  • Patrick Allitt, Cahoon Family Professor of American History at Emory University, discusses "Religion and the Pursuit of Happiness in the Anglo-American Context," referencing eighteenth century thinking on these ideas and their inclusion in the Declaration of Independence. He also addresses the history of American conservatism, and on the enduring conservative idea that government cannot make people happy, even though it can create the political stability and rule of law within which citizens, through their own secular and religious initiatives, can pursue happiness.

I wonder how many people in the audience accepted all of the speaker's unsubstantiated assertions about the culture and religious beliefs of western society. A lot of statements that he should prove before expecting people to accept them. I feel like I will be wasting the next 45 minutes of my life if I listen to this man finish his thought.
