Just a heads up, coming from a person who lives in an area where we rely on wood stoves you might want to put some heat shields behind and to the side of the woodstove to cover the walls, it seems very close and once you have a fire going over a long durations all the board in the area around the woodstove is going to expand and contract from the heat and will eventually warp, and if you accidentally drop some fire outside the stove the woods going to be very hot and dry and more potential for a fire, just a thought!!
The most important part of your cabin is this wood-burning stove the way you hooked yours up it’s a death trap. The pipe is upside down. The meal goes on top the female on the bottom so the creosol runs back into the Stove Greenwood will cause tons of creosol to run down the pipe. It’s flammable you need metal between the stove in the wall. The fire is the worst thing that could happen. Please be safe I’m not criticizing you. I’m praying for you and I do enjoy your videos.

Mick, I've been following your mom for a long time and found you because of her. Love that you seem to have your mom and dad's great sense of humor. What I wanted to suggest to you is related to your finances and a possible side gig that might help. I'm sure you've been told your voice is golden. What about doing some recording of book readings. There are lots of places that will pay you for that and it would be a shame if you didn't share that voice wherever you can.

Hey Mick. A cautionary tale from one off-gridder to another. Two subjects on safety, one of which others have already mentioned. You absolutely NEED a heatshield behind your stove. That WILL become a serious hazard very, very quickly if you don't. I would not use that stove again until you get one installed -- whether brick or metal sheeting with insulated backing. Second ... Chainsaw safety. I'm 57 years old and have about 40 percent hearing in one ear and only 70 percent in the other -- attributable to running my chainsaw since I was a teen without proper ear protection until about the last five. (too late). CHAPS and BOOTS. Get a good set of kevlar chaps and steel-toed boots when you can afford and use them. Eventually, if you run a saw long enough, it will try to bite back at you. (I keep my previous chaps - with a big gash across the thigh - as a reminder of their importance and what would have been a devastating wound in a moment of carelessness) Technique: At one point in your video (3:03), you're using the tip of your saw to push against one small branch and then cut it from the bottom, while simultaneously resting the teeth on -- and cutting into -- another branch below it on the ground. Very dangerous. This is sometimes called "pinching" and is one of the most common causes of injuries with chainsaws -- where the teeth bind because they are -- essentially -- being told to cut from the top and bottom simultaneously. It can cause the saw to kick violently -- either throwing the bar up and toward your face or backward and to the side toward a leg.

I would like to add another comment about the stove pipe. As a lifelong Alaskan, I would suggest putting the stove pipe on the NON-snow shedding side. That would eliminate any chance of it getting ripped off when the roof sheds! I enjoy watching your progress!
Yes, but when snow sheds off the roof, since the pipe is on the low side, it runs the risk of being knock off. Putting it on the other wall, without the roof slope, makes more sense. At least for me!
It’s a single pitched roof that sheds to the left while you’re looking at the door from the outside. The pipe is on the side of the roof, not the bottom of it

Every Yooper home I’ve owned had a enclosed porch. A great way to keep heat in from escaping thru the door. Also you’ll be happier storing wood in there, keeping you inside overnight to get firewood. Recommend putting some priority in this before it gets icy cold. Over time your little cabin can grow. Since you’ve put your chimney right next to the door, a porch can only be half as large. Been watching your family for several years now, and Alone. You have a Great attitude, keep your chin up, we will be cheering for you!

Glad to see you're doing well, Mick, especially on nothing but Ramen 🤣 FYI your stove pipe should be black pipe indoors, not galvanized, and it is upside down believe it or not. The male end goes down to allow creosote and drainage to go back into the stove, rather than letting it run down the outside of the pipe and all over the stove. Also, why did you get an interior door rather than an insulated exterior door? I'm guessing budget, but you will want to replace that asap. Sure, there's a few things I'd suggest doing differently, but I'm not there yet, next year I'll be joining you in AK! @Alaska Dreamers sent me your first video, and I've been hooked ever since. @@ianfuller2782 Not at all, that upside down chimney pipe is a major fire hazard. Creosote running down the outside of the pipe and on to the stove will ignite. His stove is also too close to combustible material, it’s a fire waiting to happen.

I had to rewind the video a couple times because it goes past the questions so quickly; and of course the first time I didn’t realize it was only going to be on the screen rather than spoken. The only way I can get to even 1/4 of the TH-cam videos I would like is if I am busy while I’m listening. So I put my phone in a stand while I am doing something like folding laundry, washing dishes, peeling and chopping vegetables etc. Sometimes I’m listening while walking or watering plants. Many times the only way I can justify turning on TH-cam is if I can keep my hands busy doing something else. Bottom line, it would help me to have videos I don’t need to stare at constantly, but rather ones that I can glance up at several times a minute.
When I was a kid in the 70's my dad put a Ben Franklin stove/fireplace in an off grid cabin and it had a grill rack that attached inside it so he could grill in the cabin. Loved that little stove. Great memories that your videos are making me recall.
I live a similar life style to the one your building. Best thing I ever did. The changes in a person and the choices you make are priceless. This life style proves there are far more important things then money and materialistic things . Good uck and enjoy your future

You read a selected piece of scripture that loses it's meaning taken entirely out of context. Best you read the whole chapter and esp the last 2 verses of 16 & 17. We can make scripture fit anything we want if to if we just randomly select verses and quote them to suit our needs. That's not God's intent with His Word. We bastardise it when we use bits to fit our personal narrative. Read the whole chapter and you'll gain a far greater understanding of what the chapter actually means. ❤
Hi Mick, I'm 68 years young and doing as much of the work including interior insulation, trim work, painting, open shelving, installed luxury waterproof laminate flooring - required 6 stitches for that but looking at finished project, it wad so worth it!! I'm currently working on 25' sidewalk to front door of Cottage which is 480 sq ft of living space designed and overseen by me all the way! Enjoy the building process and each day as Life is short and the older you get - it goes by lightening fast so continue to learn and do your best as comfort is key & please stock up on canned goods before winter - Sustanability will get you through 'Winter - Harsh in Alaska! Cabin looks great! I'd be setting your wood stove in the corner to straighten that pipe out. Looks pretty rough all crooked. And you should always do the first burn off outside, minimum of a two hour burn off before burning it indoors. The paint is toxic and will give you a bad headache, snd it's harsh on tbe lungs too. @0:22 Don't treat your saw like a trencher. You'll dull your chain way way sooner if you get it into dirt. Dirt is just organic material and really teeny tiny rocks. A dull chain takes way longer to cut and burns more fuel. @0:45 It looks like your chain is loose. A loose chain can be quite a hazard if it jumps off the bar while in use.

Mick you will learn by your mistakes but learn you will. Suggestion for your safety put a metal sheet to buffer the heat away from the wall by the wood stove, because the wall will get really hot. I do love your woodstove though it is small and quaint, so, where did you get it? Just wondering. Your Q&A is so awesome, and I would love to see that more also. It is interesting what you are doing with your time on your build. You will be busy for a long time on your build. There is always room for improvements both in your cabin and your land. And yet you will be able to take treks like your mom and dad does and it will be so awesome. There is nothing wrong with Ramen noodles, I lived on peanut butter and jelly for a long time because I had very little money. People make do with what they can afford, and they are happy that's what counts. So, stay safe, warn/cool, and blessings.

You are doing what I wanted to do at 18. You are fortunate to have the parents you have that instilled in you the basics and are now allowing you to become your own person. I think I met you one day a few years ago. I had property up the road from ya'll in Olnes East. No matter just to say that I'm glad to see you doing what you enjoy. Keep on keeping on.
Your cabin is looking good. When you mentioned Ramen noodles, don't feel alone. I graduated from college in 1981. Yes! They had cheap Ramen noodles in the 1970's. I ended up being a single parent by 1985. More Ramen noodles. I survived all that and you will, too. Meat and potatoes from here on out....and vegetables.
Me, too! This young man will get through it like we did! Ramen was 10 cents when I was his age! $6 got 60 ramens. That's when $5 was like today's $20 bill. Min wage was $2.90.
You aren't doing the physical work he is doing with the coming weather. His body will start to digest its self. There was some interesting work done during WW II with volunteer CO's enduring starvation diets and being brought back from the edge. PS: I like Ramen but I always add something to it.

Great jobs, Mick ! Some suggestions for shopping your own property. I only started researching these in the last few years. I'm in Talkeetna, so your season for most of these , maybe over. Any berries left ? Fireweed? Dry them to add to Oatmeal, etc. Forage for Yarrow. Can simply tie a bunch of stems together & hang upside down. Suggest hanging outside some where dry for a few days then check for bugs b4 hanging in cabin. Dry it for teas when sick. Make a powder from dried leaves, stops bleeding for cuts & nosebleeds. Rose hips, higher in Vitamin C, than an Orange ! Dry, make different things as you can, or add to morning teas !! Make yourself a dehydrator that you can sit near the stove, or high up where its warmer & out of the way. Dehydration is the easiest way to preserve food, etc when there is little storage space , lack of finances, plumbing, & electricity. Just starting to learn about mushrooms ! Really missed out this year. So much rain that my forest was full !! But they can kill you if you eat the wrong one. Just met a neighbor ( I have been here 3 years), on my road, looking for mushrooms ! Our gardens drowned ! But the amazing Birch tree is truly " The Tree of Life"! I will let you research any of these that might interest you. All great for your overall health. 1. Birch Outer bark is one of the barks they make Aspirin from. Chew on a piece of bark when Aspirin is needed. Also, you know its a great fire starter ! Also it is water proof ! The whole inside of a dead birch tree can rot over decades but the bark will be intact ! If you wanted, you could use birch tree slabs as siding , just chaulk the seams. 2. Chaga for tea. Sure you know this one. Heard your mom talk about it. 3. Birch Polypore Mushroom grows on dead birch. Dry for tea, add honey ,a little bitter. Also , can be used as a razor strap! Good fresh for cuts as well as a bandaid . Find your trees, tag high now for tapping for birch water, come spring when sap starts to rise. Make your taps from dried birch limbs over the winter. Snow will be still on the ground so store in snow bank , drink daily. Last but by far not the least, I recently found out is the Inner Birch Bark ! The reddish brown ring before you get to the blonde wood. Break it off dry in small chunks then grind. You can add 20% to baking flour & it does not change the rising. But heard from a native that they use it 100% & make a flat bread ! Maybe a tea, haven't tried yet. Could just be a seasoning sprinkle to that Ramon , for now ! Lol Then lastly, as you are showing it can be used for furniture that will last for years outside. Inside ,for a lifetime. So when you toil to bring that firewood into your great cozy cabin; before adding to the stove, ask what can you take from it , to build up your food pantry & medicine cabinet. Then that wonderful piece of birch tree can lastly bless you by keeping you warm for a second time. BTW, the foraging & processing from your land, would be great videos. First off I like your videos. I’m not trolling your content to find what you have done wrong. I personally enjoy watching your process and the learning that is happening. I can’t help but point out that the single wall piping is fine in the cabin. The single wall on the outside 7:16 especially how cold it gets is going to give you problems. I know insulated pipe is expensive. It does have a purpose other than protecting combustibles in close proximity of the pipe. It keeps the smoke at a higher temperature until it gets out of the pipe. As smoke gasses cool it forms creosol. You will have to stay diligent in cleaning that pipe continues throughout the winter. Hate to see you have a chimney fire and lose the cabin. Keep up the hard work. The progress looks great. Be safe.

I always loved your mom's creativity. So cool seeing you being creative with your bench. I love your honesty. For the don't cut down trees idiots, trees are a crop, get over it. Chickens where you are will need a little light in their coop to cintinue laying all year long. I discovered from a friend that lives in an are that is closed off when it snows because they cannot get the roads plowed in NY. They use snowmobiles. The light cycle tells chickens to pay or stop laying eggs. I am sure you can find more info on that in a search. I love that you know the Bible. That will help you more than you realize now. We will be praying for you!
When he is financially able, I am sure a bigger solar will come in to play. Chicken can and will lay with lighting in the coop. Not as much a the nature sun light. But Mick can make it happen if he wants

Good job man, so cool seeing it coming together and good luck this winter. Just a tip, it is mushroom season, free foraging in the forest and with that fireplace inside, not an issue drying them on newspaper/sowing them onto a string and hang to dry. Hopefully it makes the ramens better :)
May I recommend a few cheap staples? Dried beans, rice, potatoes, canned diced tomatoes and green chilies can go a really long way on a super tight budget. If you can toss in some olive oil, butter and bouillon, you’ll eat like a king! 😀

A tight budget isn't reality in Alaska, food costs a lot unless you shoot it, catch it, or grow it. I ran into Carrs this morning for a few basics and spent $100 on a few loaves of bread, 2 pounds of cheese, a couple pounds of turkey, and a couple boxes of crackers...

Your inside stove pipe should nest top piece into bottom piece, otherwise any creosote generated will drip down your pipes on the outside at the joints...especially critical on the vertical section directly above the stove. Your outside stove pipe installation looks good! Keep up the great work!
There are a million YT videos with step by step instructions for building a cabin. Be you, you have a poet's soul, pray about it and then do what your soul tells you to do with this opportunity. Your building site is beautiful, your little cabin is coming along, I enjoy hearing from you what your short term plans are, what are your concerns for this first winter and what have you done or need to do to really be ready for the winter you know is coming. You mentioned writing....do you journal daily, if you do would you share some of your thoughts about your life and what you are doing? You are unique and so will what you accomplish here on this channel. Be wise in listening to what OTHERS think you should be doing. I understand you are putting together a product for others and you want to please them but you are unique, people want unique, if you listen to all the complainers and those who tell you to do this and that you will have a mediocre product. All these people who are telling you to do this or that have never done anything like you are doing. I would like to clarify that permits and inspections are there to ensure that people don't run wild and absolutely sestroy every habitat each country has to offer. You never know what exactly happens underground, with the treess etc in your land. For you it may work that you can just build whatever and however, but anywhere else it causes small issues that pile up into gigantic issues when everyone is doing them.

I hope you are successful and your channel continues to grow! I have a few things to offer you as someone who shares the same tendency to value action over analysis paralysis. I grew up with an extremely detail oriented and educated father. I respect and love him, but as a I gained more life experience outside of his influence I began to see flaws in his way of doing things -specifically that he didn't achieve as much in his personal life as his peers because he was too concentrated on setting the stage and executing the work perfectly. I swung far the other way and began getting more done at a lower quality, which ended up costing me unnecessarily. I can see that you are a man of action and that is admirable, but don't let that become pride that blinds you and sets you up for unnecessary hardship. You can indeed do it yourself with no help, but do not reinvent the wheel and waste your resources. *My advice to you is to take the criticism seriously and do the research required to measure twice and cut once -especially when money, safety, and longevity of peak functionality are involved.* Building things properly will be more functional and last longer. You referenced the Bible when you suggested that you do not plan specifically and rigidly for the future (James 4:13-17) and I respect that. I strongly suggest that you read proverbs and consider the wisdom of Proverbs 1:1-7, 11:14, 12:1, 12:15 and the list goes on. I am in no way suggesting that you are a fool -but please consider the meaning of these verses and how they may apply to you if you lean too much on your ability to figure it out on your own! You have the internet at your disposal and a following that genuinely cares about you and would be happy to offer professional insight into your future projects. Just a heads up, coming from a person who lives in an area where we rely on wood stoves you might want to put some heat shields behind and to the side of the woodstove to cover the walls, it seems very close and once you have a fire going over a long durations all the board in the area around the woodstove is going to expand and contract from the heat and will eventually warp, and if you accidentally drop some fire outside the stove the woods going to be very hot and dry and more potential for a fire, just a thought!!

The most important part of your cabin is this wood-burning stove the way you hooked yours up it’s a death trap. The pipe is upside down. The meal goes on top the female on the bottom so the creosol runs back into the Stove Greenwood will cause tons of creosol to run down the pipe. It’s flammable you need metal between the stove in the wall. The fire is the worst thing that could happen. Please be safe I’m not criticizing you. I’m praying for you and I do enjoy your videos.

Hey Mick. A cautionary tale from one off-gridder to another. Two subjects on safety, one of which others have already mentioned. You absolutely NEED a heatshield behind your stove. That WILL become a serious hazard very, very quickly if you don't. I would not use that stove again until you get one installed -- whether brick or metal sheeting with insulated backing.
Second ... Chainsaw safety. I'm 57 years old and have about 40 percent hearing in one ear and only 70 percent in the other -- attributable to running my chainsaw since I was a teen without proper ear protection until about the last five. (too late). CHAPS and BOOTS. Get a good set of kevlar chaps and steel-toed boots when you can afford and use them. Eventually, if you run a saw long enough, it will try to bite back at you. (I keep my previous chaps - with a big gash across the thigh - as a reminder of their importance and what would have been a devastating wound in a moment of carelessness)
Technique: At one point in your video (3:03), you're using the tip of your saw to push against one small branch and then cut it from the bottom, while simultaneously resting the teeth on -- and cutting into -- another branch below it on the ground. Very dangerous. This is sometimes called "pinching" and is one of the most common causes of injuries with chainsaws -- where the teeth bind because they are -- essentially -- being told to cut from the top and bottom simultaneously. It can cause the saw to kick violently -- either throwing the bar up and toward your face or backward and to the side toward a leg.

I would like to add another comment about the stove pipe. As a lifelong Alaskan, I would suggest putting the stove pipe on the NON-snow shedding side. That would eliminate any chance of it getting ripped off when the roof sheds!

Yes, but when snow sheds off the roof, since the pipe is on the low side, it runs the risk of being knock off. Putting it on the other wall, without the roof slope, makes more sense. At least for me!
It’s a single pitched roof that sheds to the left while you’re looking at the door from the outside. The pipe is on the side of the roof, not the bottom of it

Every Yooper home I’ve owned had a enclosed porch. A great way to keep heat in from escaping thru the door. Also you’ll be happier storing wood in there, keeping you inside overnight to get firewood. Recommend putting some priority in this before it gets icy cold.
Over time your little cabin can grow. Since you’ve put your chimney right next to the door, a porch can only be half as large.

Glad to see you're doing well, Mick, especially on nothing but Ramen 🤣 FYI your stove pipe should be black pipe indoors, not galvanized, and it is upside down believe it or not. The male end goes down to allow creosote and drainage to go back into the stove, rather than letting it run down the outside of the pipe and all over the stove. Also, why did you get an interior door rather than an insulated exterior door? I'm guessing budget, but you will want to replace that asap. Sure, there's a few things I'd suggest doing differently, but I'm not there yet, next year I'll be joining you in AK! @Alaska Dreamers sent me your first video, and I've been hooked ever since. @@ianfuller2782 Not at all, that upside down chimney pipe is a major fire hazard. Creosote running down the outside of the pipe and on to the stove will ignite. His stove is also too close to combustible material, it’s a fire waiting to happen.

I appreciate that also! I had to rewind the video a couple times because it goes past the questions so quickly; and of course the first time I didn’t realize it was only going to be on the screen rather than spoken.
The only way I can get to even 1/4 of the TH-cam videos I would like is if I am busy while I’m listening. So I put my phone in a stand while I am doing something like folding laundry, washing dishes, peeling and chopping vegetables etc. Sometimes I’m listening while walking or watering plants. Many times the only way I can justify turning on TH-cam is if I can keep my hands busy doing something else. Bottom line, it would help me to have videos I don’t need to stare at constantly, but rather ones that I can glance up at several times a minute.
I'd say it's time to stop, sit down and listen a minute or two😊
When I was a kid in the 70's my dad put a Ben Franklin stove/fireplace in an off grid cabin and it had a grill rack that attached inside it so he could grill in the cabin. Loved that little stove. Great memories that your videos are making me recall.

You read a selected piece of scripture that loses it's meaning taken entirely out of context. Best you read the whole chapter and esp the last 2 verses of 16 & 17. We can make scripture fit anything we want if to if we just randomly select verses and quote them to suit our needs. That's not God's intent with His Word. We bastardise it when we use bits to fit our personal narrative. Read the whole chapter and you'll gain a far greater understanding of what the chapter actually means. ❤

Hi Mick, I'm 68 years young and doing as much of the work including interior insulation, trim work, painting, open shelving, installed luxury waterproof laminate flooring - required 6 stitches for that but looking at finished project, it wad so worth it!! I'm currently working on 25' sidewalk to front door of Cottage which is 480 sq ft of living space designed and overseen by me all the way! Enjoy the building process and each day as Life is short and the older you get - it goes by lightening fast so continue to learn and do your best as comfort is key & please stock up on canned goods before winter - Sustanability will get you through 'Winter - Harsh in Alaska! Cabin looks great! I'd be setting your wood stove in the corner to straighten that pipe out. Looks pretty rough all crooked. And you should always do the first burn off outside, minimum of a two hour burn off before burning it indoors. The paint is toxic and will give you a bad headache, snd it's harsh on tbe lungs too. @0:22 Don't treat your saw like a trencher. You'll dull your chain way way sooner if you get it into dirt. Dirt is just organic material and really teeny tiny rocks. A dull chain takes way longer to cut and burns more fuel. @0:45 It looks like your chain is loose. A loose chain can be quite a hazard if it jumps off the bar while in use.
His tool skills are lower than expected although 1000 times my skills at 18. I could hammer a nail - barely.

Mick you will learn by your mistakes but learn you will. Suggestion for your safety put a metal sheet to buffer the heat away from the wall by the wood stove, because the wall will get really hot. I do love your woodstove though it is small and quaint, so, where did you get it? Just wondering. Your Q&A is so awesome, and I would love to see that more also. It is interesting what you are doing with your time on your build. You will be busy for a long time on your build. There is always room for improvements both in your cabin and your land. And yet you will be able to take treks like your mom and dad does and it will be so awesome. There is nothing wrong with Ramen noodles, I lived on peanut butter and jelly for a long time because I had very little money. People make do with what they can afford, and they are happy that's what counts. So, stay safe, warn/cool, and blessings.

Your cabin is looking good. When you mentioned Ramen noodles, don't feel alone. I graduated from college in 1981. Yes! They had cheap Ramen noodles in the 1970's. I ended up being a single parent by 1985. More Ramen noodles. I survived all that and you will, too. Meat and potatoes from here on out....and vegetables.
Me, too! This young man will get through it like we did! Ramen was 10 cents when I was his age! $6 got 60 ramens. That's when $5 was like today's $20 bill. Min wage was $2.90.
You aren't doing the physical work he is doing with the coming weather. His body will start to digest its self.
There was some interesting work done during WW II with volunteer CO's enduring starvation diets and being brought back from the edge.
PS: I like Ramen but I always add something to it.

Some suggestions for shopping your own property.
I only started researching these in the last few years.
I'm in Talkeetna, so your season for most of these , maybe over.
Any berries left ? Fireweed? Dry them to add to Oatmeal, etc.
Forage for Yarrow. Can simply tie a bunch of stems together & hang upside down. Suggest hanging outside some where dry for a few days then check for bugs b4 hanging in cabin.
Dry it for teas when sick. Make a powder from dried leaves, stops bleeding for cuts & nosebleeds.
Rose hips, higher in Vitamin C, than an Orange ! Dry, make different things as you can, or add to morning teas !!
Make yourself a dehydrator that you can sit near the stove, or high up where its warmer & out of the way. Dehydration is the easiest way to preserve food, etc when there is little storage space , lack of finances, plumbing, & electricity.
Just starting to learn about mushrooms ! Really missed out this year. So much rain that my forest was full !! But they can kill you if you eat the wrong one. Just met a neighbor ( I have been here 3
years), on my road, looking for mushrooms ! Our gardens drowned !
But the amazing Birch tree is truly
" The Tree of Life"!
I will let you research any of these that might interest you. All great for your overall health.
1. Birch Outer bark is one of the barks they make Aspirin from. Chew on a piece of bark when Aspirin is needed. Also, you know its a great fire starter !
Also it is water proof ! The whole inside of a dead birch tree can rot over decades but the bark will be intact ! If you wanted, you could use birch tree slabs as siding , just chaulk the seams.
2. Chaga for tea.
Sure you know this one. Heard your mom talk about it.
3. Birch Polypore Mushroom grows on dead birch. Dry for tea, add honey ,a little bitter. Also , can be used as a razor strap! Good fresh for cuts as well as a bandaid .
Find your trees, tag high now for tapping for birch water, come spring when sap starts to rise. Make your taps from dried birch limbs over the winter. Snow will be still on the ground so store in snow bank , drink daily.
Last but by far not the least, I recently found out is the Inner Birch Bark !
The reddish brown ring before you get to the blonde wood.
Break it off dry in small chunks then grind. You can add 20% to baking flour & it does not change the rising. But heard from a native that they use it 100% & make a flat bread ! Maybe a tea, haven't tried yet. Could just be a seasoning sprinkle to that Ramon , for now ! Lol
Then lastly, as you are showing it can be used for furniture that will last for years outside. Inside ,for a lifetime.
So when you toil to bring that firewood into your great cozy cabin; before adding to the stove, ask what can you take from it , to build up your food pantry & medicine cabinet. Then that wonderful piece of birch tree can lastly bless you by keeping you warm for a second time. BTW, the foraging & processing from your land, would be great videos. Showing Alaska's natural bounty, that provides sustenance.

First off I like your videos. I’m not trolling your content to find what you have done wrong. I personally enjoy watching your process and the learning that is happening.
I can’t help but point out that the single wall piping is fine in the cabin. The single wall on the outside 7:16 especially how cold it gets is going to give you problems.
I know insulated pipe is expensive. It does have a purpose other than protecting combustibles in close proximity of the pipe. It keeps the smoke at a higher temperature until it gets out of the pipe. As smoke gasses cool it forms creosol. You will have to stay diligent in cleaning that pipe continues throughout the winter. Hate to see you have a chimney fire and lose the cabin.

Chickens where you are will need a little light in their coop to cintinue laying all year long. I discovered from a friend that lives in an are that is closed off when it snows because they cannot get the roads plowed in NY. They use snowmobiles. The light cycle tells chickens to pay or stop laying eggs. I am sure you can find more info on that in a search. I love that you know the Bible. That will help you more than you realize now. We will be praying for you!
When he is financially able, I am sure a bigger solar will come in to play. Chicken can and will lay with lighting in the coop. Not as much a the nature sun light. But Mick can make it happen if he wants

Good job man, so cool seeing it coming together and good luck this winter. Just a tip, it is mushroom season, free foraging in the forest and with that fireplace inside, not an issue drying them on newspaper/sowing them onto a string and hang to dry. Hopefully it makes the ramens better :)
May I recommend a few cheap staples? Dried beans, rice, potatoes, canned diced tomatoes and green chilies can go a really long way on a super tight budget. If you can toss in some olive oil, butter and bouillon, you’ll eat like a king! 😀

A tight budget isn't reality in Alaska, food costs a lot unless you shoot it, catch it, or grow it. I ran into Carrs this morning for a few basics and spent $100 on a few loaves of bread, 2 pounds of cheese, a couple pounds of turkey, and a couple boxes of crackers...

That's a great thought but I'm pretty sure Amazon won't deliver to his door. He'd still have to drive 2 hours to pick up packages most likely.

Your inside stove pipe should nest top piece into bottom piece, otherwise any creosote generated will drip down your pipes on the outside at the joints...especially critical on the vertical section directly above the stove. Your outside stove pipe installation looks good! Keep up the great work!
There are a million YT videos with step by step instructions for building a cabin. Be you, you have a poet's soul, pray about it and then do what your soul tells you to do with this opportunity. Your building site is beautiful, your little cabin is coming along, I enjoy hearing from you what your short term plans are, what are your concerns for this first winter and what have you done or need to do to really be ready for the winter you know is coming.
You mentioned writing....do you journal daily, if you do would you share some of your thoughts about your life and what you are doing? You are unique and so will what you accomplish here on this channel. Be wise in listening to what OTHERS think you should be doing.
I understand you are putting together a product for others and you want to please them but you are unique, people want unique, if you listen to all the complainers and those who tell you to do this and that you will have a mediocre product. All these people who are telling you to do this or that have never done anything like you are doing. I would like to clarify that permits and inspections are there to ensure that people don't run wild and absolutely sestroy every habitat each country has to offer. You never know what exactly happens underground, with the treess etc in your land. For you it may work that you can just build whatever and however, but anywhere else it causes small issues that pile up into gigantic issues when everyone is doing them.
You are a great story teller even in your narration of your journey. Great job young man 😊

I hope you are successful and your channel continues to grow! I have a few things to offer you as someone who shares the same tendency to value action over analysis paralysis.
I grew up with an extremely detail oriented and educated father. I respect and love him, but as a I gained more life experience outside of his influence I began to see flaws in his way of doing things -specifically that he didn't achieve as much in his personal life as his peers because he was too concentrated on setting the stage and executing the work perfectly. I swung far the other way and began getting more done at a lower quality, which ended up costing me unnecessarily. I can see that you are a man of action and that is admirable, but don't let that become pride that blinds you and sets you up for unnecessary hardship. You can indeed do it yourself with no help, but do not reinvent the wheel and waste your resources.
*My advice to you is to take the criticism seriously and do the research required to measure twice and cut once -especially when money, safety, and longevity of peak functionality are involved.*
Building things properly will be more functional and last longer. You referenced the Bible when you suggested that you do not plan specifically and rigidly for the future (James 4:13-17) and I respect that. I strongly suggest that you read proverbs and consider the wisdom of Proverbs 1:1-7, 11:14, 12:1, 12:15 and the list goes on. I am in no way suggesting that you are a fool -but please consider the meaning of these verses and how they may apply to you if you lean too much on your ability to figure it out on your own! You have the internet at your disposal and a following that genuinely cares about you and would be happy to offer professional insight into your future projects.
