- Short documentary about the unspoken reality in South Korea by Max David Arenas Pedraza.
Although poverty doesn't seem too prevalent in such a wealthy country, there is a lot more behind Korea's economical miracle story. 48.3% of the elderly population live under poverty. Yes, almost half of people over 60 years of age struggle everyday to get by due to lack of social welfare programs and policies from the government and support from families who are rapidly losing the sense of filial piety that characterised Asian cultures.
i'm a high school student in SOUTH KOREA. my dream is to become a social welfare worker. i will do my best for those underpriviled people.

I live in USA, we have homeless people begging for money in almost every intersection. My point is that poverty is in every country.

Homeless and poverty are from different worlds , here in India! It has the worst per capita amongst G20 & the general scenario of poverty is no different from the most underdeveloped countries of Africa. India's richest man , world's 10th richest, Ambani's house is in front of a slum 🤷🏻♀️

I don't think that's a reasonable comparison. In USA, you even pay for the ambulance, have no health insurance not to mention social insurance. But South Korea has a decent insurance policy for the general employee population, they don't have to pay for an IV even if you're just hangover and not actually seriously ill. The thing the government did I think, is that because the elderly population is from the war era and did not really help increase the GDP ("only" founded the country, what a shame), so they are seen as they did not contributed to their futures. Because the fact is, South Korea values large sums of money way too much. USA, on the other hand is mpre concerned about keeping from the public and investing into government operations.

korea has law children have to look after parents monthly 251.61 dollar or children is poor then government give 251.61 dollar to them. so they abandon their children. or they were bad parent so children refuse to cover them by court order. many of them are child abuser because old time it allow in social but law change . and educated children became adult knowing what is child abuser.

I lived in korea for 5 years. I have seen elderly people working on streets, collecting disposible items, etc for living and also elderly people living with their childern and grand childern. My house owner was abt 60 year old and he lived with his childern and grand childern. But he used to do all work on his own. I mean literally all work like cleaning of building, waste management, fixing of lights, etc. I remember when me and my wife had a baby he gave us gifts. He really represented korean rich culture to us. I really appreciated that old, kind, generous, hardworking old man.

This is the opposite of the Philippines, no matter how poor some families are, they still value the elders and respect them

Because the Philippines is a poor country so people can do that. South Korea is a rich and fast paced country. Society changed. Most people are focused on gaining wealth for themselves rather than wasting time helping their parents or the elderly. Once the Philippines becomes a rich country, this same situation in South Korea will happen there

@@rickwilson2589 in the Philippines, no matter how rich or poor you are if you have respect to your parents and you values them you will take care of them. it's not about the money, it's giving them back the effort they've done for us in our younger years. I have so many relatives who are rich but took care of their parents. rather than sending them in nursing homes. for me taking care of our parents is not wasting time. it's just paying them back the care they've done for us.

I’m a Filipino, Even we have a government full of Corrupt officials,.We are “RICH in HEART and SOUL” for LOVE and RESPECT for our ELDERLY,.In fact one of our custom is we live with our Lolo and Lola (ELDERLY) and even when we got married we still can live with our Parents..We are like GLUTENOUS RICE,.We stick to each other no matter we have “LOW INCOME” or you are “Rich one”..We have high Respect to our ELDERLY..Whenever our parents get old we take care of them as a way of Gratitude for giving us life and for their sacrifices..

I'm from Poland where there is a huge connection between young members of family with the oldest. I can't even imagine to leave my parents or grandparents behind without looking after them. They did soooo much for me.....but still poverty is a problem in every country in the world

Some want immediate and others deferred pleasure so the former usually stay in need. Working and saving can get you out of poverty but living beyond one's means is a recipe for failure.

Jojo Jo - Please Google causes (plural) of poverty in the USA. You might be surprised. I know of one woman employed in management at GM in the early 80s = AfroAmerican tags to riches story. Something snapped. She was seen talking to herself in downtown Detroit. Drugs? Schizophrenia? Brain tumor? The range of potential answers mind-boggling. Another woman, Caucasian, (Chicagoan?) has a fine life, making progress - for into a car accident - suffered closed head injury - had amnesia - lost everything. No known family. No known address, therefore couldn't qualify for any services. Maybe she died on the streets. Her blog ended with her living in a nasty shelter and volunteering at a soup kitchen to HIDE her plight.
The country could do something but would struggle in doing so as the large number of elders is hard to support with a smaller working age group. With low fertility rates less workers are born to support the elderly. There is nothing they can do unless they can solve the graying of the population. One way is by increasing immigration to the country and they are already taking actions in doing so.

I have lived in Korea for some time now and every time I find more reasons to want to stay here for life. Its hospitality, rich culture and the Korean people's mentality which caused such an astounding recovery are some of the things I greatly admire about this place. This documentary was not meant to put down this great country I love so much, yet to shed some light on some of the social problems that, although don't abound, do exist and you will not know about by watching K-dramas or listening to K-pop.
I hope you can learn something new by watching this documentary and use it to reflect about how we can contribute to making our own environments a better place from wherever we stand.

This video just popped out in my recommendations today. I always picture South Korea as a flashy aesthetic place due to their music and TV shows. It's sad to know that they don't give enough attention to their elderly. Young generation these days just ignore what the elderly did to their country in the past in order to obtain what they have today. Having good values is still more important than materials.
The value of the building is not worth it, but did you check the land price? It is a middle-class place when they receive reconstruction permission from the city of Seoul and sponsorship of the construction company.
The value of real estate is not merely a poor view of the world. Even though they are poor, they have a futuristic value of real estate development.

Thanks for the vid. As you might have heard the new Korean government just revealed a plan for the revision of the constitution. With that, any human beings will be treated equally respected . The focus in on “humans” not only “Korean citizens”. Please keep an eye on the new constitution and the changes it will bring. Thanks to all the political turmoils, many Koreans are waking up. They used to believe in competition and being rich. Now they are starting to understand the importance of “respect” and “service” to each other as fellow global citizens.
South Korea needs to step up and take care of their elderly parents and population. Like seriously can’t imagine kicking my parents out 🤬🤬🤬 in the asian community and through out Asia we are obligated if not it’s in our roots to take care of our elderly parents with respect and dignity. Watching this just breaks my heart.

We've got the money but we didn't sent our grandma to a facility, my mom took care of her . She does bathed her, changed clothes and she does changed her diapers . I'm married to a korean,and whenever i see a beggar on the street with my husband, he wouldnt let me share a penny to them :( He would say they are lazy people and it hurts hearing him say that because I came from a third world country. In Korea, if you are young and hard working,you can survive but its different with the elderly.Alot of less previledge elderly here makes money out of recycle papers and bottles that people throws away. People in korea buy almost everything online alot, so each home throws alot of parcel boxes weekly. Also, people who doesn't use water dispenser at home buys bottled waters in bulk for drinking. A less privileged elderly makes money out of it by selling them to junk shops or they sell thier home grown veggies to the open market.
I think the government helps the wrong people sometimes. My friend's husband gets financial help from the government they also get free rice monthly,hospital discounts, even alowance
for recreational things like watching movies ,fees for parks and etc. He has a stable job but he hides his savings on his sibling and mother's bank account. Even his car is not under his name. He wouldn't let my friend work coz the government might stop the help that they get once they trace thier bank accounts coz it would mean they can support themselves on their own. I dont know how he got that help. But i know he's not suppose to be getting it.

i agree...i think they're just lazy...there are lots of work in korea..they hired overseas workers because of shortages of manpower in some small companies...and i think the poverty rate in korea is small...compare to my country(philippines), middle class workers paid not enough for our daily needs. So many unsettlers everywhere and so many crimes...only rich in our country has decent life...middle class like me struggle to live, salary is insufficient and you live in debt forever

I was a missionary assigned in Korea for almost 4 years. I volunteered in that place for more than a year. I did home visitation for the elderly just to talk, eat with them and spend time with them. I enjoyed those time spent with them...

I've been taking care of my disabled mom for the past 8 years by myself, the last 20+ with my dad's help. I can't see her ever surviving without me. the callousness shown to these poor elderly just makes me want to cry.
Callous? South Koreans have some of the longest working hours in the world and one of the lowest birth rates because they don't have time and money for a family. It's not a choice.

South Korea should stop giving more importance in kpop and their image but rather give importance to these elderly people.
John Snow let's be honest. Kpop is what's bringing the money in to the economy too. And those idols have jobs too. They need to support themselves. What needs to change is the governments attitude and this stupid idea of class and status that we hold so dearly to which always results in "it's your fault because you're poor,". Because even though they stop giving Kpop it's importance, it still doesn't change the opinion they have on the elderly who live in poverty.

i have lived over 15 years in Korea, during that time i have witnessed many cold hearted and cruel acts by the Koreans towards one another. I found it hard to understand, because these people were so warm and kind towards me. Although we Americans could stand for some improvement on how we treat our elderly. I think we are light years ahead of the Koreans.

well many come to mind but some of the ones that stand out were little children who were amerasian or even full blooded Koreans digging through garbage to get something to eat. elderly people standing on the street corner try to sell some gum or candy while young thugs would pass by and spit in their cups. also the yellow slave market where young girls who may come from troubled homes were bought and sold for the sex trade industry like chattel. i have found if you fit the norm you can do quite well in Korean society but if you are outside the norm it can be very rough.
As an American, I don't see America as any better. The things Americans do to each other can be just as bad or worse. There are many elderly ppl who are abused and ignored in AmerIca. The gov't barely helps the homeless and the poor. All the programs to help are usually the first to get budget cuts. Each country has their own problems and to say one is better than another just shows egocentric pride.

When i went to korea two years ago in december i went to hongdae with my older cousins. I saw a homeless man lying down in the streets in the frigid weather with no shoes on and i felt so terrible for him. And to make matters worse, no one acknowledged him. Every one passed by him as if he were nothing. So i wanted to do a good deed of the day because i hate to see someone suffering like that, so i donated 10,000 won, (about 10USD). My cousins saw what i did and scolded me for it, and i actually felt ashamed. They told me he was just an actor and not actually homeless. But honestly the state he was in, it was clear he was not an actor to be doing something like that. I was angry at my cousins but i didnt show it. Im just appalled at how the young generations of korea treat their homeless population.

My Mother suffered as a child back in 1950's in Taegu...I was born there in 1973....I heard so many sad stories...I pray all poverty ends.
all of us will reach that old stage in our lives....so sad that when you get old this is what will happen to you, cause you are no longer useful to the society...how sad....I think their children should look after them since these old people when they were stronger they also worked hard for their children and now that strength is no longer with them, they have been left behind...

Thanks for this. I've always seen the glitz and glam of life in South Korea but never thought of the possibility of poverty. You've opened my eyes to this growing concern.
On my trip to south Korea I encountered a few elderly living in poverty and I will tell you, they are the sweetest people I have ever met in my entire life, I don't look Korean, I speak very little but they still showed me unforgettable kindness when I was lost, or when it was raining, I love the elderly in south Korea with all my heart. The elderly in my birth country where I look very Filipino don't even treat me as kind as the elderly in south korea. I wasn't sure where my stop was to get to my hotel, a not too wealthy looking elderly man rode with me and told me when to get off. On my last day I was waiting at the air port shuttles bus stop and it was raining, the bench was a little wet so I stood with my umbrella until a small kind elderly woman wiped down the seat and pulled me to sit with her, she was living at that bus stop. She tried to talk to me but I barely understood, she asked which airport I was going to and she pointed me to the correct bus, I knew it wasn't correct but I couldn't respond back so I just smiled, I wish I could've talked to her more but all I could do is say thank you and leave when my bus came, it broke my heart, all the people in Korea stole my heart, the amount of kindness a lot had for me, I want to work hard in school so that I can give to them, that wonderful old woman might not be there, I think about her every day, Im sad I don't remember her face too well, but I miss her and I knew her for 10 minutes, thats how big of an impact she made on me.

Once I visited Washington D.C in the middle of very cold winter day, I saw several young beggars stood hopelessly. Next day morning, I saw TV news and shocked with the deaths of those hopeless young beggars.
An other case when I visited Japan Tokyo, I toured Ueno Park, and saw many tents under large trees, where homeless people live there. And even more homeless people were seen near subway train paths.
Every large cities in the world have the same kind of poor people.
What's more disgusting is that the media never even acknowledge this, they just show the rich urban areas of the country while ignoring the millions of poor people in South Korea that helped build the country in the first place.

This is such a shame. Shameful that the government does not do more for the elderly. All civilized countries should be judged by how they treat those who cannot help themselves. The elderly, disabled and orphans are society's responsibility. Of course families should take care of their family members but that is not always possible when many struggle to take care of themselves. I am so sad to see young people in South Korea become so self centered. It seems to be all about me, me, me, me. I understand that many young people are over educated and struggling to find employment. But they must remember, their struggles are not comparable to what past generations had to struggle with. I see young people enjoying the fruits of the labor, sweat and tears that the older generations worked to build South Korea into what it is today. While our parents and grandparents skipped purchasing pleasures and putting away savings for themselves to feed and educate their children better, this generation complains about not getting hired at top companies like Samsung. Stop acting like spoiled brats and take those jobs at mid-level companies and help build it into another Samsung. You are not entitled just because you have a great education. It's quite sad to hear that many educated young people feel that many jobs are beneath them and they would rather be jobless than take these jobs. Any honest work is good work. I feel so sorry for these elderly, I hope the new president creates a better welfare system for them. They should not go hungry or homeless. Young people should not dismiss them as lazy or irresponsible, that's just an excuse so you can go get your $5 Starbucks without guilt. If you see a homeless elderly, please skip your Starbucks and show some compassion. Young people seem to be demanding justice and fairness in their society as manifested by recent South Korean politics but justice, fairness, compassion starts with the most basics of humanity and that's to take care of our children, aging parents and those who cannot help themselves.

We do not have all those natural resources like shale and coal gas under the land like USA and Europe. We only have human resources. So it is kinda inevitable to leave some people behind on the progress. But what you pointed out on luxurious living that young people are going for is one of main problem. And reluctance of working in mid-tiered company is also one but I wish this culture that the employees have to drink alcohol heavily on yearly end of season must change somehow. And the ineffective long working hours like 12 or more hours is something South Korea must solve step by step.

I dearly love my parents and even though we live far from them...I talk to them daily to see how they are doing...my parents taught me so much about compassion, generosity, love etc etc....I passed it on to my children but alas, in western society...we can set a good example but it does not always succeed...I hope, my grandkids never treat their parents unlovingly...we shall see once they are grown...this documentary is heart breaking...with their population becoming elderly with less children...they will taste what they have done to their parents...a sad cycle

There are people who care for their elderly & their children in every country & there are also those who couldn’t care less. Let’s not find fault. Filipinos aren't the ones who leaves behind their elders. We have here what we called the extended family, it doesn't matter if were too much in our 🏡 but the important things is were all together.
it's unthinkable how a kid can just abandoned their parents or grandparents. they were the one who paid for them in the past. in indonesia, we also sometimes get a news about abandoned elders, but it's not so severe as there are a complex which consist only elders. even the poor families keep their elders with them. even if they didn't get welfare, family support should be enough for them. around that age, present of family members is more important than money.

First visited Seoul 9 years ago in the winter to see my son who had moved from Scotland to teach English for one year. Going back to my hotel around 3am in the morning,
I saw old men collecting cardboard with no shoes on their feet in the middle of winter, it was below 0 - degrees. Did not realise that pensioner poverty was so wide spread in Korea.

Because of K-Pop, I wanted to look more into Korea. The Philippines is much more different than in South Korea. Seeing how every place contains poverty, makes my heart ache. Elders are being attacked by poverty in SK... When my heart aches, I realize that people don't even have a heart for people who suffer these things. The children of these elders should at lease take care of their parents or pay for them to live in a nursing home!. I work a full time job and I take care of my 82 year old mother who has early signs of dementia. We all wouldn't be here if it wasn't for our Parents and Elders, in my eyes they are my Joy & Love from God!. Times have change and Its generation!.

I've just spent 2.5 months living in Seoul and I saw many poor people sleeping in the subways. This surprised and shocked me as I thought everyone was fairly well off there. The Korean government need to wake up and deal with this and assist these people. It made me so angry.
I will try my best not to abandon my parent.
I'm watching this and got me thinking how critical it is to fix this problem...I don't just blame the government but the society and in each families to educate their own kids to look back at the helpless and homeless and especially the elders...otherwise it'll be a big cycle that will one day come back to us when we get old. Thanks for the video and keep up the good work.

I live in the US and we have poverty here like that as well. I've always been fascinated to learn about other countries and this just makes me sad. I guess poverty is everywhere. It shouldn't be. Especially for the senior citizens. South Korea looks like a beautiful country and it's heartbreaking to see this poverty. Such beautiful people. 💔
Last November 2018, I was in South Korea and witness a few street dwellers. I wonder where would they sleep during cold seasons?

Yes, poverty is everywhere.
One of the first things that impressed me about South Korea was its tradition in respect of their elders. It was something quite lacking in my culture and I’ve seen the consequences of it.
I was disappointed to hear South Korean culture has let care of the elderly slip. I hope there is a wake up call in their society to return to that virtue.
No matter your nationality, you should respect and care for your aging parents.
