This type of joy and relief and love is infectious. Apart from Lightning fans (understandably) and a couple of stubborn rival fans, I think everyone was somewhat hoping for this outcome to see these sorts of reactions. And to end a 19 year series drought in OT on the road from a goal from the hometown kid turned captain? How can you not be romantic about sports?

@DK25 I think vassi needs a break. That team has played so much hockey over the last few years. Having a decent length off-season might help them. I’m a Canes fan here (live in Raleigh, NC), but the Leafs are my “second” team due to lots of family in the Toronto area and Ontario in general, who are all Leafs fans. After having a moment to digest what was probably one of the top five most memorable games in the 21st century last night, and the history described above, here are some observations:
    1. Hockey is a blue-collar sport. Lots of hard work, and I believe the Stanley Cup is the most difficult championship in all of pro sports, hands down. Lots of reasons…try to change my mind if you wish.
    2. Both of these teams are very fast-paced and highly talented teams. You can win in the regular season with gifted players, but that is NOT enough in the post-season. Will beats skill. A good example of this was back in 2019 when all four wild card teams won their series that year, I believe, because they were already in playoff mentality just trying to get in. The top teams often hit cruise control during the regular season and then lose their edge in the playoffs. Additionally, only ONE of the top 10 goal scorers in the regular season and only THREE of the top 20 point scorers in the regular season made it past the first round that year. No single player can CARRY his team through a game, unlike in other sports.
    3. Sheldon Keefe managed to push his team past the first round and he was successful in doing so because he instilled consistency and a work ethic. Stick to the game plan, the results will come. This series it was apparent to me that the Leafs just outworked the Lightning. They wanted it more, and they never gave up even with the, well, terrible start in the series. But they slowly turned it around with consistency and work ethic. It was beautiful to behold. By game 6, the Bolts were spent, beaten down, no longer winning battles against the boards, spending most of the time in their end, repeatedly icing the puck, trying to stave off the inevitable. They endured an unrelenting attack for ½ an OT period until they finally broke.
    4. Enduring 10+ years of Maurice, Wilson, Carlyle, Babcock…none of which could make the team gel, was painful. Particularly the Babcock years…he was quoted as saying something to the effect of “trying to outwork the other team won’t win because they are also trying to outwork you”. IMHO that is why he is no longer in it as a head coach. Babcock created discord in the locker room and was not respected. Even though Marner and Matthews had breakout scoring years, their prior coaches don’t understand TEAM like Keefe, Tavares have taught this year’s Maple Leafs.
    Well done Toronto Maple Leafs!!
P.S. You are an awesome person, Steve. I absolutely LOVE your videos and you have an AMAZING sense of humor. Take some time to savor this moment because you more than deserve it.

Hockey is not a blue-collar sport for a number of reasons. Sure, it can be cheap for small town kids to play the game but for most the gear is very expensive and for a growing kid replacing and upgrading gear is expensive. Look at the background of many players in the NHL, they are generally middle to upper class. Why? Because their parents could afford hockey camps, gear, and travel for their sport as well as instilling in them the same values that made them successful and higher economic class in the first place. There are some exceptions of course, there are a lot of players from the boonies because ice time is cheaper but even these people are generally not from the dirt poor and would be considered middle class locally.

As painful as this loss was, I can’t help but smile seeing Steve and leaf’s nation so happy after winning this series, after waiting what has felt like a lifetime I’m sure. They played one hell of a series. A well deserved win. The bolts are tired and this long offseason will be good for us. Great series Toronto, now do us lightning fans a favor and go kick Floridas ass!

Old Boston hockey player, I played a week tournament in Toronto as a bantam in 1976, best experience of my life, great win leafs fans, now it's 10:00 am Sunday morning and I'm more nervous than Cam Neely right now about tonight's game 7, but ce la vie, whatever will be will be.

I had the exact same reaction Steve had in 2009 when the Bruins finished off the sweep of the Habs. I hadnt seen the second round in 10 years at that point. Makes finally winning worth it

We‘ll see you in round 2.
I LITERALLY HAD GOOSE BUMPS when Steve said that.
I‘m a DIE HARD HABS FAN. Been 1 since ‘75 so I‘ve seen greatness.
Last time I felt this way was when the Habs won the cup in ‘78 against the Bruins. Watched it on CBC, and as the Habs were parading the Cup on the ice, the CBC played, “WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS.“ It was the first time I heard it played, and watching Steve REJOICE brought me back to that moment when an 11 year old kid felt that all was right in the world. Serious congrats to the Leafs for making it to the 2nd round, and to you Steve... “WE‘LL SEE YOU IN ROUND 2!“ LET‘S GOOOO!!!

My two hopes for the Leafs this year were that they'd either lose the first round for the jokes or make it to the finals and lose to the Oilers. I prefer the result where leafs fans get to enjoy the playoffs. Get after it boys, game 7 against the Oilers would set the country on fire. I hope both teams can make it there and give us the best hockey we can ask for along the way.

I’ve been watching you since 2011!through all the ups and downs! I’m so incredibly happy for you man. You’re a great hockey personality and genuinely make the game more fun every time I watch your content. Thanks for all the memories! Oh and the 19th pick in the draft for the Blackhawks! Oliver Moore baby! Never thought Tampa would lose in the first round after adding Hagel. Gotta love those stipulations!
