If you are poor and don't have a car ( as pointed out by Fergus ), do not worry. SNP Jenny Gilruth said. " poor people don't usually drive cars. " Yes, poor, that's how the SNP/Greens want to keep us.
Years ago a scheme for pop bottles / can / milk bottles were on a return scheme it has been cancelled many times and won't last this time !!! Just another fad !!!
Its a crock of nonsense. Ill thought out and even if we ever get round to thinking this through properly we will only find it is as said nonsense and expensive nonsense at that.
It will be extremely expensive if we don’t because the rest of Europe is don’t it and going live on DRS so, our rPET will not be available nor CAN and the customer will pay heavily because every producer has to use recycled content as part of the EPR act .
Good to see a well thought through reply by Murray Maclean. It's basically everybody else who's wrong apparently. Nothing to do with a poorly thought out scheme with bigger holes than the ferry's that haven't been built
Maybe Biffa or who ever the curb side collector is will separate them and take your 20p s . That’s what curb side hope you do as your down 20p they are up 20p . Good business if you can get it.
Where does the material go that is not reclaimed ? Exactly thrown out into the environment? As for taking material let’s go to the extreme in most weeks Asda for instance could have as much as 10000 customers or more ,buying x amount of returnable items ,so 1 . People will require to bag or store the items , and people being lazy , will take the items and dispose of them in their nearest shop , why ! Most large outlets normally are some distance from their homes , so people will to clear their empties take them to their nearest shop , usually a small corner one , so out of 10000 plus Asda customers how many will do this ? Say 25% as many people might have 5 to 10 empty containers to return ? That could be 25000 going into the wee corner shop ? Of course slater by name & slater y nature will say no way , but the reality it is possible to happen or even a higher number , two faults here 1 . Does the machine/ shop have the money available to re- fund it what happens if the machine(in some cases) is full ? It breaks down ? The fly boys of the village know it’s full of deposit money ? Vandalised to get to it , a new machine or major repair required costing Hundreds ? Who pays for the repairs , a technical fault happens at weekends ? Who pays for repairs ? The further into the country that these machines the longer time it will take for repairs to be made, if this means less vehicles and council workers, fuel etc, are we getting a reduction for money by reducing the poll tax ? Basically she is an arse and an overpaid one at that , the snp and the greens are causing disasters owing to their stupid ideas that you would think were put forward by inmates of a lunatic asylum,
I try to get things in bulk via transport ( I don’t drive ) so how will I get my 20p’s back? I’m glad it’s going to a rich private company who don’t have to declare the top knobs earnings , oh the joy

Yes but only a small % get back to the food chain . Really it’s about up cycling material and down cycling, which is low value use of high value materials.
This is up to the producers and most will put a mark on the label to distinguish what is sold on both sides of the boarder, but in reality.. it could be a opportunity to make 20p if a producer does not place the mark on the label but it is a producer responsibility and cost to the producers not the tax payers
Never answered the question AGAIN! The unclaimed money should be going to charity. It is not Circularity Scotland's money to keep! This alone should be putting the brakes on until this matter is satisfactorily resolved.
Anyone thinking of holidaying in scotland make sure you go well stocked from the south of the border then return bottles, etc, before you leave, quids in
It's another failer for the SNP government not thinking of anyone except for the £s to replace the money that's been wasted on something else like ferries.
@clive mark Also how is a deposit return scheme stupid? It makes complete sense to me. Sure there are some issues that need ironed out but it is not a stupid idea.
84 million people in Germany recycle 98% of glass,CAN & PET , it appears other countries with a return to retail model can cope . Only saying your objections aren’t genuine but need research .
We had DRS in the 1950-70s and it worked well ,but the Tories and their big supermarket friends wanted to change the playing friends and the Tories where then as crooked as they are now . Out went milk bottles , lemonade , jam jar returns and drinks bottles. So all the dancing about a scheme that will reduce waste is a good thing , only idiots or those with a self interest would draw a sword on it . If you can take the time to go to the outlet to buy it surly it’s easy to drop off the empty one, or is it some people are just to thick to see the advantages.
Years ago it was mostly lemonade and milk bottles that were recycled. The milkman lifted the empties when delivering the fresh milk to the doorstep. The lemonade bottles were returned either to the local ice cream van or the local shop. Jam jars, beer cans or bottles were binned in the same bucket as other rubbish. Times have changed with cans being sold on a massive scale compared to years ago. Pubs had mostly glass bottles to return, now it’s hundreds of cans after a weekend opening. It’s going to increase the cost of a case of soft drinks by £4.80, if anybody is disabled or housebound and gets their groceries delivered, how are they going to return the empties ? Most litter around the countryside and towns is from people who buy a can of juice, or those energy drinks while wandering around. Do you honestly think they are going to keep a hold of that empty can while out with friends, till they find a recycling point ? No, they are just going to throw it away. Sure it’s a good idea, but the way Slater is implementing it, leaves a lot to be desired. Businesses down south will have to label any product heading north differently. Small brewers and gin producers etc will struggle to meet the extra costs. Why couldn’t they wait until 2025 when a similar scheme will be introduced in the rest of the UK ? That way the whole country changes at the same time, a more sensible idea. Slater is just on an ego trip similar to how Sturgeon did things. Trying to bulldoze ideas through, causing more and more problems than there should be. The bottom line is, most people who already recycle by putting their cans and plastic bottles in a certain coloured bin at home, which is uplifted by the council, will probably use the recycle machines. The ones who throw single cans, glass or plastic bottles away after drinking the contents outside, will probably continue to do so. You’re certainly not going to see young ones hanging about with empty cans or bottles, holding onto them till they get home.
the points you miss are, 1) there was no additional charge on cans and bottles in the 60s like there is now, 2) we already have recycling scheme by councils paid for in council tax, 3) extra petrol/diesel needed to drive to the drop off point, and if they are out of order for any reason means driving to find another, 4) average car at 40mpg will cost about 17p per mile just in fuel, a 6 mile round trip (if you're lucky) will cost £1.02 for one can, if the drop point is much further you'll need a lot of cans to be cost effective... that's not good for the planet and goes against the Greens' mantra, and if you can't see that you're as thick as the Greens and SNP...
Someone take her script away.
Should she have looked into these basic issues before implementing the Scheme
that would take thinking and intelligence, both lacking in Slater, if she was bright she'd have analysed this scheme and binned it...
