I have the MDS-JE520 that functions perfectly to this day that I bought in December of 1998. Prior to high capcity mp3 recorders, it was simply your best bet for simplified audio editing from other tape sources as well. I loved its utility.
I've loved MD ever since going to the launch party (I used to work at a key Sony retail store) and the MZ1. I still have an extensive collection of machinery and discs - my most recent purchase was am MDS 940 in great working condition - all for £ 25. However it was a lucky find which took me years as I wanted a deck with key board access. And yes my search for such bargains continues... 😎😎😎
I love my JB-930, it has a keyboard connection on the front that helps with track editing and titling. They are really great for digitizing old formats and analog sources to minidisc.
ebay is your best bet..I have my original Sony MDS-JE320 that I bought brand new back in the days and still works like a champ..I also have a Sony MDS-JE 510 that I bought on ebay last year and it looks and works like new with no issues on both decks...
I still own a Sony minidisc recorder/player. It has lived in it's original packaging for about 10 years now, along with the portable player that came with it. I may break it out again someday for nostalgic purposes, along with the box of minidiscs I recorded with it. It sounded a heck of a lot better than my cassettes ever did. I wonder if one can still purchase blank minidiscs out there. I'm going to check that out right after posting this message.
I was lucky enough to get one of these 980's a few years back on eBay when they went for a reasonable price (less than £120) and it's been a great buy, gorgeous sound, lots of features etc. Nowadays I've seen this model being advertised for silly money, like £1999 on eBay. I've been a MD user since they were introduced and sound wise they knock the socks off iPod's. Shame that Sony screwed up the software and even more so for not issuing updated drivers so that people can continue use their MD hardware with Windows 10 with issues.
Use WebMD search for webminidisc its brilliant, its transformed how I use NetMD, you can ditch the Sony poor outdated software completely. You basically use Chrome on your computer to drag and drop music into your web browser and record to your MD's
I've same mini disc deck the only weakness is the poor belt drive eject system, but I have just got the belt so I'm gonna have a go at fitting it because not many electrical repairs centers will have anything to with mini disc player's now there obsolete, but they are fantastic, and I love my JB 980 QS.
A very nice track to show off what is one of the best Minidisc recorder/players produced. I note you have just uploaded this, i am looking at getting a full sized recorder unit, can i ask how much you paid for this or have you had it a while ? I am still really into Minidisc and have a Sony 909 portable and a 580 in car unit, but wanted a full sized unit to get the very best recordings i can which should mean the best playback. Thanks
I was wondering, it is possible to hook up a pc using an optical signal, and using this 980 as a DAC for high end sound, and I am going to buy one second hand soon just for this reason. But could you please tell me does the MD give a monitoring signal only when recording is pushed, or does it always pass a signal, and is it neccesary to insert a disc to be able to hear the monitoring signal. Thanks, hope you like this idea, gives this nice old piece of equipment new life.
I got a sony minidisc bundle (portable and component) as a gift... still sitting in the box in my attic. Think I'm gonna open it... 19 years later... serious.
This great! I certainly enjoyed your turntable, the track that you were playing and recording it to the deck. I have an MZ-RH1 that I purchased in 2005 and still works greats after all the years. I feel that I need an update for an descent minidisc deck player/recorder. I searched on ES MD decks but couldn’t find enough information on what type of minidisc discs that it can play/record onto. The ES desks are great but as this wonderful model MDS-JB980 is the high end of the Quality Standard range and the model above this one is the lower model of ES. It’s an upper than average model. Having the ATRAC, ATRAC3, ATRAC3 PLUS, there is the usual MDLP and I believe MDSP. My question is can it playback and record on to a HI-MD? I’ve noticed on ES models the “TYPE R” and “TYPE S”. Do these have an effect on whether it can playback/record on a Hi-MD? Thank you
Don't take me to heart on this because I may be wrong. However, I somewhat remember reading that one shouldn't playback audio from vinyl *while recording from vinyl* as the needle will actually pick-up the vibrations from the speakers.
In theory, yes. This has a more recent version of A-TRAC. Having said that, i have the JB920 and JB930, both of which sound excellent to my ears. Ultimate sound quality depends much more on the speakers or headphones.
+LZN197 The 980 is a SUPERB Type S recorder. It does not get better. You are reacting to the fact that playback is much louder. Which, by the way, is a very useful fact to remember when you compare speakers.
It's better then cd in my oppinion.. And you record on the fly, like a CD-RW and you can record million times on a disc... (so they say) ... But you can edit, move, divide and name the tracks... Record form any source best from cd using a optical cable.... Sounds amazing..
It’s not better than CD audio quality-wise, because CD is uncompressed lossless WAV. All MiniDisc - even the last models that did ATRAC-R and ATRAC-S are compressed lossy audio quality. But the R and S format got pretty darn close to CD quality. Most people can’t tell the difference.
9 years later and this is just as stupid a comment then as it is now. No, MD didn’t fail because it came at a wrong time. It was actually quite successful in Japan (as of 2023, new blank MD’s are still made by Sony). It failed because technology moves fast, and the world preferred MP3 and pirated their music for free by the late 90’s/early 2000’s and the iPod destroyed any reason to have physical media like this.

Muhammad Najwan Panachri Napitupulu I've always wanted to have collections of MiniDisc at home that contains old songs!

The best digital format. Minidisc

Same here.
The mini disc gives the vinyl, reel to reel , tape recordings higher depth!
I got a sony minidisc bundle (portable and component) as a gift... still sitting in the box in my attic. Think I'm gonna open it... 19 years later... serious.
So did you open it? How did it go?

It's so hard finding these decks and I don't know where to get one after Sony discontinued making them.
Try Amazon or ebay.
sony had posher decks, the es series, the jb930 and 940 had better power supplys etc but, the 980 is the king

Very little risk if recorded properly. Just don’t crank your monitoring volume too high.
is this of a better recording quality as my MDS-J920?
In theory, yes. This has a more recent version of A-TRAC. Having said that, i have the JB920 and JB930, both of which sound excellent to my ears. Ultimate sound quality depends much more on the speakers or headphones.
Super Best audio home

quer compra um md sony JB940?tenho 1!!!abraço
Sorry. The final recording was WAY too bright (too much high end).
+LZN197 The 980 is a SUPERB Type S recorder. It does not get better.
You are reacting to the fact that playback is much louder. Which, by the way, is a very useful fact to remember when you compare speakers.
9 years later and this comment is still funny. Also, TH-cam audio compression skews what you’re hearing.
It did sound bright actually.
was a mini-disc as good as a CD? How could you record on one - Was it like a CD-R?

@@EnochLight Good info, thanks.
I have JE500.
nice MD shame about the amp
Minidisc came in a bad spot. Thats why it flopped... :/ It wasn't bad format. Just wrong timing
