Oh my God yes!!!! It's such a bitch to do, but it is possible via older builds Fun fact the ReactOS bootloader (FreeLoader) still natively recognizes the OG Xbox as an OG Xbox
Yes, you did it! I love your videos because this reminds me of my endless experiments with PCs and reinstalling different OSes over and over. This was pure fun. Stay awesome, Michael!
Michael I really liked this video. I haven't laughed that much since I got ill. I love "The 98 PC" videos. I can feel your frustration. Been there and done that many times. You would think that after 24 years they would have it together. At any rate keep plugging along my friend.
When you were installing the Other PCI Device, it said that if you installed custom hardware, it could make the system unusable. Maybe that was the problem.
I nominate the $5 Windows 98 PC for the most native OS installed. ReactOS is still trying to meet Server 2003 compatibility so it is a long way off from even Vista. Not to mention how buggy it is as it was in the video and it doesn't even support NTFS. If you want to dualboot, you should choose VBR install and then you can have the Windows Bootloader boot into the VBR of ReactOS to allow dualboot though it requires you to edit the bcd using bcdedit. Though, considering how buggy it is, ReactOS should be relegated to virtual machines. I mean, it is literally alpha software still (though a lot more useful than the GNU Hurd kernel)
CKing Pro why do they keep building the project if it’s still in alpha after 20 odd years and decades behind current Windows. I just don’t see the point.
SpringBok01 the whole point is to provide an open source OS compatible with Windows but what is even more bizarre is why GNU Hurd is still in development after 30 years.
@@springbok4015 While yeah its obsolete its still better than nothing. If it ever reaches a state were its stable and people actually start supporting it, it could be very much the end of microsoft. Just imagine, lots of people are still using XP and 7 nowadays, me included, if people went "back" and started supporting reactOS as they did back then with XP, which isnt that hard, then lots of people would have no excuse not to use it instead of windows. DirectX works on top of windows so you could always install it on reacOS provided it implemented all the syscalls necesary for it. Its just a matter of reactOS implementing everything it needs and people using it, then companies will jump in, just like they did with linux.
@@laharl2k ReactOS would definitely need to be 64-bit to be a viable alternative to modern operating systems (though having 32-bit and 16-bit compatibility layers is not a bad idea), but otherwise, yeah. As far as general usability, not much has changed in the way Windows has worked since XP that people don't generally dislike.
React OS whilst an interesting project has had little to no mass development in the years it's been around. There are plenty of better Linux and other operating systems that have just 1 developer and are in a stable state. I would like to see React OS go stable but they prefer to keep playing catch-up to the more and more things that run on Windows to run on React OS. If they simply made and took what they have now, made it stable without worrying about playing catch-up to Windows and then released a series of smaller updates that focus on compatibility then people can use it as a daily driver. Just a thought🤔🤔🤔
This happens when the developers of a new operating system love the system they are trying to clone too much. I don't expect ReactOS to ever become a usable alternative to Windows or other operating systems, especially as gaming is moving to the cloud and native Windows compatibility with games and applications is becoming irrelevant. It is still nice as a free version of Windows, but that may not really matter much anymore these days.
The comparison to Linux is a bit off because React is a whole OS being built from the ground, whereas Linux developers already have a fully-functioning kernel from the moment development begins.
@Clarissa 1986 We will see. I think gaming hardware is getting increasingly expensive while in many instances still tied to a combination of an operating system that is in decline, so it may be easier to just stream everything from the cloud. Of course this will not be a solution for competitive gaming. And as all popular games are closed source, eventually publishers may not offer locally playable games anymore.
I dont think ReactOS has a real active development to it. If their goal was to replicate and Reverse engineer a Windows Environment they are far from it. The project started like 20+ years ago and it's still far from stable. They should have chosen a specific version of Windows to replicate and try to be as accurate as it can be.

The graphic driver issue may not be a ReactOS problem. I seem to remember that many of the old VESA ROMs from back in the day were very buggy. This would cause DOS games to go weird as well.
Hey Michael, you said that you were having issues with the dual-booting when ReactOS was installed. I would recommend looking into the "BCDBoot" command, and trying to run that to recreate the bootloader for Windows 7 and Vista.

Isn't ReactOS supposed to be Windows XP/Server 2003 driver compatible? If your onboard graphics has 2000/XP/2003 drivers you could try those instead of VGA. Anyway, it seems ReactOS handles low-color modes REALLY badly. It doesn't even turn off the gradient effect on the title bar (which obviously doesn't look anywhere near decent in 16-color modes)
Freezing up at shutdown is an issue I very regularly have on my main laptop when running Linux. I don't know why, but it seems open source OSes don't like ACPI.
Close all programs before Logging out before you shutdown. Logging out forces all of the programs to stop. Shutting down directly won't always do this and will wait for programs to stop. This causes the freeze up.
It honestly doesn't seem to be, though... it reminds me of those custom ROMs for Android that are listed as "beta/works" and are _technically_ capable of booting up, but also have a "known problem" section that's half a page long and includes things such as "camera doesn't take video" and "GPS doesn't get a fix". I guess you could turn a ReactOS machine into a writing device, but then you can do that on KolibriOS too and it'll be much faster...
that OG Xbox Option likely is only for Dev units/those that did the Ram upgrade hack (where you can tack on an extra 64MB Ram to double up to 128MB Ram by sodering onto the backside on the MB,)
I have an extremely bad laptop (Lenovo g505) which has a 2 core processor with the speed of only 1Ghz! It also has 4gb of ram. A lot of Linux distros that I tried (lubuntu, manjaro kde, Ubuntu) are slow on the laptop and oftenly freeze. I recently installed windows xp on the laptop and although it runs fine it detects only 2 out of 4 gb of ram it has. How well would React OS work on it?
Try the most recent Lubuntu. I want to buy a dvd for my windows xp pc that i got from my uncle, but i can't boot from usb sadly. And i don't know if it can run from the hardware. It has a pentium 4 and 1,5gb ram. Ati radeon 9000. Update: i'm able to run Lubuntu 18.04 with a great experience. People think ubuntu is the same as Lubuntu, but lubuntu has lxde and ubuntu gnome3 desktop
I have a very similar system (P4 3Ghz, Radeon HD2400, 3GB ram) and I dual boot Debian 10 and Win XP Pro easily. Both Debian with Plasma desktop and Win XP work great. If you can't boot from USB, just go ahead and burn the iso file onto a DVD, and then boot off of that.
I have tried every flavor of Linux i could find with no luck on this old Systemax Sabre G67 and i keep getting an LFENCE error, so im going to give this a try thank you
I swear, I think ReactOS has gotten worse over the years. I remember it used to work pretty okay for some Windows software, now its so terrible and unstable I can't even get it to run in a VM without issues.
@Clarissa 1986 I feel like their priorities are not right, they should focus on making an OS that actually works and is somewhat stable first, and just look at the damn leaked XP code already! learn from it and implement things in their own way without using any actual Microsoft code, that's how reverse-engineering works but the team refuses to do this and this is why they'll be forever trapped in an unstable unusable piece of crap that someday it will die a pathetic death.
So, what I got out of this is not to bother with ReactOS. Last time I tried to use it was about 10 years ago. And it doesn't seemed to have done much in that time.
Does the same VBE driver problem occur when you use Standard PC HAL instead (select "Standard PC Uniprocessor" computer type at setup)? When it comes to multi-boot, you need to set it up in freeldr.ini. Install Windows Vista/7 first (same as previously), then ReactOS and add an entry for Windows Boot Manager partition.
Both 0.4.12 and 0.4.13-RC install fine in Virtualbox using 1024x768x32 during install. ODD thing is, I installed the 0.4.12 using linux x64 as a base with 4GB RAM and my CPU showed as my i7@ 3.8Ghz in ReactOS properties box. I installed 0.4.13 on an NT base, with 4GB RAM and it showed as an i7@1GHZ CPU speed in the same properties box. I'm going to see if it reads OK when I use a Windows 2000 base. It installs everything but a sound driver, I am going to try a few Win98 ones I have and see if any work on it, I expect they won't. Also, the theme switcher works perfectly, ALL the theme icons work, and the styles are shown as thumbnails. And you might try changing the ACPI PC Uniprocessor to a Standard PC Uniprocessor on install
22 years later: Hey guys welcome to another video, this time we're gonna take a look at ReactOS alpha 0.90.643.666.4 and..... it crashed at boot time again, well see you in 40 more years for the next alpha.
What program would work to use a bootable CD? I tried using Rufus and it’s isn’t going anywhere. I’m planning on installing it on my pentium three Lenovo Thinkpad.
Was this an April Fools?! ... seriously, nice to see the ReactOS guys commenting on your channel. I'd like to see ReactOS make a better version of the windows linux subsystem.. If reactOS nails fast virtualisation and can run Linux (software) really fast (barring (full) graphics acceleration) and reliably, and also Android apps the lack of full MS Windows (TM) support would be far less of a problem... If Linux drivers could be used in place of currently non-functioning Windows drivers it could be reliably usable far quicker... An interesting effort, even if I do no agree with software developers (or anyone) doing such difficult jobs for free, or a tiny payment at best.... TBH I like KalibriOS the most out of the current alternative OS's.. It works on all hardware I've tried it on from a USB stick. It's a bit too limited at the moment but with a modern N-Vidia and ATI driver and OpenGL/Vulkan support it would be pretty perfect.

Having used ReactOS as my daily for a couple months I'm glad to see others realising it's quite fit for use now :)
What is wrong with you
that OG Xbox Option likely is only for Dev units/those that did the Ram upgrade hack (where you can tack on an extra 64MB Ram to double up to 128MB Ram by sodering onto the backside on the MB,)
I still have yet to see the advantage of ReactOS over Linux and Wine/Proton.
that five dollar investment really went a long way
you really love your 5 dollar windows PC!!!
9:50 "I would not recomand using that on your main system". I would not recommend using any of that at all xD
Seriously trying ReactOS sounds fitting for an April 1st video.
How well would React OS work on it?
install Windows Fundamentals for Legacy PCs
It will work perfectly!
FLP is basically just a smaller XP though
He already did, look in his channel.
Have you also tried POSReady 2009?
Thank you for doing this video
You’re welcome!
ReactOS is Probably just A Windows NT experience for Compatibility of Apps and Games. Experimenting is really important.

BSOD: ...*heck* to make sure...
Me: ...ok.
No, the latest Ubuntu (and hence any derivatives thereof) only come in 64-bit versions, and thus is incompatible with the $5 98 PC.
Lamborghini Gamer, only if Ubuntu still shipped disks for free 😂
I have a very similar system (P4 3Ghz, Radeon HD2400, 3GB ram) and I dual boot Debian 10 and Win XP Pro easily. Both Debian with Plasma desktop and Win XP work great. If you can't boot from USB, just go ahead and burn the iso file onto a DVD, and then boot off of that.
Use PLOP as bootmgr, it will allow you to boot from USB to some trickery.
@@thatoneuser5066 lubuntu has 32bit but ubuntu has 32bit. If you search minimal cd you find x86 cd and ubuntu 18.04 32 bit does work
I have tried every flavor of Linux i could find with no luck on this old Systemax Sabre G67 and i keep getting an LFENCE error, so im going to give this a try thank you
Awesome video! !!
I swear, I think ReactOS has gotten worse over the years. I remember it used to work pretty okay for some Windows software, now its so terrible and unstable I can't even get it to run in a VM without issues.
Damn they've been working on ReactOS for the past 22 years? That's a year more than I have lived...
A messed up BCD can cause it to not see an OS. You can many times rename the BCD and rebuild it from a boot disk.
I was actually wondering if something like this was possible (with the compatible binary) and I thought this was really cool.
Give them another 22 years and Im sure it will be fine.
22 years later: Hey guys welcome to another video, this time we're gonna take a look at ReactOS alpha 0.90.643.666.4 and..... it crashed at boot time again, well see you in 40 more years for the next alpha.
My React OS struggles to install on Vmware player
It's a bit too limited at the moment but with a modern N-Vidia and ATI driver and OpenGL/Vulkan support it would be pretty perfect.
btrfs is really good, actually. At least on Linux.
ReactOS is getting more stable.. you should try the nightly builds. they're bit more stable.
You are crazy for installing ReactOS! I only have it virtually, just like my girlfriend. Love the video though.

Hello there, Micheal1 here....
This presentation reminds me why I should have been an electrician or a plumber.
Your CPU for Windows 98 might not support ACPI, so that might be the reason for issues while shutting down, so try changing your CPU to Standard next. Pretty much every new processor supports ACPI but most CPUs at the time of win98 didn't.
at 2:51 when he said FAT31 I died
Have you tried writing the video drivers for the on board graphics to a CD and install the drivers manually to React OS?
Now would be a great time to have a binary compatible version of Windows 7 since Windows 10 is getting weird
If im not mistaken the xp source code was leaked and some people got to make some versions of xp off of that
Drivers for on board devices are sometimes not available in W10.
Michael MJD is slowly turning into Duraga1.
I had a CTRL+ALT+DELETE key issue as well in a VM running React OS
Anyone else notice that this video was made on april first?
Please can you update the 98pc playlist please??
I have the exact same dvd drive in my 98pc and have been suffering the same problem where the discs just stop reading. It just seems that those particular drives just randomly stop reading after a while.
You could try installing Windows Thin PC which is basically a light weight version of Windows 7. It's kind of similar to Windows Fundamentals for Legacy PCs
what about the windows drivers for that video chip?.
Hi MJD, for multiple booting, didn't you consider of using Plop boot manager?
Or would it contaminate your classic/retro setup?
I have used it a few times before to boot from a USB drive. I even did a video on it a few years ago!
@@MichaelMJDah, OK
as far as I know, Plop has abilities to switch partitions and disks to be perceived by OS in particular order. So every boot entry on plop sets booted device as C: drive
did you try version 0.4.12, i got that mostly working on a later pc, hp dx2250
I installed it and using it you need to provide display driver or other manually i dont think it finds any driver online.
Maybe you should have tried a nightly build (or shouldn't have), not sure which you picked.
Nice vid !
IDK if you are doing requests about the $5 Win98 PC. But can you try to install Red Hat 6.2 on it sometime?
Might be worth a try! Thanks for the suggestion
I installed it on my old laptop.. Worked great... Had some issues with the discrete vs integrated gpu but other than that it worked out fine.
So that issue is the same as with xp and such

Windows7, nothing will ever beat it.
Hope you have better luck next time Michael!
I'm thinking ReactOS freezing is equivalent to a BugCheck in Windows.
Hello smokers, Druaga1 here.
This makes me want to buy and install Windows ME instead.
