When doing a project I first make a swatch with my chosen yarn weight and hook. Then, I make one or more swatches with other yarn weights and hook sizes. This gives me a more realistic look at how my intended project will turn out. A shell stitch in a #3 weight yarn with an "H" hook looks very different from a shell stitch made with a #4 weight yarn with a "J" hook. A few minutes spent doing this has saved me hours of frogging projects that were not turning out the way I expected. I also do this to show new crocheters in my yarn group the differences made when we change up yarn/hook sizes with the same patterns. Loving all the great tips:)
I count often. Same as in construction, measure twice, cut (or frog) once. Wreath crocheting or rehabbing houses, my tape measure is my best friend. Love your channel ❤️.
My mind sometimes needs a crochet project, easy 1 row or 2 row repeat. Blankets , washcloths, I had replacement surgery on my wrist, ugh but missed crocheting don’t know how much it helps to relax me. In a slump, I heard time for small projects, always a smile when a project is done, sometimes that smile is not just yours. Never thought I would do that post stitch or go done a row. New grandbaby Daddy requested waves. Granddaughter had shell stitch, rainbow baby got ripple. A lot of wave patterns out there, this one is simple, put you do the post stitch. Yes, I’m doing it. Thank you Sara for being you! Hugs!
Like you have mentioned NEVER EVER give up! I too have that time out space for projects I overthink and eventually go back to. One of those is in my lap currently that I am working on! I think of the Little Engine That Could, I think I can I think I can I know I can! Thanks for all these tips!
Here lately I have been making afghans and lap Afghans for charities. So I find mixing different colors fun. Sometimes I think these are not going to go together and they do. So I guess my hint is to try different things. If it is color combos or patterns. Challenge yourself.❤️
Lately, whatever wearables I make seemed to end up being too large! urr, so frustrating. I have control issues, so I would have tight stitches that caused me to go up a hook size. However, it didn't occur to me that the stroke I had caused my grip to lessen that resulted in my stitches to be very much looser. So now I know to go down a hook size AND check my stitch count ~ saves me hair pulling🙃
The best one I've ever received is DON'T GIVE UP! Yes, we make mistakes and I'm a bit OCD and a perfectionist but I will frog back, set the project aside if necessary and try something smaller or just take a few days to breathe but I won't give up or quit. I tell a lot of people in other groups I'm in on Facebook the same thing. Don't give up and don't quit. Then I will say something positive to encourage them to keep going
Hi Sara! I've missed watching your videos. I'm taking care of my parents, so i don't havemuc hime to watch my videos. My one tip to crocheters, knitters, or any crafter is, "Don't let anyone discourage you." If someone should try to discourage you, just say "thanks for your opinion"
For those of us that work on several projects at the same time is to keep the hook with the project and note to yourself the yarn color and also a copy of the pattern your doing
My favorite crochet tip when making a blanket or a long scarf is to use as half size larger hook for the beginning chain. Move up to the correct size chain after that and your project won’t curl and will be a bit more stretchy.❤ good morning from Arizona
I think the best thing for me was “find something you love to make” however silly it might seem. Another tip is to not work past the pain. I have to remind myself of this one due to arthritis in my hands.
I agree with others who said "count your stitches." I'd also add to examine your work after a few rows or rounds. Do the stitches look too tight so the item will turn out like burlap? 😂 Or are the stitches too loose and gappy? If so, the project won't get better unless you change the hook size! Don't be afraid to rip it out, because you won't be happy with it!
Thanks Sara for your encouragement. My tip is keep trying don't give up crocheting if you make mistake you can undo the stitch do it over. Sara I love your laugh you cheer me up. Thanks Sara for all the information. Have a wonderful day and happy crocheting.
I don't have a tip ( mine was already given), but I do like your idea of putting aside whatever is giving you s problem (timeout so to speak) and coming back to it later.
Sara you are so right I’ve been crocheting for 50 years and am still learning new things. Count count and count again I have had to frog so many things because I just assumed the count was good but oh no a couple of stitches different can make more work than needed to be
My favorite tip that helped me a lot was chain more than you need, you can always undo extra chains, and if you search their are ways to add one or two chains if you come up short. But I love now having to worry if I have the exact stitch count if I have to chain for a large item.
I started out with magazines and would get frustrated because I couldn't find the yarn. But after several years I learned substitution! 😅 been crocheting for about 40 years. Self-taught
My tips are never be afraid to frog. Some folks like to just push past a mistake but they tend to catch up with you in the long run. Another tip is I buy little plastic bags at Joann which I use to make my crochet portable. You can take the bag with your entire project and implements outside, and your yarn doesn't get dirty or wet and your crochet notions don't fall out because there are no holes in the bags. They have handles so you can carry them easily too. They are usually a couple bucks at Joann and well worth the investment. I have a bag for each project with a pouch with stitch markers, scissors, and a tape measure, I toss in my yarn and hook and I'm ready to go!
I learned to crochet at the Y. She gave us the Granny stitch pattern and I worked and worked until the next class and it was wrong. When she looked at the pattern, it was wrong not me. I do the Granny stitch all the time. Love your shows.
I either put it aside for awhile, frog it and decide if 😮 I really want it. I have frogged it partially and turned it into something else. altogether altogether altogether
Tips: As you are learning the art of Crochet, try to enjoy it. Crocheting can be a peaceful, therapeutic, and an inexpensive stress reducer. Know your budget and don't be led to overspend. Practice, practice, practice. Don't be afraid to be creative...after all crocheting IS an art.
My favorite tip is not to be afraid to go up to hook sizes when you make your beginning chain. I find this to really work. But another tip is, it’s your hobby! Have fun and enjoy it.❤
Learning is for life. When I first start something, or before I start it - I'm a research kind of girl. I get books, look things up on google, watch youtube videos. Learn what you can. And then once you start your crochet journey -- my biggest tip is 'Count, Count, Count' Tension, and everything else will come with practice - but counting is key.
Stitch markers ARE my friend 🤣 Especially when working in the round or making a large beginning chain. For the beginning chain (for blankets) I will place a stitch marker in every 10 or 20 chains so in the event I get interrupted (life has a way of doing that 🥹) I use the markers to determine how many chains I have made without having to re-count from #1. Also, I do a mini swatch of my project before I start my project just to make sure it will look good in the hook size I’ve chosen & the color combo I thought would look good. 🧶💕. Thanks Sara!
Stitch markers are my best friends and best tip for me.
I’m a beginner but yeah I love stitch markers are very useful and cout my stitches thank you sara 🙏🩷

Glad you think so!
Hi Sara!
My tip is to always count your stitches and use stitch markers.😊
Yes! Thank you!

I love That. Putting colors together you think won't work, but end up beautiful.
I learned to crochet from my Mom and the tip she told never to give up and take your time. 😊
Count your stitches every once in a while so the project is even.
Sara keep.on going Don't give up God.Bless VA. 👑📖➕️♥️🙌☕️

I tried that and still curled so I do not know what the problem was. 😢
@@Value1lady maybe go up a whole hook size ?
Great idea!!

Clean crochet hook while using. I usually do that when starting a new skein/ball of yarn for large projects and after a small project is complete.
I either put it aside for awhile, frog it and decide if 😮 I really want it. I have frogged it partially and turned it into something else. altogether altogether altogether

Even if you are left handed look for the pattern you like for left-hand it will be easier for you
always measure your item as you crochet.
I write the hook size on the ball band bc I don’t remember if the wip is picked up again.
My tip is if you get frustrated stop and walk away, Come back later or the next day
Im still kinda new so i need tips and can’t give any lol
Count your stitches.
Count count count😂😂
