Been a HitFilm user for about a year now. So excited to see this release from you guys. Always thought your app was underrated, but I think this will finally put you guys on the map
This is amazing! The way you explain it Simon, makes it very understandable. Usually these visual effects tutorials feel really daunting because they skip over 'basic' knowledge and one just ends up clicking away because they get lost. I'm learning more about HitFilm now before I download it, but honestly its quickly becoming clear that going with this is a no brainer. Never before have I seen a 'one stop shop' program for every part of editing. Keep it up!
11:51 and this is where the effect starts to look unrealistic. There are now two zoom perspectives in the frame: one on the wall, and the the other through the portal. To make this effect seamless, the DP would have to take note on what perspective we will be seeing through the portal from. The explanation of the effect was 10/10. Very clear, very easy to follow. Thank you.
Josh Hart - yup, that works. As with pretty much all aspects of filmmaking, there's always multiple ways to do shots. If you already have AE, you might be more interested in HitFilm 3 Pro, which includes over 130 plugins for using in Adobe products.
HitFilm Downloaded it already! and did the portal and muzzle flash effect yesteday. It was pretty easy yet awesome to do! only the smoke wasn't really smooth :P love hitfilm!

So so much better than Sony Vegas and Pro and its FREE just got this over 2 weeks ago still learning it but real soon it'll all pay off because I'm planning on releasing a short comedy film called Teleporter plan on releasing it on my 18th birthday October 17th less than 2 months away and having this free software is amazing HitFilm just gave us gave us gift
This is very cool. I'm just starting to put together ideas to write a screenplay and shoot a sci-fi short film and this will be a big help in deciding which effects will support the story when we start filming.
Within 1 year I'm going to use this very effect in Hitfilm with 3D animation. Hopefully I can pull it off. I already have the Weighted Companion Cube showing in my my videos, if I can just learn to use the Portal effect.

nice tutorial ill do my best to, work with this program, however, i wanted to initially, spend very little time on the effects, and just insert the files, maybe change volume levels etc, where things come into play, do a little PIP, throw in my intro, and maybe some bg music, ill let you know how it goes.

Looks great! I did notice that you moved the View->Image of the thug in the z-direction (inside the portal), but there doesn't seem to be much (or any?) parallax when the camera moves. Is that doable with the Appearance->Depth option? Thanks.
itai alter if you move the View back in Z you will indeed get parallax if you move a 3D camera past the portal. It will depend on the shot how obvious it is, of course.

The portal effects are built into HitFilm 4 Express, so you just need to download the software to get them. The project files can be downloaded if you want to follow along with the tutorial.

Followed this tutorial and applied it to one of my own videos in hitfilm 4 express. All the time the portal is visible it is fine and the tracking is perfect, however when the portal is not visible (it spawns in and goes away again) the rectangle that from the plain layer where the portal is is clearly visible and although it is tracking it is very laggy and glitches around, how do I fix this?
I know this is an old video but thought I'd hold out hope for a response regardless. Is there a way to control the expansion on the complex portal so that all the different parts open together at the same time? So it all opens just like it does with the Dimension Rift at 11:00 in the video. Thanks. Great video, and great software, by the way =]

How would I put something over the portal? Like a person in front of it Also when I make my portal the grade area is not exact with the rest of the video when I am using the expansion slider How can I fix that?
As with any VFX elements masking or green screening would help put your actors in front of the portal. Have you made sure you're using the correct layer type? The portal is attached to a Plane with the Silo layer set as the Wall image. If you can go into more detail I'll do what I can to help :) - Oli (HitFilm Staff)

+88 “xxDaleEarnhardtJr.xx” 88 We show you how to create a fireball in 3D space in HitFilm in this tutorial: th-cam.com/video/ZSarANQ11Ds/w-d-xo.html However because it's an advanced effect you will need the Pro version of the software rather than our free Express version (if that's what you're using). Otherwise, you can use the glow effect (type in 'glow' to your effects panel in Express), drag on top of your video and then alter its properties to create a ball. Hope that helps!
It seems it may have something to do with the drivers to my 970 video card and not initializing shaders. I hear they are working on it. Okay, well.... I will just forget using dimension rift for now. On to something else.
My problem is the compositing layout.Because my display has aspect ratio of 4:3 the preview window is really small and can't fit the whole video even in "fit " scale.And i cant make the "controls" tabs smaller.
+Danogot516 that is quite an unusual screen ratio and resolution. HitFilm is designed primarily for widescreen displays, so the interface is likely to be a little crushed up unfortunately.

Yes, it is possible with HitFilm 4 Express. You can use masks to define where an actor is visible within the shot, or to make them disappear as they pass through the portal. Depending on the specific shot, you may need to greenscreen the actor to more easily manipulate his layer separately from the main footage.
+Flip 390 Don't know if you, found a solution but if not you can by shooting the scene with and without the actor, then you'll only have to, play with the masks
It would be hard because if the portal is on a wall the actor can't run any further. So his body won't even pass where the portal is. With a green screen my actor can just run and then I put him in the proper background. Then at the point when he hits the portal I will just create a mask to make his body not visible when I is over the portal
hey I'm a bit confused because I got the software on my macbook pro and the layout is different?? especially at the tracking bit, there was extra stuff eg. track and trimmer and they're taking up so much space?
Finnbarr Richman Can you explain to us a little more what you mean? There are no noticeable differences between the interface on a PC or a Mac so it would be great if you could describe in some more detail.
Well on the right there's a big tab saying track and on the left there's one saying trimmer, I don't know how to get rid of them? When I was adding the tracker (for the portal) i a bunch of options came up on 'track' and at the bottom it said 'apply' but when clicked it did nothing
Finnbarr Richman Oh I see - you were saying that the layout is different to what you're used to (I assume with older version of the software). I thought you meant that the layout was different on the Mac to the PC. We have added the trimmer window so that you can preview media before using it on the timeline. If you don't like using the trimmer, you can right click on the panel and click 'float panel', then click 'x'. Does that help?
Well, the Portal tool being used in the video is unique to HitFilm Express, so you won't have the same ease of use that is shown here, for animating the portal creation. But yes, I'm sure you could create similar portals in Blender if you have sweet Blender skills.

I want a 'Magnify' effect on a moving head across the screen. Thing is, when I do the 'track' and parent/child function. It moves the entire clip, making it clip out of the viewing platform, making black show around the clip. I just want the magnify tool, to track the head, not move my camera.

Just saying, Splice is the best video editing program for IOS. There are no in-app purchases and there are lots of sound effects and non-copyright music.

I'm pretty sure you might not answer this but its killing me. I went into effect and found the dimension rift. But it wobnt llet me use it. I made a new composit shot but i just cant do anything with it. I tried dragging it into the layers but nothing is happening. Please help.
+LMENTAL Studios so in your Effects panel, you ONLY have Quick3D effects? Nothing else? I've not heard of that happening before - I'd suggest uninstalling and reinstalling to see if that helps.
Effects that state they're 'layer only' can only be applied to an existing layer. There isn't anything to unlock, they just need to be dragged onto a layer :) - Oli (HitFilm Staff)

Which files do you mean? For the project file (Portal tutorial project.hfp), you should use the Open command from the Home menu, then select the project file. If you want to import the footage files into your own project, then you should use the Import command in the Media panel of HitFilm, and then select the files you want to import.

And yes, if you speed up a video filming over a prolonger period of time (e.g. day and night), it is called a timelapse.

+Jabba Janes the speed effect doesn't change the amount of a clip being used on the timeline. So if you do a 2x speed on a clip, the second half will indeed be black because all the frames have been sped up into the first half.
Hi I have a problem I downloaded Hitfilm 3 Express and I was wondering where is the particle simulator also why can't I import 3D models I mean this Hitfilm 3 Express should be better and have a lot more effects and things in it than hitfilm 2 express or is hitfilm 3 express Free "" full version just the same thing im pretty disappointed.
+TheMovieMaster The particle simulator and 3D model import are very powerful features and so we couldn't include them in HitFilm 3 Express for free. However, they are available in HitFilm 3 Pro (or if you wouldn't like to invest in Pro, the features are available individually as add-on packs for Express: hitfilm.com/store/hitfilm-3-express) You can see the difference between HitFilm 3 Pro and HitFilm 3 Express in this comparison table at the bottom of that page also. So pretty much your telling me Hitfilm 3 express Free barely has any more effects then hitfilm Express the very very first hitfilm express well I have to say that is extremely disappointing and sounds like a complete utter waste of space on my computer sense I already have hitfilm express 1 I mean for real guys don't be like Microsoft money hungry fools and care more about the people who are going to use your software you might even get better rating if you listen to my words

The Comic King We can assure you that HitFilm 3 Express is not a demo. If you're getting that error, it is likely that you didn't activate the software when you started using it. When you launch the software, you will be asked whether you want to activate it, and will be asked to enter your HitFilm.com account login details. Did you go through this step?
I just got it and edited a video for 3 hours, then when I tried to upload it to youtube it said I could only upload 30 seconds because of the demo. wtf I thought it was a full thing. Do I actually have to pay for this?
The software will run in demo mode until you activate it using the free serial code you received when you registered. Once you activate, all export limitations are removed.

+Danogot516 that is quite an unusual screen ratio and resolution. HitFilm is designed primarily for widescreen displays, so the interface is likely to be a little crushed up unfortunately.
HitFilm Can I modify it somehow?
***** Um...The GPU doesn't have anything to do with this problem.It's all from the display and I know that.But I don't have the money to afford a 5:3 display right now.Besides, the controls tab is too big and I can't make it smaller.But if I could I would have more space and the preview screen would be bigger.
Hey Hitfilm! How do I make it look like an actor is walking through the portal? Is that possible with Hitfilm 4 Express?
Yes, it is possible with HitFilm 4 Express. You can use masks to define where an actor is visible within the shot, or to make them disappear as they pass through the portal. Depending on the specific shot, you may need to greenscreen the actor to more easily manipulate his layer separately from the main footage.
ok thanks, but I am a bit confused on how I would do it without a green screen. Could you possibly do a tutorial on it or explain how?
+Flip 390 Don't know if you, found a solution but if not you can by shooting the scene with and without the actor, then you'll only have to, play with the masks

It would be hard because if the portal is on a wall the actor can't run any further. So his body won't even pass where the portal is. With a green screen my actor can just run and then I put him in the proper background. Then at the point when he hits the portal I will just create a mask to make his body not visible when I is over the portal
hey I'm a bit confused because I got the software on my macbook pro and the layout is different?? especially at the tracking bit, there was extra stuff eg. track and trimmer and they're taking up so much space?
Finnbarr Richman Can you explain to us a little more what you mean? There are no noticeable differences between the interface on a PC or a Mac so it would be great if you could describe in some more detail.
Well on the right there's a big tab saying track and on the left there's one saying trimmer, I don't know how to get rid of them? When I was adding the tracker (for the portal) i a bunch of options came up on 'track' and at the bottom it said 'apply' but when clicked it did nothing
Finnbarr Richman Oh I see - you were saying that the layout is different to what you're used to (I assume with older version of the software). I thought you meant that the layout was different on the Mac to the PC. We have added the trimmer window so that you can preview media before using it on the timeline. If you don't like using the trimmer, you can right click on the panel and click 'float panel', then click 'x'. Does that help?

Can those portals be made in Blender? :0
Well, the Portal tool being used in the video is unique to HitFilm Express, so you won't have the same ease of use that is shown here, for animating the portal creation. But yes, I'm sure you could create similar portals in Blender if you have sweet Blender skills.
The flames don’t work?
I downloadet the files and did the EXACT same things but for me even at the start the Portal wont even show up anywhere. Theres just a black screen!
can you guys show how to save and upload the edit videos?

I want a 'Magnify' effect on a moving head across the screen. Thing is, when I do the 'track' and parent/child function. It moves the entire clip, making it clip out of the viewing platform, making black show around the clip. I just want the magnify tool, to track the head, not move my camera.

Just saying, Splice is the best video editing program for IOS. There are no in-app purchases and there are lots of sound effects and non-copyright music.
Now how do I make the portal open and close on command?
Make a mask for the layer, add slide in key frames that open up the portal

I'm pretty sure you might not answer this but its killing me. I went into effect and found the dimension rift. But it wobnt llet me use it. I made a new composit shot but i just cant do anything with it. I tried dragging it into the layers but nothing is happening. Please help.

+LMENTAL Studios so in your Effects panel, you ONLY have Quick3D effects? Nothing else? I've not heard of that happening before - I'd suggest uninstalling and reinstalling to see if that helps.
How to unlock [layer only] ?
Effects that state they're 'layer only' can only be applied to an existing layer. There isn't anything to unlock, they just need to be dragged onto a layer :)

Which files do you mean? For the project file (Portal tutorial project.hfp), you should use the Open command from the Home menu, then select the project file. If you want to import the footage files into your own project, then you should use the Import command in the Media panel of HitFilm, and then select the files you want to import.

Hey Hitfilm.I just want to say thank you. It`s a great Software and for free. I can do effects like bonfires etc. and i repete: All for free. Guys I love you :) But I have one questions: Can you bring the Software on German? It would be a lot of easier for me because i am German. And yes, if you speed up a video filming over a prolonger period of time (e.g. day and night), it is called a timelapse.

+Jabba Janes the speed effect doesn't change the amount of a clip being used on the timeline. So if you do a 2x speed on a clip, the second half will indeed be black because all the frames have been sped up into the first half.
Hi I have a problem I downloaded Hitfilm 3 Express and I was wondering where is the particle simulator also why can't I import 3D models I mean this Hitfilm 3 Express should be better and have a lot more effects and things in it than hitfilm 2 express or is hitfilm 3 express Free "" full version just the same thing im pretty disappointed.
+TheMovieMaster The particle simulator and 3D model import are very powerful features and so we couldn't include them in HitFilm 3 Express for free. However, they are available in HitFilm 3 Pro (or if you wouldn't like to invest in Pro, the features are available individually as add-on packs for Express: hitfilm.com/store/hitfilm-3-express)

So pretty much your telling me Hitfilm 3 express Free barely has any more effects then hitfilm Express the very very first hitfilm express well I have to say that is extremely disappointing and sounds like a complete utter waste of space on my computer sense I already have hitfilm express 1 I mean for real guys don't be like Microsoft money hungry fools and care more about the people who are going to use your software you might even get better rating if you listen to my words

The Comic King We can assure you that HitFilm 3 Express is not a demo. If you're getting that error, it is likely that you didn't activate the software when you started using it. When you launch the software, you will be asked whether you want to activate it, and will be asked to enter your HitFilm.com account login details. Did you go through this step?

I just got it and edited a video for 3 hours, then when I tried to upload it to youtube it said I could only upload 30 seconds because of the demo. wtf I thought it was a full thing. Do I actually have to pay for this?
The software will run in demo mode until you activate it using the free serial code you received when you registered. Once you activate, all export limitations are removed.
