those 20-40% claimed IPC-improvements by early """Leaks""" every single time is just getting old. Yeah sure, 40% IPC in a micro-benchmark only using a single instruction that was improved :P
didnt you hear it yet? zen 6 will also have 40%, just as zen 7.
Anyone following this industry a while knows what to typically expect from one gen to the next without relying on so-called leakers. 15-20% in real-world workloads plus or minus.
It's as exciting as a Samsung Android phone upgrade. Sure, it'll be better than last yr's phone but come on!

if the performance uplift comes even close what is speculated it will be great!
What will be interesting is if the 8600X can trade blows with the 7800X3D, like the 7600X did the 5800X3D in all cases except for those that v-cache was useful in.
I recently upgraded my 3900x to the 5800X3D last year in July gaming performance increased by a lot when I also upgraded my 1080ti to the RX 6800 gaming became fun. So yeah I more t han likely to upgrade when the 10,000 series of CPU and GPUs come out. I game at 1440p

Hmmm... no clock-increase, no core-count increase... Just what exactly is Granite-ridge supposed to be ADDING as value then, anyway? Memory-performance and cache increases could be good, I must say, but it's certainly not super-exciting. I'm also concerned by the fact that the power-budget is increasing, AGAIN - but without a clock-bump. :O That's pretty bad, guys! I mean, it's still lower than Intel, but they can't go on like this. TDP's have to go down.

What I'm reading into this is, AVX2, AVX512 instructions will decouple from Int/FP (ALU) pipelines and move to another logical processor that will be the NPU for AI/ML workloads. The front-end scheduler will then be able to issue AVX instructions on another pipe from the usual ALU/MMU pipeline. This in turn will cause the IOD to have to service another logical unit which could affect memory performance when you run a mix ALU/NPU instructions in a multi-thread workload. Each pipeline will have to be queued to access RAM.
In a typical x86 ALU instruction, data reads are 64bit wide but AVX512 data reads are 8 times wider at 512bit (oversimplifying here.) This is probably what they mean when they are talking about memory constraints and why there is talks of moving off AM5 so they can have double the pins & bandwidth to the DDR5 memory.
EPYC servers chips will probably be even bigger next year if they find they need to increase bus width. Take note that there are many ways to increase memory bandwidth, like increase ram frequencies or bus width or data rate / clock like GDDR6X/7.
The OSes and compilers will also have to be updated to take advantage of the performance gains (and potential power savings) due to this decoupling. NPU with such a high bus width can be run at a slower clock without sacrificing performance, especially if memory bandwidth is the limiting factor.
That would mean the I/O would need a Schulder which would add latency, so that doesn't work.
No. In typical x86 implementation caches do have 64byte (512bit) cache lines and ALL memory operations are 512bit wide. AVX512 is a good way to grab data by cache lines. Furthermore there is already a huge amount of stuff between IOD and front end decoder (like buffers and L1, L2 and L3 caches).
So if the past is any guide, we will probably get the reveal of Zen 5 some time in the summer of this year.

As long as E/P cores are well optimized, probably.
Intel will be using a more expensive but immature N3B TSMC process for Arrow Lake that is sure to give a slight bump in efficiency.
But it’s really hard to tell if it’s going to be work the performance per dollar, because they will have to either sell at low margins or people will have to pay a good premium for that tiny edge.
I think if you’re going for the best of the best for gaming, you’re still going to go for the 16/32 Zen 5 flagship with 3D v-cache and traditional cores with multi-threading over Intel.
That said, Intel’s architecture would need to shake things up to gain more ground to compete to where the consumer can’t deny that the Intel chip is the better choice.
Some variants of the mobile zen 5 with integrated graphics will kick ass even without the dedicated graphics card, waaay ahead of arrow lake.
@@Adreno23421It depends on how far back Intel’s cache holds it back.
If the ladder bud doesn’t make a huge impact over the ring bus, then Intel will be on a marginally better TSMC process with arrow lake and at the least should have superior efficiency for the same or similar performance.
Saying Zen 5 debut on N4P process is going to be way better is nonsense, unless Intel shoots themselves in the foot with some major flaw.

it'll be released when it makes greatest strategic sense for AMD. that translates to launching it around the same time Intel has some major releases
Realistically when 15900k is released if it's even potent to challenge Zen5 non-x3d

Based on rumor my projection for IPC gains, based on the way AMD will test it and give THEIR official numbers is going to be in the range of 12 - 20%. I hope this helps.
The way AMD has tested IPC over the last few years, and this happens now because of how much interest there is in this particular spec, is to run various single threaded apps and give an IPC number for single thread performance based on the avg. uplift when the clock speeds are locked at a speed the new gen and last gen will both safely do. They will then do the same thing with multi-threaded apps AND games to get an IPC uplift for multi-threaded apps and games. I think listening to different leakers talk about Zen 5 it seems like this is going to end up near 15 - 20% for multi-threaded apps and probably a little less for single thread.
There is going to be another good uplift moving to Zen 6 when AMD changes their MCM architecture and it looks like they could be moving to the type of interconnect that's used with RDNA 3 and the GCD to MCD connects, and those are direct connects which is WAY better than having an "Infinity Fabric" which is a fancy was of saying everything has to connect via a type of multiplexer on one of the die, and for Zen 2 - 4 that's been on the IOD. These CPU cores are getting TOO FAST for that type of interconnect and trying to clock that multiplexer circuit faster and faster means more power consumption and it's STILL not fast enough.
So, expect another 10 - 15% IPC uplift for multi-threaded apps and games moving to Zen 6. The cores will be about the same as Zen 5 but the total architectural improvements will make a good difference to the operation of the CPU as a whole. And this is pretty well known that AMD is moving to a new MCM design for Zen 6, it's not just rumor. Power consumption SHOULD come down some by getting away from their infinity fabric.
I'm waiting for Zen 6 and newer MBs which hopefully are far better than 600 series boards.

@@unclej3910 No, I watch different channels. What has been said here about high IPC uplifts moving to Zen 5 is stated a bit differently on Moore's Law is Dead and he gives much lower numbers.

As far as everything else like IPC calculations that's years of me paying attention to Intel, AMD, Nvidia and how they present their products. You can go watch AMD's different CPU launches going back to Zen 2 or maybe even Zen + and you can see exactly what I said, and at the end of their presentations they will scroll a LOT of data about their testing methods, etc....
It's called paying attention to the details.
Anyway that's enough explanation to a person I know nothing about.

@@rodiculous9464 No I didn't say that. How many generations of AM4 MBs are there? How many times did specs change for AM4 boards? What are the speeds for the chipset-CPU link for the different boards. Why is Zen 4/600 series MBs still stuck on 8GB/s for the CPU-chipset link? AMD was the first to get to 8GB/s for that link back in 2019, it's time to move on just as Intel already has and Intel MBs are now better than AMD. You can't have a gen5 NVMe on 600 series board when the port is off the chipset if you want to get the full speed of it IF that disk exceeds 8GB/s sustained. Right now the better gen5 NVMe are pushing near 7500 MB/s. Another 1.5 - 2 years they'll be exceeding gen4 max speed.
So, I'm not willing to upgrade from X570/5800X3D/RX 6950 XT until AM5 MBs are a REAL upgrade from X570 and right now they aren't so much.

I’m not surprised at all because Zen 4 pulled more power than Zen 3 and was less power efficient. The same could be said with RDNA3 as well. Everything is pulling more power these days. However the 4090 and 4080 Super are very power efficient GPU’s performance per watt.

Nice to see the cpu improvements, but we are not in a position where cpu grunt is a bottleneck if u are using zen 3 or later, even if it's a non x3d chip.
I'd rather see more performance per $ in the GPU space.
I really hope in the future, the 800X3D variant will get a core upgrade...imagine 9800X3D 12 cores at a price of the 5800X3D
Doesn't even have to be the 9800X3D - it could use a gimped chiplet with only 8 cores, but an improvement to the core-count in general would be great -- the 9700X being 12 cores could be great.

@kazansky22 cpu doesn't determine game performance tho... you just have to have enough for the gpu you have. Getting excited for a cpu is like getting excited for 48GB dimms or gen5 SSDs.
40% in set of workload benchs are way out of beeing real life representative... Expect below half of that.

Not interesting. Zen 6 will be interesting because of the updated interconnect and probably lower idle power draw.
It's interesting for those still sitting on AM4 and Zen 3 5800X3D. Skip Zen 4 entirely and get a Zen 5 x3d on AM6 platform for a decent boost in performance and extended upgrade path.

I'm still holding off on buying the 5800x3D just for more of an official confirmation. Just going to upgrade my GPU 1st. Hopefully by then, we all will have at least a better idea of an release date for Zen 5 X3D.

it will be a year more or less before most people should think about upgrading - for various reason like wide availability, to avoid new arch bugs, to get the x3d chips and to avoid the early adopter tax - it should be a good upgrade, hopefully amd can deliver volume and avoid issues with wafer contract constraints - they need to ramp to gain mindshare/mkt share. we can hope zen6 brings pci-e v6
Hopefully it won't be same situation like zen 4 non 3D compared to zen 3 x3D cpu.
Zen 4 smokes Zen 3 in anything but gaming and was close at sometimes Intel wasn't a factor either
@@chriswright8074 Lol, zen 3 x3d was pretty nice, but yeah, zen 4 absolutely smokes it. There are no conditions that the zen 3 x3d beats even a 7700x, and then outside of gaming the 7700x massively pulls away, that's not even beginning to account for the 7900x or 7950x. Going from a 5900x to a 7950x resulted in things like renders or compile times being cut in HALF. Gaming is actually the smallest improvement that zen 4 got, workload tasks saw wild improvements, to the point in many workloads a 7950x is beating a 13900ks.

@@ZackSNetwork Compression, decompression, AVX512, AV1 encoding, intels ospray rendering engine, the 7950x beats the 13900k at all these things, sometimes by large margins, basically everywhere the 13900k has a lead it's very very small or equal performance. Oh and it does this while using under 200w while the 13900k is allowed to use 350w.

It will be 170w still. Uses nowhere near as much power as 14900KS! That thing uses 440W. 7950X uses 200W in all core workloads and 70W in gaming.

@@Dexion845 Performance in general is actually kind of a draw between Intel and AMD at the moment - they both win and lose in different circumstances. Where Intel has failed is that they've thrown their power-budget out of the window, so their mobile chips get whipped by AMD fairly resoundingly now.
When will AMD start taking ARM seriously? There's nothing stopping them from making a high end AMD ARM SoC with Radeon graphics to compete with Nvidia, Qualcomm and Apple Silicon
Hrrm... well, they did an entry into the smartphone market recently actually - with their collaboration with Samsung - they put RDNA 2.5 into Exynos. On paper, the projected performance was quite impressive, they would have whooped both Mali and Adreno (qualcomm) pretty well, but it seems as if Samsung somehow fucked the chip up, so it was a disaster. I'm guessing they're still contemplating what their next ARM-move should be. I agree that they should do the entire SoC-design themselves though - AMD has the chops for it.

AMD are the kings of hype, as an AMD owner and not biased towards any, i just simply get the best, and AMD always well OVER estimate their actual results, very nit picked 15-20% is what im expecting with this release, and im far more accurate than this guy over the last 10 years, shit son 5 years ago i was mentioning the 15th series or equivalent of intel will be a complete architecture rewrite, maybe i should become the "realistic PC tech youtuber"
I believe it's true. If Intel is going to release a new cpu with huge uplifts in performance then AMD must have something up their sleeve.
I wish AMD would release a Zen 3+ 5950X replacement, 5.0GHz boost clock, 6nm, like (rembrandt?) on laptop. 5% higher IPC, other improvements, etc. A zen 3+ 5950X3D would be even better!

Think that the 9600XT performs like a 7800X3D at it's WORST...that's in Multi-Thread and not only in Single thread. It would be like comparing a Ryzen 7 5700X3D to a Ryzen 5 7600X.
7950x is 500-550 now... A 9950x for 1k?... Thats a no. The 7950x launched at 699.

I love what AMD is doing but i hate their product naming. I mean the only company that mostly does it right is Apple, and then maybe a distant second Intel. Distant 3rd Nvidia. All tech companies are bad.
