Hey Henry Just wanted to take a moment to thank you. I’m following close to 30 different photographers ,here on TH-cam & and without any doubt you are one of the most interesting, you explain your work so easily. Hope you feel better soon .
Shadows are to me important too, they add something special to an image, and add depth. Shadows are there in life and are just as important as light for any type of image media, film, photo, painting. they all in some way use shadows. Keep em coming Henry.
Great video! I appreciate that you prefer a natural look. So many ‘world class’ photographers go crazy with saturation and burning to create instant eye candy...it seems like such a trend right now. 🤔
Thank-you so much for that. You’ve no idea how helpful that was ..and you managed to explain it in a way that didn’t leave me feeling like a total thicko. Awesome
Really helpful to see the process mate. I remembered this video and tried it on one I took yesterday and I'm pretty chuffed with the results. Much appreciated 👍
I've been learning Photoshop and Lumenzia since March and it's completely changed my post-processing. Dodging and burning using luminosity masks is the best; I do it to some degree on almost all my photos now, even birds. Really brings out feather detail to a degree I couldn't with Lightroom alone. I generally use LR, PS, and LR again in that order.
Just a quick mention Henry, I’ve just added Luminar 4 to my ‘collection’ of editing suites and it has a dedicated Orton effect ‘function’ and it works surprisingly well. Worth looking at. Take care Mate.
@@HenryTurnerphoto Luminar is like having the cheat codes for editing. I have it, but I only use it for commercial stuff, it's too powerful. I always end up over doing it :)
It's in ON1 Photo Raw too ( hidden in one of the effects tabs) which isn't so AI controlled as Luminar. I bought both but have never taken to Luminar to be honest
Nice video Henry. Seen a lot about the Orton Effect but never really tried it. After watching this I opened up one of my recent images and gave it a go. What a transformation it makes with such a subtle adjustment. Thanks
If we all edited the same way it would be like eating the same meal breakfast lunch and dinner for your entire life 🤯🔫 honestly thats the worst. Definitely pick things out of work flows that you can incorporate in your own and be different, your way more likely to come away with something that you and others will appreciate. Nice edit Henry, heal fast 👊🏻
Henry, we all get health probelms from time to time which stops us getting out and enjoying our photography, give it a few days and you'll be back out there, take care!
Henry, hope you get better soon mate but I couldn’t stifle a little chuckle at the bagpuss photograph! Awesome. I have used PS and LR but kind of object to the monthly subscription you have to pay so I recently switched to Affinity. It is a one off reasonable payment and it’s an awesome editor doing the same as PS and LR rolled into one piece of software. Check it out. To get back to your video I think that the key message to all editing (provided the raw image is good) is subtlety. Over doing any edit is probably the rookies biggest hurdle, so you’re point is well made. Hope you have a swift recovery.
Hi David thanks for the comment, that's really good to know, I've never used any other editing programmes so maybe it's time to take a look at some others
I might be wrong, but I think you overwritten Dodge Burn layer by moving it down under Orton layer. Instead that I suggest you merge a copy of all visible layers into target layer after making Doddge&Burn layer by pressing Ctrl + Alt + Shift + E. And only then apply orton effect to that layer
Mark Denney did a vid on Luminar 4 on 6/24, very interesting. As some others mentioned below he talked about the Orton effect. You can have Luminar 4 as a plugin to your Photoshop. Maybe Mark's discount is still available through that video. Luminar 4 is reasonably priced, and with his discount it's only about $60.00 usd, and you own it, no subscription. Hope you feel better soon Henry!
I use Photoshop. I did look at Lightroom, but comments seemed to suggest it was a waste of money if you already had Photoshop unless you want it for cataloging. What are your thoughts Henry?
Sterling post and image, edits clearly explained; music choice perfect for composition. Hope you don’t have facial recognition locking you out of computer gear 😀. Things sometimes come in threes - neck wound, face thing make two, so careful, mate! Be well.
Thanks so much Paul! Haha yes imagine that - that would have been a disaster! Well the Red Beast broke down the other day en route to Devon so perhaps I’ll get away with that one as a third haha
Ok hope you are getting better! Kind of glad I didn’t bump into you on Dartmoor, you would have ruined my video lol... seriously though I hope you’re ok now and getting back out!
I believe if you edit a photo in PS without having already corrected the camera profile in LR, LR will no longer recognize the camera & lens profiles. I always do the CA and profile corrections first in LR, before editing in PS. You may be shocked how much distortion some camera & lens combinations have.
Hi John, yeah like I said I don't really bother with it that much, but whenever I take a stills on my M50 I DEFINITELY need lens correction or else it's so distorted!!
i found a better tecnique to dodge and burn , you have to work on 50% gray level with overlay method, then brush with dodge and burn tull, this is more accurate because the 50% gray level works as mask
Get better soon mate. Like Tony below, I use Luminar 4 and love it's dedicated Orton effect, so simple even I can do it, you can see the effects on my latest video where I added Orton to my waterfall images, would love you to check out the video.
If this was my image I would remove the thin stick that is to the right of the main tree trunk & curving in towards the tree. Everytime I look at this image my eye goes straight to it & is distracting.
Stunning, love your work. Keep it going and stay safe. 😉
Nicely done mate
Thank you! Cheers!
Wowsers, hope you're feeling better - enjoyable as always, now get back out in them mountains! T 🙂
Cheers Tony, back in action now and yes definitely needing them Fells!!

Shadows are to me important too, they add something special to an image, and add depth. Shadows are there in life and are just as important as light for any type of image media, film, photo, painting. they all in some way use shadows. Keep em coming Henry.
Yes I Couldn't agree more I love them!!
Get better soon!
Cheers Trey!
It's always interesting to see how and why people edit their images the way they do. I hope your health is better by now! 👍
Feel better!
Thanks very much Stuart 🙏🏼
Excellent video Henry.... This will help me a LOT!! Hope you are on the mend soon
Thanks Jim, glad it helped mate. Already feeling much better thanks!

Awesome

I’ve started using Luminar for this as well. Been very happy with it so far. Saves me quite a bit of time.
Ah nice one mate that sounds class, I've not looked at anything different yet but definitely not adverse to it!

Ah that's brilliant David! Yes it looks lovely I feel, I just try not to over do it. Thanks for watching mate

Thanks Stephen 🙏🏼
Calendar ordered!!!
Appreciate the support Tony!

Couldn't agree more mate, so great for us to have our own styles - should be embraced
Excellent stuff as usual Henry, really like your subtle editing. Next job for me is to order the calendar!!
Cheers for the comment Tony and many thanks for supporting what I do with a calendar purchase - I look forward to sending it out to you mate 🙏🏼
Henry, we all get health probelms from time to time which stops us getting out and enjoying our photography, give it a few days and you'll be back out there, take care!
Very true, thanks a lot for the comment mate much appreciated
Very interesting to see your workflow .... nice one.
Oh and good decision to stay home, don't want to frighten the locals do we ....... lol .... 😊😉😎
Thank you! And yes definitely a good idea Paul 😂
I need this as I am truly pants at editing woodland images. Thanks
Glad you enjoyed it Alex, cheers for watching

Henry You can download a trial version to play around with and there are loads of tutorials on you tube as well as within the programme itself

Enjoyed that bud, hope you get well soon need you back out. 😃. No pressure lol. 💪
Haha no pressure 😂🙏🏼. Cheers mate!!
I use Dodge & Burn via Curves - it is a more flexible and adjustable way to Dodge & Burn. Happy to show you.
Thanks for the tip Dominic
Change the Orton blend mode to soft light you won’t regret it 😉 adds that extra ethereal punch
Will defo give that a shot cheers for the tip Jason :D
Brilliant tutorial Henry. Hope the swelling subsides soon.
Glad you enjoyed it Antony 🙏🏼

What are your thoughts Henry?
I prefer both but I'm pretty sure Camera Raw (that comes with PS) is very similar to Lightroom and so it could be a fair point
Comment no100 🙂 Great video, thanks for sharing!
Hi Henry, what Macbook or iMac do you recommend for post processing, and which one do you use?
My MacBook is from 2011 mate 😂😂. Spend money on photo trips haha

Haha yeah probably wouldn't have been a great idea! Thanks Brian
you sould do more videos about post production
Thank you for the comment Tommaso!! I will try my best 👍🏼
Too Dark can also be computer monitor preference or calibration.

Flippin eck, get well soon Henry! Good on you for still creating some content, top job👍🏻
Thanks a lot Mark cheers for the support mate!
