majority of them, only officialy in the TTE for Catalunya because he was point scorer.
Also I swear they ran some of the Monaco GP circuit or the roads around it didn't they for the rally in I want to say the mid 90s. Did they do that and when did they stop doing it? I swear there's a photo of Liatti in the Subaru sliding around down by what would be the Nouvelle Chicane on the GP track, or am I thinking of another rally with waterfront scenery?
Yes, they used sections of it at the Rallye Monte Carlo of 1997. The Start was as usual in Monte Carlo itself with the ramp in Casino square; but SS1 was run round the harbour, using roughly 2/3 of the F1 circuit
@@OsellaSquadraCorse Oh neat, so the photo I had of Liatti sliding around through Tabac wasn't just a fever dream, sweet. Now I need to go find more info on these stages though too
Thank you for the great report from the past. I had already forgot how we were holding breath for tommi in -98 here in Finland. Crazy season alltogether. Couple of things i remember well were that rally officials KNEW about the oil on the track at GB rally, they just didnt bother to inform anyone concidered, like the DRIVERS. Second is that Mäkinen answering the phone during tv interview went viral in finland (before internet ofcourse that needed a lot more than today)saying over and over MITÄ?MITÄ?. The MITÄ stuck in finnish language so hard that we still use it today as expression of utter disbelief. Mitä means what, but Tommis WHAT? with central finland dialect on tv was forever printed on Finnish language. Great season. Great drivers. Great memories.
42:49 again not even true, its known the reason why engine of Carlos failed, a piston rod failed, a badg of them was defectuous, Auriol next day doing some show testing for press media had the very same failure related to a piston rod.
The cars were not the fastest that the engineers could dream up, if left to their own devices. What made this period good was the drivers. Over driving a limited traction car is what makes rallying err Rallying. Hope the new regulations for 25 reflect this.
Who didn`t try to keep full throttle in those cars when Colin McRae rally game appeared on the PC of those days!!!Amazing game, seasons and memories!!! Good job, great video!!!💪😎🏁
@@firstnamesecondname8280 there is Always the "super thanks" button 😛 unfortunately this video was a huge amount of work and has only 50k views, so for the Moment I don't have any other review in project 😔
I used to work with a guy I thought looked just like the bike copper that pulled Tommi over leaving Millbrook. After he'd left for another job someone told me it actually was him! Wish I could have asked why he stopped him rather than just giving him an escort.
It was FAR from terrible, the Corolla WRC was one of the fastest cars during that era, some privateer teams used it as far as 2002. The major issue was the reliability

A wonderful collab

You are correct. It started in NASCAR first then Trans-Am,and Can-Am,Then IMSA. Then F-1 in 73 or 74.

23:40 "Why my engine and not Mr. Kankkunen?" I'm so glad you included that clip, it's so good XD

Honestly this part confused me but now i understand it XD
I find it incredibly sad that that specific Corolla WRC is barely in any newer rally games
I love the fact that this is perhaps the most memorable WRC season, both due to how exciting the whole season played and the fact that these cars enjoy loads of video game fame, even the Kit Cars.
Shame the WRC Corolla doesn't get much video game fame tho :C ... it might've been disappointing but it's still one of my favorite WRC cars
First thing that came to mind after seeing the line-up was Sega Rally 2

Truly the golden era of rally, in my opinion
Incredible video! Fixing the control arm with a fucking rock BY THE DRIVERS goes so hard.

Ciao Rub, complimenti per questa altra bellissima storia. Immagino che hai avuto il tuo bel da fare. Buon weekend e grazie per la pubblicazione 🍀🏁❤️
Great effort putting this together, I'll be watching this again
I think FIA really ought to study the '98 season hard and do their best to replicate the conditions that led to that.

move that lil corolla im glad lots dont know about it
Great video. Thank you!
Whats brilliant is Sainz Sr still competes to this day in the Dakar
The Sainz are extremely competitive, and also super nice guys
McRae was robbed by the poor reliability of the Subaru this year. Not quite as dramatically as Sainz though!
Colin mcrae got mastered again 😂
With 1.25 speed its perfect 👌

Even as early as the third round, Mark James on the BBC said 1998 looked like being a vintage year. He wasn't wrong.
This was wrc.... Miss those days 😢
Such a legendary season. I had it on VHS and have vivid memories of select moments. The VHS died from too much watching lmao.
Nice video! Thank you for the subtitles. I really like those ingame car specs when a new car is introduced. 😄

WRC 1999 next?

Anyone knows what game these car selection screens are from (around 2:48) ?
V-Rally 99 for N64 ("99" only in the title, the game is based on season 1998)
