      Paul Peck Are you just using drywall mud in your pan?

      Well done. I can tape rock with the best of them on a smooth surface but never worked with knockdown. Good instructions on how to deal with it.

      New to hanging drywall and textures. Question ??? Can you put paint or kilz in your mudding mixture for thinning it out to roll on the ceiling so you don't have to go back and paint it later.
      Thanks in advance

    Your Video saved my Butt !! I had a tree go thru my roof and I had to replace about 75 sq. ft. of sheetrock. Sadly no insurance so this was all on my dime, im a welder and not savvy with house projects, well lets just say I had to learn. Everything turned out great, I really appreciate this video, same texture as my house and I figured it out with your help and this sponge. I sincerely Thank You ...

    I ordered the sponge and Lexan tool to drag the knock down texture and used your techniques and it worked like a charm.
    I have been doing renovations for a long time but have never been real good at matching texture till now.
    This idea works great for small repairs where you don’t want to skim coat the entire area and retexture

    I've been in home remodeling for years, and that's a wonderful technique for duplicating a knockdown texture without having to break out a hopper. 👌🏻

      Thank you Papa Joe! I'm telling ya... For small knockdown texture repairs the knockdown texture sponge can blend the texture into the existing so much better than a hopper or texture rig. I've always got my knockdown texture orange peel texture sponges in my drywall repair bag for sure! Thanks for stopping by, -Paul

    Thank you for this very helpful video. I'm definitely going to try this method. I hate textured walls. They're such a pain to re-texture. After our bathroom renovation, we filled and smoothed the walls using joint compound. The smooth walls look awesome! I wish I could remove the texture from all the walls in the house but that would be too labor-intensive. Your method of repair is much appreciated.

    Man, I am a DIY everything guy. i have fiddle around with different methods of applying repair knockdown, but I will say….. you are the man! That is the absolute cleanest application of repair knockdown I have seen to date. Homax and their overpriced rattle can spray texture will never again be in my hands again! I truly wanna thank you for your video. Oh, you know I subscribed to your channel, can’t wait to see your other videos when time affords me.

    Nice video. Having done a LOT of repairs working in apartment maintenance, trying to match texture was one of the hardest things to do. I found that matching a knock down that was previous painted with several coats required a light wipe down after the knock down with a damp cloth when the repair was almost completely dry. This took the hard edges off and matched the older painted texture better. Also I found that the canned texture didnt match any texture very well. I found that using a texture gun would do a MUCH better job applying mud to use in matching any texture.

    Hi Paul. Great video. I'm always so grateful for those who share their expertise on TH-cam--thanks for that. I've had some success duplicating my home's texture, but I always get hung up on the border of the patch, where the tape joint meets the painted wall. I always seem to get a smooth, flat or otherwise mismatched transition. Any suggestions?

    • @PaulPeck
      @PaulPeck  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Appreciate that Eric! I'm glad TH-cam provides this platform for all to share all kinds of great information. As far as the texture being a little light a the corners. To get a more consistent texture in the ceilings corners.Try using some blue painters tape and 12"-16" masking paper on the wall. That way you won't have to worry about getting texture on the walls. Hope that helps, -Paul

    Great vid. What kind of mud are you using? Every time I do knockdown repair there is always a shade difference between my new knockdown and the original. Paul, I am renovating my husbands inherited home. Let"s just say his master degree brothers convinced them to by a home for $90.000 and when I started tearing down walls and cabinets, found out that it was originally a 4 room coal miner shack! They had rebuilt around it in 1950! The only way I knew that it was a older home was because of the bathroom. I had to go all the way down to the floor joists to put in a new floor. To my surprise, the floor was laid not straight but diagonally! I was raised in Quincy, Illinois where there are lots of homes that predate 1930! So, I knew then that my husband had been taken for a ride by his own family! IMAGINE! Here is my question: I had a guy patch up some drywall holes, that I thought I couldn"t do. He supposedly does this for a living. I have done everything to a house from roofing,painting, wall papering, even re-done hardwood floors! the patch he put on my living room ceiling has so many mud grooves , that I know its going to cause a damn mess! What can I do to take out the grooves and then do the job myself! I have been waiting on him for 4 weeks to come and finish the job! I believe I have given him his time due!!!! I have scraped the popcorn off all the ceilings,and painted the rooms , plus ship-Lapped a wall, so I think I can repair sheet rock! Can you help me, PLEASE!!!!

    • @spencercolgan

      No. You need big openings in the sponge to do this. If you can’t find one I suggest that you buy what is called a “sea sponge” and get yourself a large drillbit and bore out Large holes in that sponge.

    Awesome video, thank you. All my walls have this texture and in need of much repair. How thick should the texture be?

    • @PaulPeck
      @PaulPeck  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you Becky! As far as your question on how thick the knockdown texture should be? That all depends the texture you're trying to match. Typically when I use the sponge to match knockdown texture, I just add a tiny bit of water to make the joint compound nice and creamy. Then you can adjust how thick the knockdown looks by how long you wait to knock it down after it's been applied by the sponge. The sooner you knock it down the thinner and more flattened out the texture will look. The longer you wait, the thicker the texture will be. I recommend do a practice area either on a scrap piece of drywall, cardboard or in an inconspicuous area of the room like a closet or something like that. Hope that helps. Good luck with your drywall repairs and texture matching projects. Let me know if you have anymore question along the way, -Paul

    Was this ceiling painted? My ceilings are plaster over chicken wire and concrete substance. House was built in the forties!!! I have some cracks too.

    Cool vid i..now I see how it’s done ...I’m having my ceiling worked on cause it was started to look uneven ..had my handy man out beams to raise it up ..so he cut through the drywall and will put back that texture ..greetings from California

    Hi there Paul, is it possible to do the entire process twice... Add joint compound, texture and knock down a second time? I noticed after I was done that I didn't apply enough compound and can still see some of the patch work. :/

    • @PaulPeck
      @PaulPeck  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Danilda, yes you can do a second round of texture with the sponge.👍🏻 Maybe just try and add only as much as need then lightly go over the entire repair. I hope this helps. Let me know if you run into any questions along the way. Thanks so much for watching and subscribing! -Paul

    Can you do knock-down texture ovef a "prickly" wall texture? How was built in the 70's and has a horrible bumpy, prickly 🤷🏼‍♀️ texture.
