This is one of my favorite scenes from family ties. Michael J. Fox just does such a great job with this. He doesn’t over act, a mistake he could’ve easily made, it’s so believable. I love watching actors show off their true talent.
Yes, Michael J. Fox is an amazing actor. I can't imagine what he is going through with this dreaded disease. He has his beautiful wife, Tracy Pollan, and four kids to help him. God bless them!!!❤
I cried cuz i thought he died, than i got to a back to the future museum in Hollywood, guess who i saw, Michael J fox, i was crying of happyness and relief
@@jenpeterson3712 He didn't mean in the abusive sense. He meant as in getting him to reorient himself. If I was going into hysterics or drug withdrawals I'd want someone to slap me too.
I don't think I've seen better acting from any other sitcom than family ties. No other cast i've seen can do comedy and switch to drama so effectively, so powerfully. Even justine who plays mallory, the somewhat dumb a naive teenager, had a cry scene at some point that was very powerful. Great show all around.
I'm gonna go on a lamb and say this particular episode of FAMILY TIES was part of the inspiration for the SAVED BY THE BELL episode titled "Jessie's Song" where Jessie Spano was hooked on caffeine pills in order to stay up and study for a geometry test, and try to keep everything else in her life together.
I believe the creator of Saved By The Bell wanted to have Jessie addicted to speed for that episode, but the network thought it was "too real" for Saturday morning television (I guess prime time was another matter). The caffeine pills were a compromise, if a VERY campy one.
@@torimig2151 Well idk about over dosing but they became dependent on them. What I meant was it wasn't illegal drugs they were taking (that's what I meant by tamed it down) not sure if you really can get addicted to drugs like that and don't want to find out!
Acting was top notch here by all theee of them. Family Ties whole family had serious acting chops. This episode and the one later in the series when Steven was in the coma were the two best in the series. Mallory's interaction with her brother including this episode was top notch. Mallory was extra underrated.
@@joshsemler3221 No. Most of us have knocked ourselves about a few times with no lasting negative effects. I heard Michael say he thinks it _may_ have stemmed from a stunt he did in one of his films, where the stunt went wrong and he almost asphyxiated himself and briefly lost consciousness, but there's no way to know for sure. Most of the time no one knows what causes some people to get Parkinson's, especially when it develops earlier in life. Could be genetic, damage from physical trauma, or a combination of factors.
Thanks so much for all these great scenes! How about the one from the episode where Nick's dog dies, where that guy says to Alex, "How bout them interest rates?"
Remember this episode loved this show this taught me that using drugs is very dangerous and affects you and your family and thanks god I'd never used them amen 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏💯💯💯💯💪💪💪👍👍👍
Yes, I'd like to see the scene where Alex says "Why can't we just go back to the 50's? Everybody was happy!", but I have no idea what year or episode that might be... thanks
One month I was having excruciating cramps so I took some Midol and it worked. Then the cramps came back so I took another dose. What I didn't know was that Midol has caffeine in it and next thing I know I can't sleep and my body is all jittery. I was up for WHOLE ENTIRE NIGHT and I couldn't sleep because my body was shaking out of control and wouldn't stop. I almost went to the emergency room in the middle of the night. Since that happened, I quit taking Midol. Now I take muscle relaxer and drink ginger ale and that helps a little bit.
I swear there was an episode of Family Ties where Alex meets a man in an office who looks just like Jack Benny. He even at one point says he has to call Rochester. Am I dreaming, and if not, do you know the title of that episode.
Gen X got that message LONG before "Family Ties." The Afterschool Special episodes covered drugs, homelessness, prostitution, etc., starting back in the 70s. There wasn't an adolescent issue that wasn't covered. By the time this came around, we'd pretty much seen it all.
Drugs is for weak jerks... I never did drugs etc... I was abused by my abusive bastard father and my family don't want me. I was brought up to be strong and stubborn and I never show how I feel still doing it now and I am going through hell with multiple sclerosis and loveless marriage...
I loved Alex. I thought he was so cool when I was a kid. I even loved his calculator watch. But he was a raving fascist. He left a sleepover because the guy he was staying with was for social security. He was a fan a William f Buckley. When you saw his bedroom he had a photo of Nixon on his bedside table. On the final episode of spin city it had a shot of fox as that character bitching about a junior senator from Ohio. Which means after Alex made his killing on Wall Street he entered politics. Would he have been a dubya “bush doctrine” republican? Tea party? Or friends with Gaetz and Dedantis?
Alex was written as a Reaganomics conservative. I think they overplayed it, but I guess it was to contrast with his liberal flower children era parents. That was kinda the whole premise of the show technically. Which is why I found Alex more irritating than amusing. But occasionally he could break out of his rigid political mould and soften up. Those were the eps that shone imo. It's always best when a character isn't stagnant but reveals layers of personality beneath the surface.
Diet pills? So he was taking caffeine pills??? Not exactly speed, but they're not exactly gonna have ole' APK hitting the glass pipe. Would've made a good Chappell Show bit though!
Diet pills tended to have ephedrine. Which most _definitely_ would have seriously jacked him up. If he'd kept on, he could have even suffered cardiac arrest. They did a very effective episode about it on 7th Heaven. Mary's friend dropped on the basketball court with a heart attack.
As far as I'm concerned... there shouldn't have been a laugh track! Doesn't matter what the drugs he was on .... drug addiction Is no laughing matter! It was funny!
Look up ephedrine/ephedra. Most diet pills had it as an ingredient. Medical dosage has to be carefully monitored. Does act like speed and has the same complications.
Contrived. So he was a speed freak for one episode. Terrible. Like the episode where his best friend since kindergarten was in one episode. No mention of him before or after. So much for episodic TV.
