In 1909 it took 12,300 words to say what takes 2 word in 2022.

Read "A logic named Joe". An even shorter short story, but just as accurate.

Well done! Learned of this book a couple of hours ago. Was listening while I worked until I had to stop work and just listen. Fascinating book and excellent narration. Going to listen again with nothing else going on.

What wonderful foresight by Forster! He was describing the lifeless, soulless, inhuman world after the Great Reset being promised as the latest version of the new Utopia.

Way ahead of his time wasn’t he! It’s one of the most underrated dystopian future novels. A sad and sorry world that I for one will be resisting.

Wow. 1822 the beginnings of the invention of computers. 1863 was the first underground train. 1882 electricity was being used for lighting. 1886 introduced the first gasoline powered vehicle. 1889 the first telephones. 1895 the invention of radio. 1903 the first airplane. 1927 television. First desktop computer 1964 followed by first home-use computer in 1977. 1989 the introduction of the World Wide Web. 2012 the first use of Zoom. In 1909 E. M. Forster warned the world that what he saw up to that point AND what he psychically foretold of future inventions was NOT going to end well. Yet, no one has heeded his warnings.

Great comment Catharine! Let us not become to reliant upon the machine, as Forster tells us; ‘The Machine Stops’.

Some of the words I read did not match what was being said, and changed the meaning. But, all in all, an excellent rendering - especially with Zoom and 100% remote work during the Pandemic.

It’s very eery to read these dystopian works of fiction. They are so accurate and leave a lot to contemplate. Maybe best not to rely to heavily on the machine
