I’ve read the story back in 1987 while in secondary school. It’s from a book (which I still have), called “Modern Short Stories,” edited by S.H. Burton.

It's not faith that is the problem, it's rather whom or what you choose to put your faith in. Faith has never been an obstacle to action but rather the contrary. People go to doctors and into operation rooms with faith in their hearts. Humans have never lived and can never live without faith

I’m a bit late but thanks for this! My social informatics professor had us read this to take a quiz over it and I definitely wanted a deeper understanding of the story before beginning.

E.M. Forester's " My Wood", is another one of his short stories.(🙂) Read " Fahrenheit 451", by Ray Bradbury. 🌱
Regarding The Fairytale angle, don't forget that in 1909 it was still only a story....which may or may not (most likely) turn out to be true, so the Author had also to watch that one. To make matters worse, in writing this, Forster was going against public opinion since SCIENCE, and especially SCIENCE FICTION was the order of the day, and everyone was excited by it. Forsters book was written NOT as denunciation of Science, but rather as a caution to it....HOWEVER, people being people, many would prob not have made the distinction.
Science fiction as a genre did not exist in 1909, hence the "fable" framing as was common for proto-SF.
